Reggie Fils-Aimé has done all sorts of things since he retired from his role as Nintendo of America's president in 2019, and his latest temporary gig is well worth watching if you love learning about the history of the video game industry.
The man who made a name for himself during Nintendo's DS and Wii generation has been given the job of moderating - or should we say hosting - a special 20th anniversary Xbox panel focused on the past, present and future. The panel itself includes stories from Reggie's industry friends and competitors Robbie Bach, Peter Moore, Bonnie Ross, and Ed Fries.
"As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Xbox, we look back at how a passionate group of Microsoft renegades used their creativity and innovation to push traditional boundaries of gaming and establish Xbox as a dominant player in the industry. These industry trailblazers share their personal stories and experiences — reminiscing on the past and looking forward to what the future holds. The discussion is moderated by former Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé and features Xbox visionaries Robbie Bach, Ed Fries, Peter Moore, and Bonnie Ross."
Reggie even shared some of his own history with the brand and praised the Xbox team for its efforts over the past 20 years - noting how the industry is "better" because of Xbox's launch. Here are his full words, courtesy of our sister site Pure Xbox:
"When Xbox launched, I wasn't in the industry, I was a consumer - I was that prototypical consumer that had a PS2 in my house already, I had an N64, I was thinking about a GameCube but I actually didn't buy a GameCube until I was already part of Nintendo... but my son, an avid gamer, was the one saying we need to check out this Xbox thing... and the driver was Halo, and that experience is what got the original Xbox into my house with that big old controller. That is my Xbox memory from the very beginning."
"The moment in time of the launch, the moment in time now, 20 years later, the industry is better because of the Xbox launch, I passionately believe that. And the fact that there are all of these companies making all of this wonderful content, the ecosystem is so robust, Xbox is a big part of that."

Why would it be weird? Reggie isn't with Nintendo right now. It's not as rare as Sakurai telling you to go play Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox One during a Nintendo broadcast.
That's just cool.
@HammerGalladeBro Where does the word “weird” come into things? The article just says that the talk is “well worth watching if you love learning about the history of the video game industry.“
Which seems fair enough, really. It’s quite an interesting discussion.
@Maxz the tagline says: "I don't know why I'm here either"
@OptometristLime But that’s a direct quote from Reggie. It’s one of the first things he says (in jest). It’s not like anyone is putting words into his mouth or mischaracterising the situation.
It’s certainly notable that Reggie is chairing an Xbox centred discussion, but the only person who has explicitly implied it might be strange is Reggie himself (again, largely in jest).
At least it caught me off guard some what. Ironic would perhaps help to convey the situation present in this article.
Et tu, Brute?
At least, strange. I would expect him to stay away from Microsoft and Sony.
@HammerGalladeBro
Heh, not as RARE as Sakurai telling us to go play Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox One. I see what you did there.
@OptometristLime Yeah, I’ll admit I certainly wasn’t expecting Reggie to appear as the host of an Xbox talk.
But it seems like the first post was faulting the article for implying that Reggie’s inclusion was somehow bizarre, when the tone is actually pretty hands-off (“hey, this is neat, give it a watch if you’re interested”).
I could be completely misreading things though. It wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened.
X-box: we're looking for a host that would bring in a lot of publicity, and we thought a former-nintendo Icon would do the job rather nicely. That is, if you would be willing. We would compensate you generously of course if you participated.
Regi: you had me at publicity.
I’m not an Xbox fan, but I LOVE this. Reggie has always been a fun and interesting person in the industry so no wonder they asked him to do this.
Reggie: I’m about kicking Xbox ass, I’m about taking Xbox exec names… oh wait I’m in Microsoft’s territory I should tone it down

I find Reggie going "I don't know why I'm here either" to be extremely funny.
Maybe they are hoping some Nintendo dust rubs off on them.
Reggie's gearing up to become the entire industry's laid back uncle. ^^
I like it.
politics should take note. If theres one way for companies to bridge the gaps between fanwars, this is definitely a way to go. just pay respect for your competition.
Reggie putting his name out there for the forthcoming CEO job at Activision I see.
Must be some kind of humiliation ritual
Bodies and readyness and such.
@HammerGalladeBro only fan boys of one console think it's weird
Real gamers that ain't fanboys think ok cool
Money is money, folks.
Change the tagline back, you cowards
Ohmygod! Was his body even ready?!?!
Jk😉😉
@valcoholic I could say a lot about that, but I'll keep my mouth shut (I'll just say, opinions on video game consoles are entirely different from politics. The former is a mere opinion, the latter is not). In relation to gaming companies, I feel like there's a lot less (public, at least) animosity between them. Things seem a lot more respectful nowadays.
Can't really do anything about the console wars within the fanbases. The console wars arguments pretty much amount to "I know you are, but what am I". Thus, seeing as the fanbases can not mature past the sixth grade, I don't know what can be done. lol
@Harmonie Maybe I'm sorta old now and not that deeply entangled into those communities, but for my perception, the fanbases really became way calmer than they were, say in the 00 years. Not just videogames, I remember feeling like it could only be a matter of time, until android and apple fanboys start to actually murder each other. And With games it feels like its way more OK to just play the stuff you're into without following some company religion or whatever.
Of course there still are flamewars going on, but i guess the average overall audience is older today.
I was GC and Xbox that gen. I got them about 5 months apart. GC didn't have a whole lot I wanted to play sadly.
traitor traitor traitor traitor traitor traitor traitor traitor traitor
I think this is a great reminder of what a genuinely good person Reggie is, because even his old business rivals still have such tremendous respect for him and invite him to do things like this!
I wonder why Reggie retired from Nintendo?... I JUST REMEMBERED WHY!
Guessing he didn't care about dealing with me again after the Nintendo NX Incident.🤣
I admit i bought xbox first too. I only bought Gamecube Resident Evil 4 bundle...
