Switch Online is bolstering its lineup with a premium tier this October - made up of a collection of N64 and Mega Drive titles.
Following on from the reveal, Nintendo's website has shared some direct screens - revealing what these games will look like with the standard 4:3 template. Unfortunately, there's no menus reveals but the rest looks similar to the SNES and NES libraries.

And here are some bonus shots from Nintendo Japan's website:

What games are you looking forward to revisiting on the Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive services? Tell us below.

I'm sure I'm alone, but I am most excited for Winback out of all these 😄
I love a lot of the others but have had easy access to them for years. Winback was one of my favorite N64 games and I haven't gotten to play it in quite a while.
EDIT: Glad to see I'm not alone! 😀
When I heard the ocarina of time theme:
@sketchturner Winback’s kinda cool actually. Hope other smaller games like Glover come over.
I think I'm most excited for Paper Mario.
@sketchturner Winback is my jam. Was probably the most excited I got during the direct. Not to say I wasn't very pleased with everything else.
Fingers crossed for Tetrisphere. Absolute beauty of a game which needs to be seen by more people. Can't imagine there'd be any issues with getting that one in the line-up.
Sucks it's so limited, but I'm not paying to play games I already own.
Very glad they're making the controller. I think I'm finally going to retire my 64 and just use PC emulation.
I hope they make more colors eventually.
So glad they're not using the crappy dark filter
given that I already own them all on either Wii U or Sonic Mega Collection.... none of them.
I'm most excited for Winback because I've never played it. Of course, I'm in the minority that loves that they keep putting these new and slightly obscure NES and SNES games up rather than the same old ones I've already played.
Can't wait to play Mario Tennis.
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
Now I want N64 classic edition-that used the wireless 64 controller of course!
I’m mostly excited to play Wave Ra… oh. Well, I still get to play 1080 Sno… That’s ok, there’s always XtremeG… hmm. Seriously though, all these games need widescreen support. The 4:3 ratio ain’t cutting it for me.
I wonder if Gamecube games will eventually be added to the Switch Online subscription and if so, whether they will be included as part of the expansion pak premium or if they will charge more for access.
I'm only getting the N64 controller if they release the Atomic Purple one or one of the Funtastic versions. Nobody ever wanted to play with the grey one.
Now let's hope for:
Body Harvest
Rocket Robot on Wheels
Earthworm Jim 3D
Space Station Silicon Valley
Tetrisphere
San Francisco Rush 2049
Blast Corps
Jet Force Gemini
Robotron 64
Beetle Adventure Racing
The World is Not Enough
Road Rash 64
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
I love all the well known stuff as much as the next guy, but there were a lot of gems that got too little attention on the system.
@Gwynbleidd
But they're not taking away the subscription price that already exists nor the content that comes with it. This is literally just extra stuff you can get with a bit more money in your subscription. They're not getting rid of the current subscription types.
Then those people could just wait until more games they wanted got added before subbing.
Looks great but not for me. Do love the wireless 64 controller. I want one. Hope 8bitdo make one for the original 64
@Thwomp_Stomper I’m laughing so hard at this lol
Edit: BUT I’m a little pissed off that Mario 64 is included with this as it’s the main reason I bought the Mario 3D All-Stars.. better give me my Majoras Mask with my updated subscription for reals
Now, did they share Japanese and European screenshots, is my question.
@Gwynbleidd
Yeah, I totally get that.
I feel like the service is going to be great for some and useless and insulting for others. For me, I have a lot of the N64 games that's going to be included in this "expansion pack" but they have dead batteries in the cartridges so this will be a fantastic way for me to replay things like Ocarina.
Everyone's situation is different and some people will think it's worth it and others won't and certainly, for the people who don't, its increased price tag should be scrutinized.
I'm not thrilled with the new N64 controller because it's arguably Nintendo's worst controller. I'd rather play using a Switch Pro controller with a proper thumbstick. It was great when it first came out, but that's cause we didn't know any better.
