Even if, as is the case for this scribe, your childhood is but a distant memory in sepia tones, you've likely heard of NERF - the guns, specifically. Big plastic weapons that fire little foam darts at surprising velocity, they're still very popular toys (are we allowed to call them toys or is that too uncool?).
Now there's a decent-looking licensed game heading to Switch and pretty much every major platform in October - NERF: Legends. As you can see in the trailer above it's targeting the youngsters of today by repeating the lyrics "I'm a SAVAGE" over and over again, but that aside it looks like a competent and colourful shooter.
To be fair, according to the blurb below it could have quite a lot to offer, including cross-platform multiplayer and a solo campaign.
- Pull off amazing trick shots with 15 authentic NERF blasters from the Mega, Ultra and Elite lines, including new releases from 2021!
- Intense single-player campaign featuring a variety of extreme enemies, boss battles and challenges across 19 out-of-this-world locations.
- Supercharge your blasting with power-ups like magnetic pull darts, push darts, seeker darts, and slow darts to change the tide of battle.
- Create your own custom character, and personalize your blasters with upgradeable perks and skins.
- Test your might against real players in 4v4 team-based and eight-player free-for-all online multiplayer matches featuring cross-platform play across consoles.
Let us know if you're a SAVAGE in the comments - oh, and if you plan to pick this up in October.

Call of Duty: Plastic Ops Foam War
I like that there is a proper single player campaign, unlike Overwatch, which this is clearly imitating. Yeah, I'll keep an eye on this one.
Noticed GameMill is the publisher. Hard pass. Easily one of my least favorite publishers. More shovelware comes out from that house than most others.
Please guys, get on topic.
I'M A SAVAGE.
We... have... Fortnite... why bother trying?
this nerf thing is a dumb toy, kids play one afternoon with it then forget its existence for good, now for this game, they deserve a benefit of the doubt or should we assume that it will be dumb as well?
I remember the nerf gun wii game with the nerf peripheral. Ha.
@abdias Haha nerf go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
@abdias Not sure if serious.
Coming summer 2022: Pool Noodle: the Legend of Marco Polo.
I’m down of the single player is good
FPS fanatic. I’m in. Day 1.
@abdias Have 3 younger brothers and a younger tomboy sister. The nerf guns were popular toys in our family. It help settle many arguments. : P
@abdias LMAO, I don't what kids you're basing this on, but you have no idea how many NERF darts I've had to buy my kids. It's pretty much the definition of an evergreen toy for the last four decades.
This game might turn out to be the worst video game ever, but NERF definitely isn't.
This gameplay is similar to how it felt like to play with nerf guns
I’m actually very excited for this lol, never had a Nerf gun but this game looks like a lot of fun.
It's Nerf or Nothing
This October?! It’s such a tough decision between this and Metroid: Dread. How ever will I choose?
Wow, so if you call the ammunition a plastic bullet and you can get a 7 age rating on a shooting game now, at least with splatoon is obvious to the difference.
Well at least my 8 yr old will be happy because I won't let him play fortnite.
@Magician I know most of their games aren't too good, but one of their recent games, Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix, is actually enjoyable.
