It's hard to believe now, but Rune Factory 5 was originally scheduled to arrive on the Nintendo Switch in 2020.
It only just landed on the Switch in Japan last month, and while the western release was expected to follow, the latest E3 2021 trailer has now confirmed it'll instead be arriving early next year.
Here's a bit about what to expect, courtesy of the official YouTube description:
A new stage, a new adventure! The curtain rises on the next chapter in the Rune Factory series.
Set off on a grand adventure in a fantasy world with the latest entry in the Rune Factory simulation RPG series. After losing their memory, the hero lands in a small town blessed by nature. There, they are recruited into a band of peacekeeping rangers, and their new life begins. In addition to their normal duties, the hero can farm the land, cast a line into the nearby river, and so much more! Team up with townsfolk to battle monsters and unleash powerful combination attacks—just one of the features new to the series.

That... is a long way off. I might just import.
Oof thats a long way
What's so hard about localization for Japanese games?
@Rpg-lover Translation and localization take time.
Still no Lego Starwars release date & now this!?
if Lego Starwars ends up digital only, I'm going to be pissed.
Before you think I'm over-reaching, look at Doom Eternal. It got delayed to later fall into the Digital only.
If Disney really wanted to impress us they should of went with a reboot of Disney Infinity, with both StarWars & Marvel.
Seems like they are taking their time with localizations everywhere. I live in Korea and usually the versions with Korean support come out date and day with the Japanese release, but even here the release is slated for September, and that's most likely without any additional voice-over work.
Well that is unfortunate. Maybe just get the 4th game maybe
I really hope this gives them time to get performance fixed before the localization. I was interested until I saw how the game looked... I'm generally not too bothered by this sort of thing, but launch footage looked really rough for a game with as much empty space as this one.
@tadams587 The difference between Lego Star Wars and Doom Eternal is that the Switch version was the only one to see the extreme delay it received. With Lego Star Wars, all versions have been delayed. If the Switch version comes later than the releases on other systems, I'd understand the concern, but I don't think this is a sign that it will be digital-only on Switch.
Ugh.
I have nothing more to add.
Still waiting for the Yo-kai Watch 1 switch release in the West.
That one has already been localized. /facepalm
@Ryu_Niiyama ohhh, okay thanks.
take your time just make the game great. take all the time you want.
2022 is going to be a very expensive year
Rune Factory 5 is taking a long time to get translated into English because the team working on translation suddenly forgot the English language. It just happened like BAM and the translation team didn't know English anymore and they were all fired and probably kicked out of Japan. It's a sad day for Japanese translation into English uhh stuff.
Sorry, I couldn't think of anything else to joke about. This will just have to do for now. :/
I was hoping it was going to come out this year, but honestly, I’m not that surprised about the delay. It took seven months for Rune Factory 4S to be localised for the West, in spite of the fact that the game was pretty much a 1-to-1 port of the 3DS game and therefore already had the entirety of the text available in English.
With this being an entirely new game, I guess it’s an improvement to get it in the West 8-9 months after the Japanese release…still, Marvelous could have admitted they were running behind a bit earlier than mid-2021. 😝
Still one of the very best 2021 Switch releases, but will trick its way among the best 2022 Switch releases now, too. Well played. 😏 😄
I would have bought it, but the decision to not include gay marriage isn't one I can support. Even Story of Seasons has it, what's this game's excuse?
Well they released Friends of Mineral Town last summer and Pioneers of Olive Town a month ago, so it's not like we're short on farming sims from them for the time being. These types of games are designed to be played for a long time so let's enjoy them until this releases.
A bit too late... A pity, I really want to play this game. Will have to wait.
Ouch that’s a big delay, and we don’t even really know a date either. Jan-March basically, and that’s even if early 2022 holds.
Ah, well. Patience is a virtue. One I lack, but a virtue nonetheless.
They got a whole year to fix the framerate issues, would be lame if they just spent that entire year adding translation instead.
Very excited for this game. Action RPG with dungeons to run around in, hack'n slash combat, big bosses, farming, fishing, voice acting, and new characters to meet...sign me up!
Sure would be nice if they were able to use that time to add in gay marriage. I know it’s not happening though, which is disappointing.
I was excited for this game but when I saw there was no inclusivity in terms of marriage candidates, I'll be spending my money elsewhere. It's strange since Story of Seasons has effectively and properly included same-sex pairings in those games but the same developers & publishers can't be bothered to bring inclusivity and acceptance to the Rune Factory series. Heck, even Friends of Mineral Town which is a remake had this added but a brand new game developed at a time when most of the Western world has fully embraced LGBTQ stories and experiences, it's a major regression to see a game like this just not bother. So if you're also concerned about that, speak with your wallets since that's the language businesses understand the most. Don't buy Rune Factory 5 (or at the very least, purchase it used so the developer sees none of the profit). There will be those who do buy it and fair enough but if you want to see better representation in gaming, don't buy this game. And lets hope Rune Factory 6 finally gets it through their heads to embrace inclusivity!
Xseed translated Story of Seasons into multiple languages concurrent with the Japanese development of the game. They have effectively proven they can do it. And the upcoming game, Akiba’s Trip, already has the full English Text and Voices on the Japanese copies of the game, so… I don’t get the delay if they’ve been translating at time of development. Currently playing the Japanese copy of RF5 and loving it, but it’s still a bummer to wait even longer when it seems the goal has been to shorten localization
XSEED isn’t that big of a company, about 160 people iirc. They’ve had a hand in localizing or publishing ~28 different projects other than RF5 since then, not including rereleases or older games, ports of FoMT or RF4S soon coming to other systems, or DLC or patches of recent games (looking at you, PoOT). Not to mention, they’re having to translate RF5 into several different languages, and if it’s anything like RF4, it’s a massive amount of dialogue to handle. Be gentle and patient. We’ll get the game eventually.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Story of Seasons is developed by a different team. Rune Factory was a creation of Neverland not Marvelous. It's true they revived the franchise from the grave for RF5. However they basically gave the old creator his own studio with his own creative freedom. And he is creating them just like he used to. From my understanding he has refused all input from the SOS team. Complete creative freedom was in the deal for him to come back and develop 5. And this is the guy who fought putting female protagonists in the games until the sales of RF3 tanked. I wouldn't count on any inclusion lol
@Zonned Thanks for the clarification. Well if I were him, in this day in age, it’s just good business (not to mention being a decent human being) to be as inclusive and accepting as possible. But if its his choice to deny representation in his games, it is certainly my right to just not buy his game. It’s a lost sale for me and I’ll stick with Story of Seasons, Stardew Valley, and other games in this genre that choose to have options where I can more fully see myself in these types of games.
@DarthFoxMcCloud The inclusion you speak of in SOS games were modifications made for the US audience. It's possible the long delay is made because Xseed is doing the same thing again. But it was not in the original Japanese version of those games.
You have to realize that culturally speaking Japan is not where America is right now. And I am pretty sure gay marriage has not even been legalized there yet. It's less out of bigotry as it is a cultural thing there. Developers generally don't even consider it unless the US branch puts pressure on them to do so.