Also, I do hope we get lesser-known N64 games like Road Rash 64 and Turok Rage Wars (imagine that online). AND CAN NINTENDO PLEASE FINALLY SHOW SOME LOVE TO PILOTWINGS 64?
Where's Clayfighters 64?
Where's Chef's Luv Shack?
On a serious note, it's funny that Nintendo went sort of out of their way to touch up Super Mario 64 when it released in 3D All-stars and made the UI look clean while also adding in rumble. But the port of Mario 64 their including in the Expansion pack is the old original release of the American version with all the glitches and "so long king Bowser" line.
I can tell because looking at the Mario icon next to the lives counter is the old crusty N64 graphics and not the cleaner one in 3D All-Stars.
Makes you wonder what was the point of tweaking that port of Mario 64 if they didn't even bother to put it in the NSO N64 app?
Ooo wouldn't it be cool if we got Shining Force?
Ridge Racer 64! Wait...
Honestly, I am looking forward to playing Yoshi's Story and Star Fox 64.
Never played winback. Looks like that is the first up for me!
Paper mario! I really wanted to play it on the switch and now its here!
I am very excited for Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 when this launches. Afterwards, I am gonna try Majora's Mask
Gimme dragon force from the Saturn, along with shining force iii
Hope they put Ogre Battle 64 and Alisia Dragoon on there someday. Both those gems are hardly available in this age of re-release.
@russell-marlow i think rumble was actually added in a second version that got released in Japan (got the international version fixes + rumble in that release).
I'll take...
Snowboard kids
Turok 2
Tetrisphere
Quake 64
Mario Golf.
@nessisonett Piko Interactive is working on an enhanced port that will come to PC and consoles.
@KayFiOS Oh boy not sure how I missed that one!
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
@Realness
I miss Xtreme G and 1080 snowboarding.
If love to play those again!
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Ogre battle 64 was my favorite 64 game.
If it was a person, I'd say it was a Person of Lordly Calibur.
@Gwynbleidd
I still see 3D all stars at Walmart. I don’t see why people would pa for switch online when they could get that.
It looks like the rewind feature might not come on the N64 games based on the bottom bar of the screenshots vs. the Sega games, which would be a bummer.
I like that feature just to streamline these retro games a bit. It would be nice to have in Mario 64 for example so I didn’t have to leave a world and go back in each time I mess up. I know some call it cheating, but these games are old and played enough at this point that I just call it convenience for enjoyment.
Beetle Adventure Racing was my entire life around age 10. Please rerelease that one.
I’m so going to play ocarina of time on Xmas morning. I’m soooo excited to have these tiles available with the proper controller as well!
@sketchturner I just came back to edit my comment so I specifically am on record mentioning Winback. Then I saw you had done so too. I absolutely love that game! I always found it so incredibly stupid though (which adds to the charm) that you sometimes have to go aaaalllll the way around something when you could have easily just climbed over it if it were in real life.
I remember specifically one part of the game where you’d merely have to duck under a railing to get where you’re going but instead you’re forced to go allllll the way around the building to shoot something to open up the path. Still, I love the game and I cannot wait (even though I still have the original cart!)
I hope those games come out, I really would love to play:
N64
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Ogre Battle 64
Command & Conquer
Mega Drive (Genesis)
After Burner II
Castle of Illusion
Desert Strike
Road Rash
Ducktales (not sure that’s the name)
Ayrton Senna Super Mônaco GP II
@sketchturner you're not alone. Winback was one of those games I wanted to try back then, but just never got around to it. I wanna play it to see what I missed out on the first time around.
Also F-Zero X will be cool to finally play again
@mikegamer Same here. I compared some of these screenshots to footage of the games on the Wii U Virtual Console, and the Switch Online versions look significantly better.
@sketchturner Trust me, you are not alone in that.
Can't wait to play winback again. I have the 64 cart just not a fully functional N64. Mine keeps rebooting it's self. Plus no good connection for modern tvs, so really excited for that one.
