Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Adds Ren & Stimpy To Roster

Outside of the leaks, there's only like two characters we know nothing about, which kinda sucks. Potentially just one if Ren and Stimpy are separate fighters. Hopefully this game will be supported with post-launch DLC to fill out the roster. There are so many great Nick franchises that deserve representation: Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron, My Life as a Teenage Robot... even some niche shows like El Tigre, The Mighty B, and Catscratch would be great to see.

Edit: I've never been a fan of how Nintendo Life updates existing articles like this instead of just making an entirely new one. Now comments like this one are irrelevant and you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to try and find what people are now saying.

Something weird I just realized is that this game doesn't seem to have an equivalent to Final Smash moves. I know they're selling this as a competitive fighting game, but if there's no way for Aang to go full Avatar State, I'll be a little disappointed. Still very excited though, I don't want to come across as too negative in the comments. Budget seems well spent into making a polished game, but I wish Nick would give them enough to have more content.

@Not_Soos They probably don't want to do so, bc even with all the special Features they have, people are still calling it a cheap smash clone, So adding a final smash like feature sure wont help.

I've enjoyed watching the Smash pros go gaga over this game but it's going to need a lot more fan service than 16 fighters to get me excited.

@Not_Soos I think the supers in this game are the equivalent to finals. Unlike Smash, i think it's just going by Melee standards, but with a special finisher rather than a final smash. Again we gotta see more or at least play the game when it comes out.

-FOP is co-owned and co-created by Frederator, who currently work with Cartoon Network
-FOP's earlier seasons (the good ones) were distributed outside of the US by Nelvana, not Nick.
-FOP's creator, Butch Hartman, is a known ego-maniac and it's often rumoured he requires royalties for his characters to be used. This is backed up by how his name is usually the one of two to show up on copyright disclaimers on crossovers alongside Stephen Hillenburg (which is likely because he made Nick's biggest show and thus the one that usually gets top billing on promo material/shifts the most copies)

Danny, who is notably in the game but also a Hartman creation, was made in-house at, and distributed by, Nick so they'd likely just need to pay Hartman (assuming the rumours are true) and go.

@Noid Ok i can see why that would be a problem. Probably explains why he was absent from Globs of doom too but the show was still in production at that time. Even with that dilemma, Jimmy at least had no reason to not be included, unless the production company now being defunct is an issue as to why it's not included.

I hope they'll continue to add new fighters as the game goes on, free obviously preferable but I wouldn't be mad about paid.

From the fact they're using Nigel Thornberry to tease the image and there's only one rep from that show, I'm guessing Darwin or Eliza Thornberry.

@Ogbert If Eliza's in the game then Darwin will probably show up as part of her moveset. Given her abilities in the show, it'd make sense for her to summon animals to fight for her in the game, ala Pokemon Trainer in Smash. Plus the game could use more girl characters.

@readalie It could definitely do with a better gender split yeah! It's a shame, and a bit telling, that most of the wanted characters (including my own) are all male due to the source material being so predominantly male.

@Ogbert Yeah... Admittedly my own choices run male too, but we still haven't even gotten Ginger or Eliza, the only two 90s female protagonists. (Yes I want Ginger, I'm aware I'm probably the only one lol).

...on the other hand, if they ever decide to include live action, I'd love Kenan and Clarissa to make appearances.

It bothers me so much that in this age of cancel culture, no one is cancelling these Nickelodeon games with Ren and Stimpy. Look, I get it, it was a great show way back when. But we now know the creator was a paedo, he literally admitted he had a relationship with a 16 year old fan. Is this appropriate for our kids to be playing? Who exactly are these games aimed at? It's literally just greed. Putting in characters just because they can... it honestly makes me sick that no one is talking about this and everyone is just like "cool, Ren and Stimpy, I used to love that show". Like... Nickelodeon are trying to keep it a secret, so they can just make more money. It's gross

And then went on to make that adult version... how is that... how are 90s characters even appropriate for a kids game? If we just let this slide then his victims will never receive justice. He's not going to get any money anyways so it doesn't matter that I once bought a R&S SNES game off the ebay and THAT was one of the games someone decided to be a deadbeat seller on to me.
And that game was Veediots, the one of the four SNES games that doesn't even have collectible value to it. Imagine ripping someone off over that.

I would agree though with separating the art from the artist. R&S wasn't even something people spoke much off beyond its original early '90s hype.
I was pretty much behind the R&S bandwagon, so I didn't follow what happened. I guess only saw the original run after John K was fired (which I only read happened in a magazine review of another Nick game back in the day. Rocko's Modern Life for the SNES?). I think I had only seen that from 1994 on to I think 1996 when they canceled it, when I recall noticing that for several years Nick had stopped running the prior episodes. By then the hype was gone.

there's definitely many degrees of seperation between the nostalgia around ren and stimpy and his crazy antics (especially since he left/was fired from the nick series after a point IIRC?)

Remember that John K. does not own Ren & Stimpy, a reboot for Comedy Central is in production, and it was already stated officially that he is not coming back to work on the show, and he is not getting any money, buying this game won't give any money to him, he is retired, never working in a cartoon again, and even before he was exposed as a sexual predator in 2018, he was fired from his own creation and struggled to find another job for other reasons.

