Update [Tue 28th Sep, 2021 02:30 BST]: Limited Run has shared a look at the double pack collector's edition. Both games will be on a single cartridge. Four-week pre-orders for this version and the standard edition begin on 1st October.
Original article [Thu 12th Aug, 2021 01:30 BST]: After multiple delays, Tom Happ's Axiom Verge 2 has finally been released on the Nintendo Switch. As part of this, Limited Run Games has revealed the physical versions.
This includes a bundle of the original Axiom Verge and second game, and also a standalone version of Axiom Verge 2 - both open for pre-order on 1st October. It's also been clarified how both releases will be under the same LRG collector number. More details will be revealed soon.
In our review of Axiom Verge 2, we said Happ had "done it again" - producing a pitch-perfect, excellently paced Metroidvania adventure, that's absolutely worth your time.
Will you be holding out for the physical release, or have you already purchased a digital copy of Axiom Verge 2? Tell us below.

and limited run dang. I thought it was going to get a retail big release
Nice!
This must be a first for LRG, because they would typically issue both games on separate cartridges (with ludicrously oversized and overpriced collector's editions for each game).
Here's hoping that this is a sign of things to come.
Some really ugly cover art
LRG means an instant pass. Not gonna pay over double the price for an intentionally low print run to create scarcity.
@getyourak Agreed. Hard pass!
pre-order now and receive your copy in 7 to 284 months!
jokes aside, I get that there's global shipping regulations because of the panorama. but that's something LRG should account for before opening preorders, so customers don't wait over half a year (or over a year in some cases) for their purchase.
@EnigK
@BenAV
Well, right on cue - seems the physical Axiom 2 will be here relatively quickly. I better stop buying big epic games and focus on shorter experiences 😅
It’s nice they give people the option to buy the bundle or standalone.
Edit: actually if preorders don’t start until Oct 1, the game probably won’t ship till at least Q1 2022...
@DarthNocturnal
Limited Run Games still can't shake this image of "games selling out within minutes", even though a large number of their games now use an open pre-order system.
Most LRG sales, with a few exceptions, now give you a generous month long window to place your order, and it gets fulfilled sometime in the future as this process is placing an order for an item to be manufactured.
You also might be interested to hear about how the profits from the Multiverse edition published by Badland Publishing never went to the developer, and that LRG had to step in and sell the Wii U physical release of the game at a loss, so that the money could actually go to Thomas Happ.
Limited Run take ages to get their games out. They have ruined two birthday gifts for me after ordering 8 months out.
@Fiyaball it's only as high/low as the number of people who order.
@Fiyaball
An open preorder without limits is by definition, not artificially limited. Anyone who wants one can get one.
Yes, many of their games are limited to X copies at the beginning, this is not one of them.
I picked this up digitally (quite enjoyable so far) and am looking forward to the double pack since I missed out on the 1st copy.
@DarthNocturnal same here, discovered what happened after buying the game.
But I would have preferred a standard release, LRG always asks a premium not to mention how long it takes to get your games, and I am not even starting about those special cases taking over a year.
Dammit Limited Run Games just can't leave these alone do they? Hated that they made me missed the TakeOver physical release. Their pre-order period is just too short. Hopefully the game makes it to Best Buy soon which may likely take forever.
It’s as if someone yelled “We need cover art!” five minutes before going into print.
I f-ing loathe limited releases. Make it available to the mass market!
Strange, the first one was released in retails stores…
Je l’avais trouvé chez Leclerc…
Cover art artist was impressed by fifa21 switch, so…
@moodycat i’m also waiting for Fata Morgana which in turn has held up No more Heroes 1 & 2. But I knew what it would be like going in so i’m not too bothered. May go for this double pack as never played either game!
@Teksetter About 6 months to finish the first one then. Seems doable.
It's a no for me! Which is a shame as I do prefer physical media. I have only bought into this type of thing once, with Turrican from Strictly Limited Games-pre ordered a year ago, but without even an update since mid May this year... never again!! And of course, like Axiim Verge it has already been released digitally so it's not like I'm waiting to play the game.
@Specter_of-the_OLED You have a month open pre-order window where you can secure a copy at any point in that time. How much more time do you need?
@jrt87 whilst I agree regarding anyone purchasing these as an investment, some people just like to have a game physically. It’s rare to see someone purchasing these to keep as opposed to profit off of though, I admit. Same with a lot of things these days unfortunately ☹️
@PessitheMystic while a month is generous, Iot is like usual "you must get it now because there is no later"
@PessitheMystic Unlike a normal release where you can buy it a year later and it's still readily available, and often for less. Stop defending this limited print BS. It's ruining the physical media market.
@EVIL-C referring to your other comment, it IS available to the mass market, you just have a limited time to buy it. I'm sure that's plenty of opportunity to decide if you want the friggin game or not.
And I'm not defending them by any means. But I will say this, the physical media market has been steadily declining anyway. Companies like LRG might monopolise everything, sure, but more often than not there wouldn't be a physical market for most of the games they release. Consider that.
@PessitheMystic Are you aware of the sheer amount of physical copies that litter the stores in Japan, compared to other markers where its often so hard to find a physical copy? Shantae 5 was monopolized in NA, yet in SE Asia, it's still readily available.
