Rats can get a bit of bad press at times - just this week A Plague Tale: Innocence - Cloud Version arrived on Switch to show hordes of rats as terrifying creatures of death. Tails of Iron is one game keen to show that they're not all bad, though.
Developed by UK-based Odd Bug Studio and published by United Label, Tails of Iron is an RPG adventure that showcases a rather nice visual style. It arrives on Switch via the eShop and at retail on 17th September, with Doug Cockle (previous credits include Geralt of Rivera in the Witcher series) on board as narrator of the tale. The physical retail versions will also include the Crimson Knight DLC pack that includes 12 different cosmetic skins.
You play as a noble heir of the rat throne trying to fight off your deadly foes, frogs. We think it looks rather promising in the trailer; below is the official feature list.
- Brutal combat, inspired by the souls-like genre, featuring dodge-rolls, parry bashes, and fatal executions.
- A vast and treacherous Kingdom, comprising six distinct biomes, each with its own hidden paths and secrets;
- A compelling story, narrated by the deep, raspy vocals of the legendary Doug Cockle;
- Customizable attack styles with a vast array of distinct weapons and armor;
- A range of side quests offering players additional gold-on-the-side;
- Hidden blueprints to forge new and powerful weapons;
- Savage boss fights against the Frog Clan’s deadly, oversized generals;
- A gorgeous and lovingly-crafted 2D hand-drawn art style.
Let us know what you think - one for the wishlist?

First? Looks great!
Rats are brilliant, big fan. Certainly the best small pet by a country mile and I wouldn't expect a war between them and frogs to be much of a contest.
This looks good. That reminds me: what happened to Curse of the Sea Rats?
Wow, this actually looks very nice. I'll keep an eye out for it but the release is a bit unfortunate as it comes out around the same time as WarioWare.
It looks cool, but i'll wait for the reviews and see what the difference in performance is between platforms.
This looks delightful.
Ummmm…so, this totally looks like “Salt & Sanctuary But With Adorable Rats” and I’m HERE for it. 💎
For redwalll!!
Don't like the animation, but everything else looks good. Will wait for reviews.
I am starting to get into RPGs. This one is on my radar.
@oatmaster Hear, hear! My avatar is not a coincidence...
Nice to see rats as the good guys for once. I’m definitely intrigued by this.
@Roam85 Redwall is a great series! Has anyone here played the game? I imagine it is not comparable to the stories at all.
Frogs as the enemy? I'm feeling amphibiant about that.
Looks cool- but come on guys can we start making new combat systems that aren’t just attack and then roll away? I mean I like that classic souls style but I’m getting kind of tired of seeing it in this many games.
"The race of rats has prospered"
"Peasants toiled"
"Kings ruled"
Is toiling prosperity? I ask you, my rat brothers, are frogs our enemies or are kings?
@oatmaster Rats are amazing. I work with them all the time as a vet tech and they are by far my favorite rodents to work on. I've also had them as pets myself and they are just so much fun. They get a bad rap for Reasons but I've known hundreds of rats and literally never met a bad one.
Game looks fun, I'll be watching for reviews on this one, but I'm already inclined to buy it.
@oatmaster I dunno, the larger bullfrogs could probably snack on rats.
But as an owner of three of the cute little rodents I concur, they need some positive representation too!
@Purgatorium Sounds to me like Tooth and Tail would be more your cup of tea.
While the general aesthetic of that flat paper look with independent limbs is generally not my taste, I do like what they managed to pull of visually. The overall art direction looks very strong and quite charming. I also want to commend them for showing a lot of gameplay in the trailer so that I could actually see it, and for not having the screen shake along with every action that takes place in the game. I'll definitely be looking out for the review.
@sdelfin Agreed. Usually, this kind of animation turns me off quite quickly, but paired with the art style, it kinda makes sense? It looks like a kids picture-book (the kind this 37 year old grew up with) that has come to life.
I am not even a Souls fan, and the term souls-like inspires nothing but apathy from me generally, but this looks amazing. Atmosphere is everything - I am soooo down for it.
Fingers crossed the Switch port is up to snuff
Any idea on the fps? I'm asking because 30 fps content looks pretty bad on my TV, and would get this on another platform if its 30 fps on the switch.
