Nintendo fans in Japan will soon be able to pick up new physical versions of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 that include their respective DLC, it's been announced.
Nintendo shared the news yesterday during all the Direct commotion (the Japanese broadcasts of Directs often contain the odd difference to the western versions) and have summarised the announcement on social media. Both of the new releases will launch on 8th October.
No such products have been announced for the west just yet, meaning you'll have to pick up Breath of the Wild's Expansion Pass and Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion separately if you want to enjoy the additional content. Of course, we'll make sure to keep an eye out for any developments on a western release should such a thing exist in the future.
Would you buy these physical editions if they made it over to the west? Do you already own the base games and/or the expansions anyway? Let us know in the usual place.

Whats the price difference?
The box art looks a bit ugly, but in principal, this should be a good thing for physical owners to have complete versions.
Ah I was always hoping Nintendo would start releasing "complete" editions of some of their titles with expansions. More incentive to finally get Splatoon 2 now. Can always import. 🙂
Ooh, that's interesting. Might pave the way for future games too, like perhaps with Xenoblade 2 and its Torna expansion. And maybe Smash when its all wrapped up too. Always good to have these for preservation purposes.
This is important, is the DLC baked into the cartridge or is it just a download code?
The boxart leaves something to be desired but I'm hoping we see something like this for Smash Ultimate internationally.
@RupeeClock that’s what I want to know if dlc is just a code or all in on cart
@S20TEW
Hopefully it's like the Sword and Shield expansion pass releases, where everything is on the cartridge.
However, it's also a much more expensive package because it's the base game and the pass, with no bundle discount.
Nintendo hates the west confirmed
This is a great idea to squeeze in the remaining audience
I'm surprised it's taken so long but that boxart is ugly as. I've seen it reported online that it's just a code for the DLC which is a pity.
@Rob3008 Yeah, the cover seems to imply they are giving a download code for DLC. That's disappointing.
If they put DLC on the gamecard, I'll buy. Pass otherwise. (I bought digital in 2018.)
geez they butchered the box arts so much 😁😁
@BlackenedHalo With all incredible art Nintendo/Splatoon keeps putting out, it's amazing they couldn't do better than that box cover.
Such a waste of beautiful box art though.
Hate the look of the box art. It was the same with the Pokémon 8th gen games.
I hope they do this for Wii U BotW too. Not that anyone would get it for anything other than pure novelty. But who needs anything other than novelty
I would expect that the Cart is exactly the same, you just get a free code
If it is a cart and a code, this is just pointless from a players point of view.
But Nintendo seems to be going down the money grabbing route now so not suprising
If it's like the physical versions of Snipperclips Plus, Tetris 99 and Pokémon Sword/Shield + Expansion Pass, the DLC will be on the cartridge. That's the main reason I decided to get the former despite being a free downloadable game, semantics aside. I also want to get Pokémon Sword that way, but it seems NoA didn't ship that to Mexico. Either that or I completely missed it.
But yeah, if they release the BOTW with the DLC on the cartridge over here, I'll happily get that instead of the Wii U version.
Oh this is the motivation I need to pick up Splatoon2 at last. When do you intend to sell this to me, Nintendo?
Google Translate:
The packaged software "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild + Expansion Pass" and "Splatoon 2 + Octo Expansion", which are a set of software and additional content, will be released on October 8th (Friday).
Would you buy these physical editions if they made it over to the west?
Stupid enough...probably yes
Now they can robb me of my BOTW and Splat2 funds....so looks like will have expansion onboard... The + would seems to me indicate it's part of the cart itself not a DLC download code.
Wow I might actually finally bother with the breath of the wild dlc if this comes to the west!
It’s time, Nintendo.
I have not got the dlc for zelda so if it came over here I would consider it
As for splatoon 2 did not get the second one so don't know
But would be very good for every one else that wasn't cartridge
Will we get a Wii U release with all DLC?
That's acutally really cool nintendo!
@RupeeClock funnily enough I want it to be a code because I wanted it all in one ages ago . A case of sour grapes is all lol but truthfully I want it all on cart
The Splatoon 2 DLC is most original shooter campaign I've played since Kid Icarus Uprising. Glad to see more people might get their hands on it.
Just give us Nintendo Selects.
If it's a physical release with everything on the cart, then these need to come to the west. Stuff like this is super important to preservation
Animal Crossing will need one of these at the end of it's updates...
@Silly_G It's happening!
@EVIL-C just a heads up that the Japanese version of Splatoon 2 (at least the one I bought) only had Japanese language support, but if that doesn’t deter you then go ahead, my friend.
@Clyde_Radcliffe : Nintendo already updates cartridges with the latest version in subsequent prints.
The only possible exception may be Smash though, as the base software plus updates to date would require a 32GB cartridge, and I can’t see them wasting such a cartridge unless they eventually release a complete edition with the DLC included.
@Aurumonado : Awesome news, but I did cave and buy the BotW DLC when it was on sale some time ago. I despise the practise so much that I’ve pretty much sworn off DLC except in very rare cases (and even then, I strongly resent it).
Nevertheless, I am still keen on getting this (which will support English), though I’m tempted to hold out for a local release for English packaging.
Splatoon 2 is unfortunately Japanese only, so we’ll have to hold out for a Western release either way.
@S20TEW if it’s code I’ll pass if it’s on cart I’ll definitely pick it up to have it all physically. Also the thing to look for is if it needs to download any of it or if it’ll be all downloaded off the cart
I bought the dlc while on sale but haven’t to admit I’d buy it physical if I could
@SapphireBlaze only had Japanese language support
This is the part I hate the most not knowing if JPN only or EN options on the JPN released games. Cause trying to ship back is pretty much worthless to do that.
Was hoping this would come to the USA/europe, but its been a while and we haven't really gotten any news of it. Same because i hate dlc, and i like to have a full thing on the cartrige without any downloads. ACNL did that. Hope they do it with new horizons too at least
So in the end, do we know if the DLC is included in the cartridge or if it needs to be downloaded? I'm hoping to see an updating on this about everyday XD
