UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 10th July, revealing that Monster Hunter Stories 2 has managed to grab third place in its debut week.
The game was outsold by FIFA 21 (which is perhaps not all that surprising considering all the Euro 2020 hype), and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the latter of which has returned to number one after a couple of weeks away.
The result means that Stories 2 hasn't managed to match the success of Monster Hunter Rise, which debuted in first place when it launched back in March. The game does lead a long list of Switch exclusives all lined up in the top ten, however, with Nintendo-only games making up half of the table.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
6 |
1 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart |
2 |
2 | FIFA 21 |
- |
3 | Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin |

4 | Mario Golf: Super Rush |

5 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |

6 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |

7 | Minecraft (Switch Edition) |
17 |
8 | Assassin's Creed Valhalla |

To bad, MHS 2 are a really, really good game!
I thought Nintendo was doomed in the U.K, the the PS5 and Series X being released.
@Sveakungen Don't worry, the Japan sales are bound to be monstrous.
@johnvboy You have to consider that there has been shortages of consoles all over the world. Had there not been, PlayStation and Xbox would no doubt be dominating. As soon as they can get the systems back into stores, things will more than likely turn around. Whilst it's like this, it's great news for Nintendo, especially when your system is now 4 and a half years old and with outdated specs
Pretty good! Monster Hunter is not that big in the West yet, and a JRPG is never going to sell very well unless it's called Final Fantasy. Therefore, being third I think is something to be happy about. I hope it finishes selling pretty well.
Anyway, I still think MHS2 should have been delayed to September... Not just because this month is pretty packed with JRPGs, but because that way they would've had time to improve the performance and released it polished. There was no rush at all, and the reviews have been a bit tough with the game because of that issue, mainly.
Makes sense as its a JRPG compared to the main series and more anime like, i bet its done better in Japan though.
As for the game itself well its fantastic and very addictive, it does a better job at Pokemon then Pokemon does and its full of love for MH as a whole. Between this, Rise and Village i can safely say Capcom are killing it this year with some of its best games.
@Sveakungen
i actually think its pretty good for it expected it to place lower.
were did y's ix place?
My copy is arriving hopefully tommorow.
@fox_mattcloud,
The switch does have outdated specs, but the masses will have little issue with this, calling it now the Switch will sell at least 130 million consoles in it's lifecycle, the PS5 and Series X are in a different market, and are not competing with the Switch directly.
With FIFA 22 revealed yesterday, FIFA 21 will be leaving the charts soon (it happens every year, FIFA plummets shortly after the new entry is announced). Combined with Skyward Sword HD launching next week and PS5 continuing to get stock, I think we're in for some interesting charts in the near future.
@fox_mattcloud I’m not so sure about that. The shortages probably hurt PS5 and Xbox sales over Christmas last year but they seem to be readily available for those who really want one now.
From a software perspective I’m not sure I’d expect PS5 games to be dominating the sales charts (even here in the UK) yet because the software released simply hasn’t been exciting enough.
Switch wise you’d probably say the same (and the sales charts right now are probably reflective of low sales across the board) but Switch now has a vast install base and strong retail presence.
It will all get a lot more difficult for Nintendo after this Christmas when there are a lot more PS5s in the hands of consumers and genuinely exciting next gen games become more common but - either way it’s a huge turn around for Nintendo in the UK. Remember when Asda refused to stock Nintendo products after the Wii U?
Waiting on @westman98’s extra information for some context 😊 always appreciated, thank you!
Mario Golf Super Rush UK retail sales:
> Week 1: ~16,500
> Week 2: ~8,000
> Week 3: ~4,500
Ratchet and Clank sales sold ~7,500 last week, so Monster Hunter Stories 2 sales should be between 4,500-7,500, probably closer to the lower end of that spectrum.
Shouldn’t we be comparing monster Hunter stories to the first one not rise? I actually think 3rd is good going it was never goanna beat rise as that’s a main title.
the 3DS Monster Hunter Stories didn't do nowhere as good Stroes 2 is doing, it never got to top 10 best pre ordered games on Amazon and never in the top 10 charts
I think Stories has come out too soon after a massive and ongoing time sink like Rise. Would've been much better coming out in September/October. (not too close to Pokemon)
@quigtendo Not really as they have completely different gameplay. Releasing this now is far better then just a few months before PM considering they are both so alike.
@westman98 sales of Mario Golf are dropping 50% a week, and have fallen into 4th place in the above chart. Maybe people do read the reviews and are giving this game a miss, for now anyway.
I bought Mario Golf because I got 42% off, a good deal for the content on offer and it is fun to play.
I hope Nintendo alter their strategy and stop releasing half finished games or at least price the game accordingly. They deserve low sales for taking us for granted.
@fox_mattcloud Nah… They wouldn’t be dominating. Especially the XBox. That would still be dominated by the Switch. It would be competitive with the PS5
Not so grate to not be able to top the charts in the first week (it sold 2x the original but nothing great overall)
@WallyWest well yes and no. Its a different genre but it is the same series. If you've just spend the last few months and hundreds of hours playing Rise, you might want a break.. and it might also cause confusion in stores with less informed consumers thinking it is an expansion etc.
"Nintendoomed" eh?
Anyway, tbf, would love Ratchet and
Clank on the Switch
Good to see the physical market is still strong. I'm going game shopping this Thursday to game and my local independent shop. I dread a digital only future.
Can't believe both UK and Japan are that crazy about Minecraft that much that it's still selling to this day.
@Balta666 how’s that not great selling more then the original is always a plus and will be what capcom is looking at.
Good to see Stories 2 doing well. 💚💚
@Outerdragon maybe but the first one did not sell particularly well as it was released on 3ds when switch was already a thing só I was expecting more

