If you have fond memories of 2D pixel fighting games and sometimes wish you could just return to this golden era, you might want to keep an eye on Blazing Strike published by Aksys Games and developed by RareBreed Makes Games.
We first heard about this one back in May and now in an update, the team has released a first look trailer. It's not hiding the fact it takes plenty of inspiration from the classics such as Capcom's Street Fighter series:
"Inspired by classic arcade fighting game series from industry greats such as Capcom and SNK, the upcoming 2D fighting game from developer RareBreed Makes Games is Blazing Strike evokes the excitement and nostalgia of 2D pixel art genre pioneers while incorporating a unique games system with modern mechanics."
Here's a little extra information, courtesy of our previous post:
"Blazing Strike features a 4-button system with six normal attacks: light, medium and heavy punches and kicks, as well as three defense moves: block, guard and parry. A Rush Trigger enables fighters to execute fast-paced attacks and movements, but using it will slowly drain the Rush Meter, sending the character into a temporary groggy state. This allows players to execute exciting combos while having to manage the Rush Meter. The game will include three play modes: Story Mode, Arcade Mode and VS Mode, with training, sparring and online match via Persona AI, and online play powered by GGPO."
Blazing Strike is scheduled to arrive at some point next year across "various platforms" including the Nintendo Switch.
This reveal was part of Aksys's recent Twitch showcase, which you can learn more about in our round-up post of the event. Six other games were showcased.

this is looking super promising, especially for an indie fighter, but i'll hold actual judgement until it comes out, already got burned by pocket rumble
Characters look great but it needs more frames of animation
I absolutely love the art and art direction, but what's going on with the vaseline filter in the trailer?
Backed this one, but unfortunately it was not enough. But nice to see that it will happen anyway.
Looks cool but just some clear full view gameplay would have been nicer than having all the camera work and filters and overlaid visuals and so on.
Bart: 2D pixel art street fights are back?
Comic Book Guy: 2D pixel art street fights never left...
@somebread Do you mean how Chucklefish never supported pocket rumble? I am bummed they never updated the game and added another character, but I still think it is a solid and fun fighting game to play with friends.
Looks 2x better than KOFXV which isn't coming to Switch anyways.
Looks ok, still a far cry from greatest stuff from SNK and Capcom.
The art is lovely but the way is shows up in the trailer is a bit of a mixed bag. I'll probably still get this as I am a sucker for 2D fighters of any kind.
Looks great, but there is some weird filter that makes it look awful.
@Specter_of-the_OLED sure, KoF XIV and XV looks so bland and boring...if they weren't KoF games I would have never bought them.
Looks like a mugen game.
I sure hope that that faux-CRT filter is optional, 'cuz it looks like sh*t. Much rather have clean, crisp pixilation.
This is a game that looks to attempt duplication of SNK fighters, rather than paying tribute to them.
There's a big, bold line between inspired and derivative.
Will probably give this one a shot. There is a pretty good selection of FGs on Switch but an old-school footsies fighter would be nice even if it isn't perfect.
Is. There. Crossplay!? Just behind GGPO crossplay is my most desired thing with fighters. If Power Rangers and Fantasy Strike can have crossplay why do so few other fighting games have it?
@CharlieGirl see I figured it was more SFIII based on the music
Im confused. Article says a 4 button system, but it has 6 normal attacks?
Wow just like street fighter 3
Looking good
Wonder if it will go on cart?
Great to see this game happen, pretty sure this was originally a failed KS from about four years ago.
The Stills give me a much better feeling than the game footage. Hopefully the final product runs a bit more smoothly and the combat connects as fluidly as SF 3 Third strike
