If you're a fan of classic Japanese shmups then you might be pleased to learn that Masaya's 1991 Mega Drive title Gynoug (Wings of Wor in the US) is coming to Switch, thanks to publisher Ratalaika Games.
Boasting some truly amazing (and often horrifying) 2D pixel artwork by Satoshi Nakai and a fantastic Noriyuki Iwadare soundtrack, Gynoug is one of the most unique shooters you'll ever encounter – and with the Mega Drive original creeping up in value over the past few decades, this should be a nice, low-cost way of experiencing it.
The game was previously available on the Wii Virtual Console, but only in Japan. Ratalaika recently published another excellent Masaya shooter, Gleylancer, on the Switch eShop.
Here's some PR:
In an era between the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the demons have grown in power by feeding on the evil ambitions of the people. Led by a being known as The Destroyer they plan their attack.
The angel Wor stands up for the survival of the entire tribe, and heads to Iccus to prevent the spread of the evil spirit.
Take control of Wor and shoot down every grotesque enemy in your path. Defeat the demon boss at the end of each area to advance onward.
Features:
* Improved modes available with accessibility features and modern controls
* Glorious and grotesque art and sound
* Epic mid-stage and end-stage bosses
* Multiple power-ups to increase your shot
* Legacy title from the 1990s!
Gynoug launches on the Switch eShop on November 12th, 2021.

It's coming as part of the Expansion Pack, right? Right?
Wow, definitely didn’t expect this. This is a B-tier Genesis shmup, but it’s still pretty good.
I think it’s fair to say that the Switch is the best shmup console of all time at this point. Who could have predicted that?
reminds me of Lords of Thunder.
Absolutely brilliant news I played this back in the day. Highlight of November for me xx got gleylancer and that kicks ass xx got that Schmup collection for 4 pound in the sale well worth it xx a play through of thunder force 3 and 4 later xxxx
Ratalaika Games did a wonderful job with Gleylancer emulation and enhancements. Support these guys!
Gynoug ist Genug. Yk, just in case any german natives here appreciate the pun
Love this game. Used to stare at the box in John Lewis when I was a kid, so intrigued by what the game must be like. Eventually got it years later in the glory days when no one cared about anything 'retro' and older games/consoles were dirt cheap. Man, I wish I could go back to that time and buy everything.
Cool, looks a bit like Lords of Thunder.
I only really got into shoot em ups in the last few years, but what a time it is to be a fan of the genre.
yes!
yyyYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!
Nice that this is not an NSO title.
Glad I could pay for the NSO to provide free marketing and data to the rights holders of Genesis games to try and sell me games
Superb,I loved this on the Megadrive. A day one for sure. This dev done a really great job with the Gley Lancer port and priced it very fairly too.
@RushDawg Xbox 360 have more shmups than Nintendo Switch. And probably, PS4 have more shmups than Nintendo Switch.
I remember how psyched I was when I rented and beat this way back when. The dark setting and cool bosses make this one really unique.
I love shmups and you can bet your trousers that most of my library is populated by them...but this one didn’t make the cut for me. Soundtrack is great, but the game itself is rather dull when you compare it to other games in the genre. As someone above said, it’s B-tier at best. Some may like it, but there are better ways to waste ones time
Hopefully it will get the same treatment as Gleylancer, which was one of the best shmup ports I have played on Switch.
Have an original Wings of Wor cartridge, so I'm good.
Wings of Wor on Switch is a rad move. Another gem from the shoot’emup powerhouse Genesis. If we get the Battle Mania games that would really put it over the top
I couldn't get into this one. The problem for me were the background effects. The background wobble in the game messes with my head too much that reduces my ability to concentrate on the action. It's not the only shooter that distracts me with such effects, but there are enough that don't do that for me to stick with those. This does look cool though and good to see it available for those interested.
@StefanN wohl gesagt/nicely put
Not played this in years. Another ok Megadrive shmup that I'm looking forward to seeing how it's aged.
This Ratalaika people is really committed to bringing back some 16 bit classics, and at an amazing price at that. Been enjoying Gleylancer a lot. Don't think I'm getting this one, though, because I own it on Mega Drive, but I salute the release.
Really like this, needs to be put straight on hard though. And the soundtrack.... Opening theme still gives me chills.
@SpringDivorce love the Noriyuki Iwadare soundtrack.
Was not expecting this...but its a pleasant surprise...especially seeing as how they handled Gley Lancer
@RushDawg get out of it with your B tier nonsense.
These new MD releases are pretty awesome.
I actually haven’t heard of this one. Guess I’ll try it out when it drops. More Genesis games that aren’t on the Mini or any other Genesis collection is a good thing.
Will this be censored in the U.K.? When Mean Machines reviewed the Japanese version ‘Wings of Wor’ some of the bosses looked like giant todgers.
I played Gynoug but it was incredibly hard and I never got very far into it. I’m sure I read an interview where the programmers included those bosses as they though nobody would get that far.
Did somebody say Gleylancer?
@Vyacheslav333 not even close, I own a JPN X360 with an almost (99%) full shmup lineup digital and physical, the NSW currently has more than DOUBLE the number of releases and even quality-wise it is at a minum comparable, probably better. If Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets, Futari, Raiden Fighter Aces and Bullet Soul IB come (Guwange, Radiant Silvergun and DDP SDJJ might be tricky) I’d say I might decide to sell my collection for a lot of moolah and not regret it one bit.
NSW has way more shmups than PS4 too, the latter “just” holds onto Dangun Feveron, Battle Garegga and Ketsui’s exclusivity which I wouldn’t be surprised to see coming sometime in the future (even tho Battle Garegga might have to wait for NSW 2). There’s a TON of all time greats missing on PS4 that are on NSW, although obviously without the ShotTriggers treatment.
Now, this makes me hope we'll also get Cho Aniki!
I owned this back in the day and man was I rubbish at it. Will pick this up for pure nostalgia when the price is right… assume I’ll be even worse at it in my 40’s than my teens 😑
I still have my Mega Drive cart, played it fairly recently. It was actually a budget priced game back in the day, well compared to some Mega Drive games anyway. Its a fun and visually interesting shooter, but not something I'd buy on Switch to be honest.
@DashKappei Oh, okay.
@EmirParkreiner Someone also remember this game?! Wow, it's surprising.
@Shadow_Dancer the Japanese version was called Gynoug, not Wings of Wor. It was part of the ChoAniki (Super Big Brother) series of games. The Japanese have a fascination with muscular homo erotic kitsch imagery and these games epitomised this.
Don't hold me to this but they are classed as, 'baka-ge' which translates to something like idiot game.
Brilliant game, have the original boxed copy for megadrive.
A very cool and stylistic game, with definitely a giant penis as one of the bosses.
They did a pretty good job with Gleylancer so I'll probably give this one a chance too.
Love it. My Mega Drive cart is buried in storage somewhere so this will be sweet.
@flatspikes I managed to finished it back when it first came out. Now I'm 46 and itching to see if I can do it again Holy ***** that's a big number.
Good news! Great shooter!! Still have the original Genesis game in mint condition too!
Btw is it me or is Greylancer hard as hell!! Or….maybe I don’t have the reflexes I used to lol
@RushDawg Missing touhou tho- xP
One of my favorite titles besides the Thunderforce series during my Genesis day.
@RushDawg if that game was B tier and it was Highly praised by this site, then what's the meat and potatoes?
besides Cuphead ofc
Why does it look like a 70s rock album cover?
the castlevania II of shmups. pretty meh but unique
@Vyacheslav333
no and no
I've got Gleylancer on Switch, can't wait to get this one.