I can't always spring for a new game whenever LRG tells me I have to, as I have many other adult financial responsibilities. It'll never go on sale. It'll never be in stock 6 months from now, when it's perhaps more convenient.
The last straw came for me when Large AAA publishers like Ubisoft and Konami are now using LRG, when they should be releasing them directly to stores. Multibillion-dollar companies using a boutique indie publisher is gross.
Then I see games like Hades, Untitled Goose game, Horizon Chase Turbo, to name a small few get standard releases, which only brings up the question yet again why can't X or Y have the same treatment, despite a smaller physical market.
What may have started as a noble endeavor quickly got perverted, and gamers are the ones left getting screwed over and held hostage.
@EVIL-C Listen, I don't really care. My point is that they're not limited by number, like NGDev for example, and they're available for everyone. Buy them or don't.
@PessitheMystic A lot actually. For some people a month goes by too fast, as you know I don't stay in one place all the time and every game I order online got sent directly to my P.O. box or Amazon pick-up station.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I literally don’t know who you are so I didn’t know that. But thanks, I’ll sleep easy tonight.
It would be interesting to know how decisions are made as to whether or not a game gets a standard physical release or has to go to the specialty/boutique market.
Space Invaders only received a physical release in the West through Strictly Limited Games. It still has 3% of the 3500 regular edition ($71, E60); 36% of the 2500 collectors edition ($118, E100); and 15% of the 999 ultra collectors edition ($177, E150). The games are (finally) available digitally next week — at least in North America — for $60. [Prior to this, only a three-game set could be bought in NA for $30 — both digitally or physically).
I would love to know the price point on the combined cartridge (and make sure both games are on the cartridge rather than having to download one).
Gone digital, cannot wait.
Sucks to be a UK fan when Limited Run are the publisher of a game. Tom Happ said there probably won’t be a retail release after what happened last time which sucks but is understandable- though surely there’s a more reputable publisher who’d snap at the chance to put this out for a wider/EU release? Be a huge shame not to be able to get this physically, I know I could import this but it’d just cost too much to get it here and racing to get a pre-order in before they sell out is a headache I don’t want to deal with.
@EVIL-C Agreed. Tom Happ has given some reasons for it on twitter though, saying that the last retail release was “problematic” and that “Retail sales are dropping/the distributor we were using in America (Sega) has left the business.”
I guess if this is the only way of doing it then it’s better than nothing, and he’s going to know more about the logistics of all of this than any of us, but still. I’m not sure why this couldn’t have been released in limited quantities at retail, giving everyone more of a chance to get a hold of it and giving them opportunity to produce more copies if it sold well enough. Maybe the first one didn’t do too well at retail and nobody wanted to pick up the second one for a wider release asa result, who knows!
LRG probably have a limited window to release it first. Just like Streets of Rage 4 and a few other "exclusive" titles of theirs. Terrible company.
@Meteoroid Yep. "Physical forever" they say. Then proceed to sell "limited" versions of PC games with codes. I'd rather miss-out than give them money again, personally.
@The_BAAD_Man
On Twitter;
Me:
Congrats on the release and the nice reviews so far! 💪
Will there be a physical release on the Nintendo Switch in EU?
Thanks!
Tom Happ:
Just the @LimitedRunGames game release...it will be the American version but it's not region locked. Shipping I expect will be more though?
Me:
I’ll get it there, thanks!
Let’s gooooooo!
Woooo! Das Nice yo!
@42StrikerXL
He maybe has to say that (for now) to push limited runs release. I would bet my ass on it that the game will get a proper release (worldwide, or just Europe) after timed exclusivity, as it happend to many other games in the near past. Search for grandia or NMH on playasia...
Really wanted a physical copy of Axiom Verge 2, but I’ve decided it’s not worth it. Anybody know the prices?
That strategy guide looks great though, I will probably buy a copy of that.
I am getting Axiom Verge 2 for sure!
@Fiyaball Actually LRG is cheap as hell.. Typically $25 to $40 for a standard edition game. The only thing that sucks about LRG is how long you be waiting for something 😆
@EVIL-C If not for LRG then there'd be no release, lol
@PessitheMystic "Listen, I don't really care." That's your first problem right there.
@JustMonika If it weren't for the politics of the gaming industry, more titles would get standard retail releases. My Shantae and the Seven Sirens example of being standard retail outside NA illustrates the problem of the one-time print perfectly.
Axiom Verge means instant pass for me. I couldn't stand the first game :S
Just think with these companies like this, just how much will you have to pay for your retro games in the future.
And I dare bet that several of the same people that bemoan that these things should be saved for their historical value are the ones that are fuelling this crap.
OMG that collector’s edition—SOLD
@Gwynbleidd you really think the low numbers produced won't have an effect on the future price?
The cover art reminds me of FIFA 21's cover art where everybody made fun of it for just plastering a bunch of images together
The first game got a limited run release then later retail as well. I found it at Best Buy and also saw it at Walmart.
@Gwynbleidd You hit the nail on the head.. it's usually the unpopular games that cost the most in the future because they didn't sell much thus there isn't many copies out in the wild.