This is how it goes with most cartoons, comics, movies, games and other media, companies earn millions and billions with popular franchises and characters, but the creator only earns his salary, but John K. proves that sometimes this can be a good thing.

Well, it's not like we'd be better off with Squidward Tentacles, or even Farkas "Bulk" Bulkmeier and Eugene "Skull" Skullovich! I might even settle for a guest appearance from Movie Sonic the Hedgehog! By extension, Nick is owned by Viacom, and Paramount has the rights to a series of Sonic the Hedgehog Movies. Movie Sonic would be perfect, since Smash has Game Sonic!

@victordamazio true but Nickelodeon hold some responsibility for allowing this to happen under their roof and continuing to make money from it. They provided a safe space where he could carry out his perverse predatory actions... they introduced him to his victims!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I had somehow never heard about the goings-on with John K, but after reading about it (and watching a short documentary), I completely agree with not including these characters. In fact, I'd say they should be retired entirely. They're just too closely associated with him.

@Snatcher just not include them in the first place! This is a brand new game. And no, I entirely expected the greed. I just want them to be held accountable. Only we can say it's not okay.

And nick is not going to say a word, as people aren't making a big deal out of it (Which tbh they really should have made a bigger deal about back then) But I still don't think its fair to get rid of characters people love. I think people can like them without supporting the creator, and Plus, how are you not going to include them, there is a reboot in the works, So even if lets say, didn't add them into the game, they are going to be brought back into the light sooner or later.

@Snatcher Is it the same company who made the kart racing game? Because they were in that too... trust me, Nickelodeon had a say. There would have been a back and forth to make sure Ren and Stimpy looked to their specifications.

@Scapetti He was quickly fired from Nickelodeon in Season 2, not for sexual harassment, but because he never delivered the episodes on time and went overbudget, and also because of his short temper and constantly fighting with his bosses, he also mistreated and overworked the employees of his own studio.

Viacom hired him again for an adult version of Ren & Stimpy, but only 6 episodes were completed, you could say he was fired 2 times.

@Snatcher you say people should have made a bigger deal about it back when and you're right, and they didn't because Nickelodeon kept it a secret and it only recently came out, like in the last couple of years... when the victims grew up and spoke about it themselves, so... it's actually kind of fresh. So yeah we can be mad at Nickelodeon. Who are the ones still making money from it... and who are the ones who allowed it to take place. I don't know why more people aren't angry about it.

@Scapetti John K. only worked with Nickelodeon for a short time, the show lasted 5 Seasons, but he was fired in Season 2, it's possible that most or all of his sex crimes happened when he wasn't working for Nickelodeon, although this might have happened when he was working on the adult version of Ren & Stimpy for Spike TV, both channels are owned by Viacom.

A much worse scandal for Nickelodeon is Dirty Dan Schneider, who worked for Nickelodeon for decades on so many live-action series, until he was exposed as a much worse sex offender, with even a foot fetish, they never proved anything, but there's a lot of evidence, they never stated the reason why Nickelodeon stopped working with him, but we know.

@Darkyoshi98 I think no, like I said, he doesn't own his creation and is not getting any money for the upcoming reboot, maybe he got money from Seasons 3-4-5 because he still got credit for episodes he didn't finish and others completed, but overall, buying this game, DVDs or the upcoming reboot will not give any money to him.

Also, he couldn't even finish Season 2.

Another sad thing is that John K. is another case of talented artist, terrible person, he is a very skilled animator, he made good contributions to the animation industry, like it or not, Ren & Stimpy was revolutionary, but he ruined his own career, even before he was exposed as a sex offender, he couldn't find another job.

It's like that brazilian goalkeeper who won the national tournament, then next year, killed his ex-girlfriend and fed her body to dogs.

Smash has its fan base but the genre is still pretty niche. It's a brave Dev that goes up against a Nintendo franchise, especially when they've tried once before with little fanfare. I'll keep a beady eye on this one though all the same.

@Scapetti He's been pretty thoroughly cancelled at this point and so cut off from his own properties that he's not going to see a cent from this. Of course someone as scummy as him could always be more cancelled IMO.

I was a huge ren and stimpy fan back in the day and to this day still have all the old comics and watch the seasons from time to time. But yeah it’s unfortunate it’s creator is someone I’d not like to glorify. I’m surprised this game included them after all that controversy but I do have fond memories of these two from my childhood.

@KingMike I had veediots and time warp on my snes back in the day. If I hadn’t have been such a huge fan of theirs I’d probably have called these games steeeupid feeelthy fat bloated sacks of protoplasm!

You are complaining about John K not being held accountable and you are dismissing the odious actions of Whedon as "being a bit of a jerk". Yes they are two different levels of awful but the things Whedon did were appalling and had long lasting effects.

As for Ren & Stimpy, I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment you share, but sadly there are a few other Nickelodeon characters that fall into the same bracket too. I would, as others are saying, try to separate the art from the artist. The original creators are no longer involved, their creations have been taken away from them, whether they received the correct punishment for their crimes is a separate discussion for a different website.

Was people here bitching here too when Powder Toast man was revealed? This world would have a lot less works to enjoy if everyone went nuclear when someone involved with said work had a negative history. I will still enjoy rurouni kenshin even if the author had negative history and glad Jump still reuses the character every once in awhile for games