@zool
> Hitman 3 sales dropped dropped 68% in its 2nd week and another 54% in its 3rd week.
> Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury sales dropped 61% in its 2nd week and another 38% in its 3rd week.
> Monster Hunter Rise sales dropped dropped 74% in its 2nd week and another 56% in its 3rd week.
> New Pokemon Snap sales dropped dropped 63% in its 2nd week and another 66% in its 3rd week.
> Returnal sales dropped dropped 84% in its 2nd week and another 27% in its 3rd week.
> Resident Evil Village sales dropped dropped 59% in its 2nd week and another 61% in its 3rd week.
> Miitopia sales dropped dropped 45% in its 2nd week and another 19% in its 3rd week.
> Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart sales increased 2% in its 2nd week and dropped 78% in its 3rd week.
> Mario Golf Super Rush sales dropped dropped 52% in its 2nd week and another 42% in its 3rd week.
Mario Golf Super Rush has shown better "legs" that all of those games I just listed outside of Miitopia and maybe Ratchet & Clank (whose sales are heavily tied to PS5 stock)
@StuTwo readily available where? Yes you can buy a series s at quite a few retailers, but the series X and ps5 sell out in seconds. Unless you mean ebay.
@westman98 shows that people just need to except Mario golf has done well.
@westman98 it does show that none of the games have done particularly well, and the first week was I guess, partly due to pre orders anyway.
@zool
"Mario Golf week-over-week sales drops are bad."
"Well actually, based on these stats, Mario Golf has better legs than most other games released this year."
"That means all games are selling bad."
LOL at the coping. Just accept that you were wrong and move on.
People have to keep in mind that unlike Rise, Stories 2 is available on PC which splits the sales
@fox_mattcloud I don’t think we will be able to get PS5 or Series X without hassle till next year, maybe even next summer. This really is a perfect storm for Nintendo, sitting on a nearly 100MM user base soon.
@LEGEND_MARIOID the Ratchet and Clank games on Nintendo Switch would be pretty awesome.

@rockodoodle I got one out of pure luck via the GameStop all access restock in the US a couple weeks ago. The website glitched out and it took me an hour to get it to go through, then GameStop sent me two Xbox series x’s and I still can’t view my all access balance as it hasn’t updated. I don’t kno what to do with it 🤷♂️
