With Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl launching next week, it's understandable that internet traffic relating to the series is riding high – and a new study has leveraged this level of interest to find out which 'mon people like the most and which ones they positively detest.
Retailer Ebuyer used data from Linkfluence on the 25 most popular Pokémon (plus a few extras) to reveal which 'Pocket Monsters' are generating the most conversations online – as well as those that are experiencing the most 'negative' and 'positive' comments.
Amazingly, Pikachu wasn't the overall winner when it comes to most popular Pokémon. Sure, the series mascot was the most talked-about 'mon, generating a whopping 2.3 million conversations online in the past 12 months (Eevee is second with 636k conversations, while Charizard is third with 567k), but it's actually Charmander who earns the title of 'most loved' Pokémon, with 31.2% of online chatter relating to the 'mon being positive. In second place is Eevee evolution Umbreon, followed by Arcanine in third.
At the other end of the scale, we find poor old Dragonite. 11.9% of conversations relating to this monster over the past 12 months was negative in tone, according to Ebuyer's findings. In second place is Mewtwo, while the third most-hated Pokémon is Snorlax.

I do not like the garbage and the sand castle ones, they are very unimaginative, my favorites are still Pikachu and Evee.
Snorlax is the best boy. He is a big boy. He is a sleepy boy. He is the perfect boy.
maybe it's just because i know jack about data collection but this feels like a very strange way of determining things
Why do people hate Mewtwo?
Flygon and Blaziken need to be higher
@somebread Yeah, “most-hated” seems really vague in this case. Where was it collected from? ‘Hated’ just in terms of coming up against them in a battle, as opposed to their design, personality or characteristics? Mewtwo, Snorlax and Dragonite are all really popular Pokémon, so I place no stock in this at all.
I liked the list posted some time ago that wasn't dominated by Gen I Pokemon somehow.
This looks like misinterpretation of the data here.
Sentiment analysis could be looking at the overall sentiment of the message posted on something like Twitter, rather than really evaluate the sentiment towards the subject matter.
For example, someone might be excited to catch a Mewtwo in a Max Raid battle, but express frustration at failing to catch it.
Infernape is amazing so ignoring this nonsense lol
Of course earlier gens are more talked about, more people know them.
Guess I've gotta get telling people my love for Trubbish, Litwick, Sirfetch'd and Mudkip more. You guys, they are all super cool and amazing!
So lost positive was charmander and most negative was dragonite, how dare they trash the magestic dragonite
I like Dragonite personally. Seems really random to use that information to suggest that he is that hated. It seems like a survey would have been more accurate.
Link fluency uses AI to determine whether a conversation is negative or positive, which could lead to a lot of problems. For instance Snorlax being one of the lowest is probably due to him being associated frequently with words like "fat" and "slow" which are not necessarily used in a derogatory way towards him but are rather fundamental traits of the pokemon.
Since the data is collected regardless of context, I'm guessing a lot of the negativity is coming from Pokemon Unite and its balance discussion. With competitive games that get patched frequently like that, all the discourse becomes about how Gengar and Snorlax are "broken" or Gardevoir is trash tier, etc.
The moral of this story is don't put your characters in a MOBA.
Good. I’ve always hated Snorlax like Eren hates Mikasa.
Cool to see Tyranitar up there. Kinda sucks that his rival isn't there though. Do people not like Aggron?
Seriously! Trubbish and Garbadore are not on the negative comments side!! I am shocked. Those pokemon and their lazy designs are exactly what they are... trash.
@mariopartyfan68 really? I love those. I feel like the more unimaginative ones are the ones that are recolors of existing animals
@Savage_Joe I made the name way before I put this as my profile picture lol. Still a great idea.
The worst Pokemon are the ones who are sentient objects.. or look like robot dinosaurs or whatever
@Ramen756 that is fine, they just do not work for me, one man's trash is another man's treasure.😄 but I am glad you like them.
Dragonite was the most hated!?
cries in disbelief and holds my Dragonite plushie tightly
I've definitely felt some strong hatred towards Snorlax playing pokemon unite. 20 seconds left on the clock, and then a Snorlax with a score shield strolls on to our goal and steals the win tight from under us while I'm just trying my best to stop him.
But also, I fully recognize that Snorlax is indeed best boi, so I can see how this data can be conflicted.
Can we have the link to the full study?
Where's Vanillish, Jynx, Klink, and effing Klefki?... Did they get left off this list and end up on the list of Pokémon that are an utter abomination?
Most of these are absolutely no surprise. Also not a single Pokemon listed from beyond Gen 4.
@anoyonmus probably cause of smash, considered a weak fighter
@anoyonmus My question exactly!
I guess people hate Mewtwo because he was kind of a dick in the first movie. Didn‘t like him either back then ^^
The people who hate Dragonite need a hug from Ash's Dragonite! 😉
I just hate most of the names they choose for these things. So many of them are awkward to say, aren't memorable, or don't make any sense. They're just strange combinations of animal/plant/object names.
Why isn't gengar!... Oh wait he is?... Carry on then.
It's all about Lugia and Meloetta here.
Lilligant close third.
No cinderace
Great choices on here. Wasn't expecting Arcanine though.
@mariopartyfan68 Watch out, sandcastle weighs 550 lbs. It'll crush you if it doesn't eat your soul.
No mention of Emboar? Beat starter and one I had to get a plush to decorate my desk.
I did not need to find out Scolipede is my horoscope Pokemon. One of the few shinies I've caught.
@mariopartyfan68
Those two are very influenced by japanese Believings, that Souls can inhabit lifeless Objects.
Thats why they don't appeal as much to us.
That study can't be accurate, magikarp is the only Pokémon worth mentioning, and it's not even #1 in the list.
Bulbasaur. There's a reason it is #1
@Azuris oh, I did not know that, thanks for the info. Pokemon just keeps surprising me.
@KingMike lol, okay, yeah I know people like them. Every pokemon has fans.
@somebread I know a lot about data collection, and without knowing the exact methodology (which their site does not provide) these data are pure insanity. =P
But, fun enough for a conversation piece as long as you have a proportionately large grain of salt.
I think Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard and Mewtwo being at the top pretty much goes without saying. Though some of my other favorites are a bit lower than I anticipated.
@Kid_Sickarus How dare you disrespect the mad lad Snorlax.
I don't actually care if you hate him btw, I'm just saying this for comedic effect.
I dont think hated is the right word , most people just like pokemon ,the negative part could be due to design or bad movesets ingame?
Also cant believe lugia didn't make the list....
Trying to get Mewtwo to replace Joker as my Smash main. Glad he’s still getting lots of love!
@HotGoomba I hate him so much, with his pointy ears and his sleepy ways! His name sounds like a combination of sleeping pill and laxative!
(I am actually totally fine with Snorlax. How can anyone “hate” a pokemon? )
@Ogbert It's mostly Gen 1/Gen 2 and then the third form of starters, if I'm not mistaken, the only actual starters in their first form I see, are from Gen 1 (correct me if I'm wrong of course).
Glad to see Bulbasaur quite high tho, the underdog of Gen 1 starters.
To the people who talked about Dragonite in a negative sentiment:
Who hurt you?
