If you're a fan of early '90s style vertical shooters featuring pumping FM soundtracks and delightful pixel art stylings — and let's face it, who isn't? — then Pieslice Productions' Crisis Wing might just be right up your bullet strewn street.
We're getting pretty sweet Truxton vibes off this one with its rather dark heavy metal atmosphere and, according to the official press release, there looks to be plenty to dig into here for retro shmup enthusiasts:
• Master 7 challenging stages in frantic vertical shooting action.
• Overcome enormous bosses and mini-bosses!
• Test your limits in extra game modes.
• Play solo or with friends in local co-op.
• Turn on CRT filters for an old-school feel.
• Enjoy beautiful pixel art presentation set to a rocking FM soundtrack!
Crisis Wing released on Steam back in September of last year — where it's currently sat on a 'Positive' rating — and finally shoots its way onto Switch on 22nd September.
Are you looking forward to diving into some retro shmup action later this month? Let us know below!

Doesn't look overly original in terms of enemy and bullet patterns, but I'll keep an eye on it and see if it's a decent price!
I know it simulates the shape of an old arcade machine, but I do not like playing games on one third of my screen.
@Moistnado It's less about "simulating the arcades" and more about that using the entire width of the screen would break the whole game concept ^^
There are plenty of modern Shmups who do that and it works fine, but you need to approach them quite differently.
A classic Shmup really needs this narrow format to work ^^
If it comes with a flip-grip, so you can use the full screen on it's side. I mean, if they put a game on a switch, they should make effort to make sure it fits the console.
I’d love a port of Radiant Silvergun
Tate mode or no buy.
Looks interesting but depends on price.
Then again I am quite the skinflint when it comes to digital only games. I still can’t bring myself to buy the Capcom Arcade Stadium despite the number of games involved.
This looks great. I'll definitely keep an eye on this as I heard great things about it.
@Moistnado I know years ago someone made a Flash game that was imply widescreen Tetris. It was as bad of a joke as it sounds.
I would say the same applies to vertical shooters: wide screen means more space to have to cover.
Though "Crisis" and "early '90s". Can only think of Crisis Force for the Famicom. Perhaps one example of peak Konami: even one of their perhaps less original works still had some great presentation to save it.
Looks good but uninspired. Will keep an eye out for a review.
@RandomNerds For what it's worth, the Steam version features "Screen rotation support to take full benefit from rotatable displays." So I think tate is definitely in the cards at least.
@Moistnado This is why I bought a rotating monitor. So when I play vertical shmups, I switch to TATE mode and it's gorgeous.
Have this on Steam. It's a very good Truxton/Tatsujin clone. A nice SHMUP that I love. Will get the Swtich version on later date or may be during sales.
