Veteran composer Shoji Meguro has recently left Atlus and gone freelance, the company has conformed (thanks, Nintendo Everything).
The announcement on Atlus' official website confirms that he actually left at the end of September following over 25 years at the company. Also confirmed in the post was the fact that he will continue to work on Atlus projects on a freelance basis in the future — which will come as good news to fans of his work.
Meguro's career has seen him compose music most notably for the Persona series, but also Shin Megami Tensei, the original RPG franchise from which Persona was spun off (and one which incidentally has a new entry arriving very soon). He also worked on Atlus' Trauma Center series back in the mid-2000s on Nintendo DS and Wii. Persona 5 was his last big project — one that we're still waiting to see on Switch, unfortunately — although you can enjoy Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne on Switch in remastered form.
Fans of his work will be happy to hear he's not retiring, though. In fact, as the composer detailed in a tweet discussing his future, in addition to freelance composing he'll now be focusing on his real passion: developing indie games. Here's the statement he put out via Twitter yesterday (27th October):
Feel free to let us know your favourite Meguro-san tunes below.

Next thing we’ll know is that he’ll be employed by NetEase
I wish him the best at least. And hopefully this doesn't affect the quality of future SMT games
@Gavin, I believe you have a typo in your first sentence. Should be "Confirmed" instead of "conformed"
Sad to see a legend go, music is a big deal in the Persona games but at least it seems like he will work on the future games too.
@iLikeUrAttitude I believe Strange Journey was the last SMT game he composed for.
Back in 2009.
So, no, this won't affect SMT's quality at all.
I have to assume this wasn't an easy decision to make. Meguro's music in the Persona and SMT series is pretty well known across the world, at least in the JRPG community.
Really cool how he gained skills making games over the past 5 years before making this decision. To be such an accomplished musician and then decide to follow your bigger passion, even if it means leaving a comfortable industry, well that's pretty special.
I wish him great fortune and look forward to his games in the future. At least we know the game music will be top notch!
puts on analysis hat...
Microsoft are buying SEGA / Atlu-NO! That was my internet rumour hat. Dammit!!!
@GrailUK please forgive my odd question here.
How did you make your text bold?
@Ralizah Not according to Wikipedia at least. He also worked on P5/Royal and several spin-off's / remakes.
Now, he rarely worked alone and i can't say how much influence he has on the overall direction, but there is a good chance that things may change from hereon out.
@Astral-Grain put an '*' either side of your text. (And not odd at all if you didn't know how to do it!)
@GrailUK I appreciate you!
From what I understand, Meguro-san will continue to work on Atlus games (likely on the upcoming Persona game and I think he is doing Re Fantasy as well). Hopefully this just means he won't be employed by the company directly and work as a project-based talent instead like Lyn and Lotus Juice. This might mean he won't be the lead composer in the upcoming games though but I think his contribution will still be substantial. He is the best composer in gaming today at least in my books. His sound is very distinct and catchy but can span different genres.
@Einherjar Persona isn't SMT.
Spinoffs aren't SMT.
There's no reason to think a composer who, apart from a remaster of an older game, hasn't worked on the series since 2009 will negatively impact future SMT games by leaving the company.
Future Persona games would absolutely be negatively affected by him leaving if he was done with the series, but it seems like he'll probably work on future games in a freelance capacity.
So, really, this changes almost nothing.
Hopefully by indie games he doesn't mean mobile games cause that's usually how all of Sega's retirees became after they left the company.
@Specter_of-the_OLED he doesn't. You can see the game he's making on his twitter.
@Einherjar Talking about the quality of SMT games in particular, not Persona or tangentially related spinoffs.
In any case he will be working with Atlus as a freelancer so I think persona will be fine for now.
