Star Renegades was an excellent release in late 2020; we rather enjoyed its gameplay blend of roguelite, RPG and strategy in our review at the time. Developer Massive Damage has continued to work on the game since release, and now it has a major free DLC expansion on the way that'll give the game even more depth.
It's out on PC on 16th December, with consoles to get the update in early 2022 - hopefully not long, then. It'll add a new endgame challenges, additional units, and most importantly a new ending for the story.
- A New Dimension
- Take the fight right to the heart of the tyrannical regime by invading their home turf. It won’t be easy, but you can finally put an end to the multidimensional menace that calls itself The Imperium!
- New Opponents
- New Behemoths arrive on the scene! They’re far more powerful than any opponent you have faced so far – so powerful that you’ll get a sixth hero(!!!) to fight them with! That’s right, it’s PRIME TIME, baby!
- Recruitable Progeny
- Finally, you’ll be able to recruit Progeny / Hero Variants mid-run (presuming you’ve unlocked them, of course!)
- A New Ending
- With the incursion into the Prime Dimension comes the climax of the Star Renegades’ trials. After everything your squad’s have been through, witness the end of the Imperium’s machinations and experience the finale of the story.
- A New Renegade
- The Dark Paragon – Recruit a potent new damage dealer who can steal health from your foes (with the aid of an alien parasite) and change forms in the middle of battle!
As mentioned above, it's hopefully not far away from consoles once the final testing and submissions are complete. Let us know in the comments if you're a fan of the game, and perhaps tempted to revisit when the DLC arrives.

Star Renegades has been on my eShop wish list since release.
I've been really tempted to buy it several times now, holding off just because my games schedule is always too full! At some point my resolve will weaken and I'll bump another game to start playing this one.
This game is BEYOND EXCELLENT. I’ve put over 70 hours in on PS4, and it never gets old. Super excited for this update, it sounds epic!
If you have not tried this game…
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
@teksetter Do it! It’s amazing!
@Teksetter I tried the game whilst it was still on Xbox game pass. I didn’t quite finish it but it was really good (and I almost always dislike rogue likes). Very difficult, especially the first few hours when your learning the ropes but worth a play no doubt.
I think I’ll probably buy the game eventually to go back and finish it (I had one run where I almost got to the end and failed…. It was too traumatic to continue)

Thank you for the recommendations! I truly wish to play this game soon. Not even fear of late-game party wipe will keep me away! 😁
I hate it when that happens, but the good rogue-ish games always get me to come back for another try.
The problem is, I don’t know how we can find time to experience all these righteous games lately! I’ve had Star Renegades and Space Crew on hold forever, was getting back into Darkest Dungeon but then started playing Into the Breach and GALAK-Z, bought but haven’t booted up Slay the Spire, ACNH keeps stealing time from me, and have wish listed Unsighted, Death’s Door, and Spelunky 2 recently.
I can say confidently my backlog has never been worse. 😵💫
@Teksetter I know the feeling. The last few years I’ve tried to keep only 2 games on the go at a time but I’ve slipped these last few months. Got halo, forza, Eastward, tails of iron and pillars of eternity on the go, and I got dragons dogma, dragon quest 11, Pikmin 3 and it takes two ready to go right after.
And the games like the gunk, Legends Arceus, Elden ring, nobody saves the world, silksong (I assume) in the near future. There’s no way I’m getting though all this 😭 good problem to have I suppose
@Teksetter Yep it’s insane, so many games to play. I’m at the point now where I’m buying games on sale, and then they’re sitting on my shelf unopened.
😵💫 about sums it up!
My biggest advice for Renegades is to have a plan for defense. You will get hit, hard, it’s just unavoidable. You have to plan moves ahead and strategize your crew thoughtfully. Honestly, I’ve rarely had so much fun with a turn-based game. It’s actually 100% reignited my love for the genre. SO GOOD