@sketchturner not alone on that. It's the game I'm most excited for. I have the physical game for the 64, but my consoles don't work right, so can't really play it. So this will be fun.
Let's hope that maybe the longshot is that since Nintendo and Microsoft are closer, they have been working to get goldeneye on this as well. With online multiplayer, hell yes it needs to happen.
So does this ruin our chances of getting an Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask HD remaster for the switch since the OG games will be available on the NOS?
@Don they will be behind another even more expensive paywall. You will also have to donate blood to nintendo
I will never pay for this service. But I always wanted to play body harvest. And winback. And space station Silicon Valley.
Everything else is totally played out on n64
Hopefully this will cut down the price of some physical carts
Lol as how they treated snes and nes (slow pace)
I wont be paying for their online service anymore and even the 50hz for european gamers thats a no go. Games will play slower.
For the extra money they need to fix this first.
If Banjo-Kazzoie is coming, I really hope this also means Jet Force Gemini shows up as well. Never got to finish that game...
@ncgarcez I feel like you're thinking Quackshot, which WOULD be great on the console along with Castle and World of Illusion. Heck both of those were on the Mini, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it show up at some point.
IDK if you have a 3DS, but theres a great Sega Ages port of Afterburner II that is well worth picking up. Im sad they never brought it to switch like they did with Space Harrier and OutRun
RetroArch is available through Steam, once I get the SteamDeck, the entire library of ALL of these systems and then some, will be available for free. I'll wait until then.
Really surprised yet excited for WinBack to be part of this. I loved it back in the day even though very few people have heard of it, let alone played it.
Seriously though, all these games need widescreen support.
Old games look crappy blown up to fill widescreen.
complete piece of garbage known as Mario kart 8 deluxe.
I strongly disagree with the false claim.
@sketchturner definitely not alone!
We should get some of us together for Online if Online Play works for it!
Blast Corps
Wave Race
Top Gear Overdrive
WWF No Mercy
Pilotwings
Glover
Space Station Silicon Valley
The New Tetris (loved the strange music and the monuments you are building)
Oh, so many great games would be possible…
@Gwynbleidd,
Out of interest, how do you know what the reasons for many people subscribing to the online service are, surely this is only your own subjective opinion, that it's because more games are going to be added.
Some may subscribe mainly for the online play and will not even touch the retro games, I know my sister never plays them.
Tbh I'm just happy I'm gonna be able to create memories playing these games online now that I have the money and a group of nintendo gamer friends to do so
I know it's not a big deal for many. But there was literally no way to play Dr Mario 64 before this. Cartridges were region bound, and it came at the end of the 64 lifespan. Emulation still can't get the damn thing to work flawlessly.
So this is the first proper chance for me to play this. And I'm so excited!!
@Bass_X0 People like that are just looking for the attention and retorts, so its not even worth responding to.
I've never had the chance to properly experience N64 games outside of Super Mario 64 and the OoT/MM 3DS remakes, so I'm looking forward to trying all these games and seeing just how far series like Mario Golf, Tennis and hopefully Super Smash Bros have come over the years!
@sketchturner yeah beetle adventure racing was great apart the uk version with the worst pal conversion I seen on the n64 with black borders on all four sides of the screen unless my memory is playing tricks on me in my old age
Love this, only one thing i don’t understand. Why isn’t there a tool to upscale the n64 titles like the Mario 64 in the 3D all-stars collection. Fps, 16:9 and sharpness….. That’s all i want….
They want us to pay extra for this? Lol.
i wonder how i'd feel if it was just a retro gaming service and online wasn't charged for like it's been for a long time including the first year and a half of the switches life, i think i'd take it better.
I'm not willing to pay extra for that!!! I would take the N64 controller, only if it's compatible with all other Switch games. But that's it.
I have an original N64. There are good emulators and there is the Everdrive module available. I don't need emulator N64 games with subscription from Nintendo!!!
