The new Arc System Works' published RWBY game (originally announced last September) has been officially revealed as RWBY: Arrowfell. This side-scrolling 2D adventure will be developed by the Shantae, River City Girls and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp developer WayForward in conjunction with Rooster Teeth.
It's been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch, can be played alone with friends (local and online), includes all four characters of Team RWBY, broadcast quality cutscenes and is expected to arrive in 2022. In addition to a digital release, there'll also be a physical release on select platforms. Here's a bit the backstory the RBWY series, including information about Arrowfell, along with a teaser trailer:
In a world filled with horrific monsters bent on death and destruction, humanity's hope lies with powerful Huntsmen and Huntresses. Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long are four such Huntresses in training whose journeys will take them far past the grounds of their school, Beacon Academy. Though each may be powerful on their own, these four girls must overcome dark forces and work as a team if they truly hope to become the next generation of Remnant's protectors.
Occurring during the events of RWBY Volume 7, RWBY: Arrowfell is an original interactive chapter straight from RWBY writers Kerry Shawcross, Miles Luna, and Eddy Rivas. Players will take control of Team RWBY — Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long — and switch between them on the fly in solo or multiplayer action (local or online) as they use their trademark weapons and semblances to stop a mysterious new threat in this side-scrolling, 2D adventure.
As players explore Atlas, Mantle, and numerous surrounding environments, they will face off against the Creatures of Grimm and other enemies straight from the show, as well as never-before-seen threats. The team also crosses paths with familiar faces including General Ironwood and the Ace Operatives, plus a fearless new group of Huntresses known as Team BRIR.
In addition to voiceovers from the original cast (including Lindsay Jones as Ruby, Kara Eberle as Weiss, Arryn Zech as Blake, and Barbara Dunkleman as Yang), RWBY: Arrowfell features an original score by Dale North with vocal contributions by Casey Lee Williams. Furthermore, the game contains seven minutes of exclusively created broadcast-quality animated cutscenes, as well as a dynamic new hand-drawn art style for the in-game visuals that allows fans to experience the world of RWBY like never before.
Earlier this year in May, RWBY: Grimm Eclipse - Definitive Edition was released on the Switch. You can learn more about this game in our previous post.

If Japanese voiceovers will be in the game... sigh
That's sick they gave those characters from BlazBlue Cross Tag their own game. They should totally do a show about them one day like that Yu Narukami dude
@TheFrenchiestFry nah…. It will fall apart by season 4 or 5
But the sound truck will probably be awesome
@Tantani The budget will probably run out by Season 3 as well for better animation
One of the few Wayforward games ill pass on.
I don't get this design choice... it feels like the game downgrades whenever it goes into gameplay...
Hopefully it's better than the last rwby game, god that was awful and it's online was non existent
I binged the whole serie this year, so I'm definitly interested in some RWBY games!
Though... it's weird to see that they opted for such a different artstyle in the gameplay....it seems off somehow.
I will be as honest as I can the gameplay and design looks...weird. I mean look at river city girls and shantae!
Tbh I´m kinda disapointed with wayforward, but the game might suffer a lot of changes, before it´s release date. Therefore, as for now definitely a no buy for me.
@Chibi_Manny I assumed they would utilize the sprite work from BBTAG, not the Shantae engine. It’s not bad per se, just unexpected. Makes me wonder what ASW contributed and how.
I already have Grimm Eclipse and I’ll get this next year too.
@BakaKnight How is the show? I am interested but I am afraid it might become cliche. Is it any good?
Wayforward rarely releases a flop. This is one way to get me interested in RWBY again.
@MysteryCupofJoe season 1-3 are amazing (but low budget)
The creator and lead animator sadly died after season 3 and the budget rose yet the quality of the story and choreography of the fight fell IMO
I watched until season 5 or so and left….
I never liked the character designs/art style in RWBY from Volume 4 onwards (hardly anything pops out at you) so I think it was smart going for a different art style in game. However it’s gonna take some real interesting gameplay to buy anything related to RWBY and I hope Wayforward can pull it off. Hoping it’s something like Dust: An Elysian Tale.
@ATaco They release them all the time, like with the latest Bakugan game. You gotta hope they're having the dev team that actually cares make it (Shantae, Mummy Demastered, etc) and not their shovelware team (Bakugan, Trollhunters)
Still not the anime I'm waiting to see get a VG adaptation (Rising of the Shield Hero plz!) but good for fans of this series that like it.
RWBY is like so many things I enjoy, hated by many many people.
Like Pokemon and Star Wars, you just can't have a conversation about it. There will be 776256155 people waiting to tell you that everything you like about it is terrible, you're a terrible person for liking it, and you liking it is part of why it sucks.
@Heavyarms55 yep, btw, i like that game. Look forward to this release date
I would like a RWBY Chibi 3D game. That would be fun. Even if just in Aesthetic.
@MysteryCupofJoe Personally I really enjoyed it, that's why I couldn't stop watching it till there were no episodes left.
It's not perfect and there are some tone and style changes as the story progress (between being a long serie and having lost the original creator I guess it was unavoidable), but I think it's an interesting ride worth checking out from start to finish...well, current finish as it's still an on-going serie.
Also sorry if I'm vague, but I believe this is a serie that it's more enjoyable the less you know when going in, I just definitly recommand you to give it a chance.
@Vyacheslav333 Why would you want Japanese voiceovers? While the series uses an anime-esque style, it's a Western production made originally in English (and features a lot of good voice acting). It would be like asking for a Japanese dub in a "Teen Titans" or "Avatar the Last Airbender" game.
@MysteryCupofJoe Actually, the creator died after Volume 2, but he left behind detailed notes for the rest of the story.
Anyway, you can always nitpick here or there, but the show is excellent overall. You certainly don't have to worry about it becoming cliche.
Those animations look sick! Monty would be proud
@BulbasaurusRex I want it because of BBTAG's RWBY Japanese voiceovers. Characters was voiced really good. And I thought, that series and other games have Japanese voiceovers. But, how I understand, it doesn't.
@Vyacheslav333 Well, the series does have a Japanese dub like any other popular Western franchise that's brought over to Japan, but unless Japanese is your native language, you're much better off with the original English voices, which are also excellent and provide you with the dialogue as originally intended rather than losing context through translation.
@BulbasaurusRex Okay. I just prefer playing games with Japanese voiceovers, if they are presented in the games and available to choose on.
Lost interest in RWBY ages ago (the story/series that is, but I like the characters), but a 2D action game by WayForward is always going to get my attention.
Sad...this looks cheap. Shouldve just made a BlazBlue like fighting game, with all of the Rwby cast, every team villan etc. Everybody. And no crosstag wasn't satisfactory, they shortcutted the usual mechanics for noobs. I want traditional BlazBlue game mechanics and controls.