@Gwynbleidd,
I get that's what you feel personally, but no matter what the service offers, there is no definitive way to tell way the majority of people subscribe to it.
As I said before for my sister it's purely online play, for me I like the retro games, but must admit to not playing them all that much, so again the online is the biggest factor.
From the initial reveal I always thought main chargeable elements were online play and cloud saves, with the retro contend as a bonus, who knows perhaps others see it that way as well, but without any real information it's all just personal opinions.
Pretty sure if Nintendo thought they could earn lots of money from it, there would be a Virtual console service, my bet is the sales for both the Wii and Wii U were not all that stellar, hence it being tied into a subscription based online service, looking deeper into that view, the Wii was purchased by a lot of casuals who would have been not all that interested in the retro content, and nobody bought the Wii U, makes perfect sense to me.
I’m not even sure if I still have an NSO subscription, as I last played a couple of SNES games about six months ago. But the addition of some N64 titles is enough to pique my interest. Hopefully they add titles at a better pace, and I’m desperate to play Wave Race, 1080, plus a bunch of Rare games again - should they ever get added. Super-curious about what price they’ll charge…
My sub has just auto renewed so I’m keen to see how much it’ll be to upgrade.
I’m most excited for Sin & Punishment and Paper Mario. Yoshi’s Story for my son.
Hoping we also get Pokémon Stadium 1&2
@mikegamer where was the dark filter used? Just curious
Wish they'd give you options for that ugly border & that you could hide your user icon too.
@ncgarcez Quackshot was the MegaDrive DuckTales equivalent and you’re right - it was great! Sadly it wasn’t on the MegaDrive mini so I’m hoping for to turn up on NSO too…
@Styrophoamicus i dont agree with the first part of your comment as personally i loved the 64 pad and imo N64 games just dont feel the same with a conventional controller but your second part i can get behind 100%. Id sub for a year for this game alone. Its also never been released on and virtual console wich also baffles be beyond belief. I hope we get it this time 👌👌
@Pokester99,
To be honest I am not so sure they are going after the illegal emulated P.C crowd.
Do these controllers use Bluetooth? I mean, can you use them on other platforms as well?
Never played Dr Mario 64. That'll be the first thing I'll play on there.
I've noticed they haven't used the 3D All stars version of Mario 64. It's probably for the best, people would probably complain otherwise
I just hope someone gets them working on original hardware. Would love them
to work wireless on original hardware.
Have all the Mario 64 I need, but I've never played the N64 Zelda or Paper Mario titles. Maybe I'll just buy them for Wii U so I get to keep them, though.
That said, if my Wii U HDD fails, I won't have them anymore once the e-shop is gone
Banjo Kazooie! Coming in the first game update
Give me Wave Race 64 with this pad of GTFO !
@Codessa Quake remastered already exists with N64 graphical settings, dummy.
Removed - unconstructive
@johnvboy I think the Wii’s VC sales were pretty good. It was a no brained for the 3DS, but I’m not so sure they were planning on it originally for the Wii U due to the dual boot on the system for the Wii.
They were responsible for ALL the games for VC, it didn’t matter if they were theirs, 3rd party or a different console, Nintendo was handling the development and porting of these titles. It was probably a way to free up resources for other projects and games within the company. The Wii U’s abysmal sales easily sealed its fate too.
I wish Nintendo would release collections for us to purchase. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on a NES Remix style anthology, where you get the originals plus all of them remixed. I’ll even take individual franchise collections too.
With regular Directs starting to come back, I think Nintendo is getting back to firing on all cylinders after this pandemic started. I think 2022 will be an interesting year.
Not gonna sub right away, but thats just cause I own every game that they are offering already lol, physically
I'm definitely buying that N64 controller. I compared it to an original N64 controller, and you can tell the thumbstick is different, because the original has a hole in the center. Anyone who had an N64 controller knows that the joystick on them is absolute crap, So I'm glad even Nintendo is acknowledging it, and hopefully replacing it with something better.
A great list. But I really want Pokémon Stadium on Switch. One of my all time favourites back in the day.
Does this mean we won’t get the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition?
@eltomo I absolutely LOVED the Winback multiplayer. In particular, the mode where you compete to collect all the color blocks. My best friend and I had some INTENSE matches on that! Sometimes a single round would take us an hour because we kept stealing each other's cubes!
I didn't heard about Winback before, but it sounds really cool, they got me when they said "Metal Gear for the N64". Will be the first thing I play on the N64 app.
never played ocarina of time, so looking forward to play that first
Pretty hyped to finally play the original Paper Mario (when it releases on NSO) for the first time.
Sounds cool if the price is right, playing them with N64 controllers is going to make these a lot better than regular emulation playing with a standard controller. I just wish there was random matchmaking, or lobbies. Same with the NES and SNES, but the N64 had things like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64 where being able to get into a quick match would make a huge difference.
Please bring online Wave Race 64!
Goldeneye 007 (obviously).
I'm surprised that nobody's pointed out the fact that N64 games appear to be natively rendered at 1080p, unlike the Wii U VC releases, which were rendered at their native resolution and upscaled to 1080p.
This will only be particularly noticeable with 3D assets though. Most on-screen text, logos, and 2D sprites will continue to look like poo.
@Gwynbleidd,
Perhaps the Wii U killed the Virtual console service, and those mini console devices will not have helped either, they were pretty popular but again not telling Nintendo to make a Virtual console service, of course the Switch with is installed base
would give the service the best possible chance.
As for the online service generally being seen as poor value is pretty much subjective, as outside niche forums. "which even they can't all agree", we have no evidence either way as to the wider markets acceptance of the service.
No interest in this at all.
None.
I own all of them and all the rest that are coming.
I still play my 64 regularly, glad others will get to play some truly great games but if it's as fast as the rate they've been drip feeding NES and SNES then it's going to be a long wait.
I am hoping for some more obscure games like Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Beetle Adventure Racing, Forsaken, and a few of the other Acclaim games which were prolific on N64 such as Extreme G, South Park, Iggy's Reckin Balls, Bust a Move etc.
As they are emulated games, I want to see 60fps. There is no reason why they should not be.
@Styrophoamicus
I'm willing to bet that they'll do the same thing that they did with Joy Cons and offer "repairs"
EVERY SINGLE ONE THEY HAVE
@sketchturner 1st commenter!
nice, more Puyo Puyo 2 on switch
I am looking forward to Banjo Kazooie the most myself! As well as Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask. My girlfriend also wants both Pokemon Stadium games too!
Really suprised at Winback, that was a clunky one on release. I'd have preferred Hybrid Heaven or some of the classic Wrestling games (WWE should smell the money on those).
Bit moot for myself as i haven't renewed NSO, but interesting to see what is on offer.
@russell-marlow Clayfighters is tough. I don't know that anyone even wholly knows who owns the rights to it. Interplay is "sort of out of business, sort of still exists, retains some of the rights to some things, auctioned off the others." It's a mess of a shell of a shadow company. Like Atari but even less coherent. Some hedge fund hostilly took it over in the early '00s, kicked out the founder/CEO (Brian Fargo of inExile, now at Xbox), and had to liquidate a lot of IP in the lawsuits (they weren't paying studios owed royalties, notably Bioware and Volition.)
At the time they had a lot of licensed games (D&D, Star Trek ,etc.) so there weren't permanent losses. Their biggest IP, Fallout, got sold to Bethesda, and other lesser IPS like MDK and Clayfighters got lost in confusing legal soup.
@Hunt3r_Cr0wl3y On SNES, NES and N64 games. This is fact. Look at Fire Emblem on the Switch, that used the Wii U NES emulator and it sucks. Too dark.
@TheBigK That’s one of the launch games iirc.
@NEStalgia Bruh, that was a joke you didn't have to give me the history of what happened to that series or its developer.
