Retro-inspired action platformers don't normally give themselves an extended promotional run-in to release, but perhaps Berserk Boy can pull it off. Though it's not due until Q4 2022 on Switch and various other platforms, it looks particularly good in its initial announcement details.
As you can see in the video above the developer BerserkBoy Games has some fun ideas; as outlined by studio founder Zu Ehtisham in the press release it shoots for the same genre as franchises like Mega Man, Sonic, Pulseman and Gunvolt. You can certainly see various influences in some of the game ideas.
Game features, and confirmation that Tee Lopes (Sonic Mania and various other projects) is working on the soundtrack, are below.
- Change into different Berserk forms: Merge with the five Berserk Force Orbs – Lightning, Fire, Earth, Air, and Ice – and absorb their unique abilities!
- Go Berserk! Chain together combos to fill your Berserk Meter and trigger a form’s special attack! Upgrade and become even more powerful!
- Explore New Hope City and beyond: Jump, dash, slam, and slide through multiple sprawling stages! Find alternate paths and hidden collectibles!
- A modern adventure with a retro feel: Slick and stylish platforming action inspired by a love for the genre greats! Play for big scores and fast times!
- Music by Sonic Mania composer Tee Lopes: Full original soundtrack pumping with high-energy 16-bit nostalgia! Enjoy the beats as you Go Berserk!
It's still some way off, but let us know what you think of this initial look at Berserk Boy.

I'm liking all the influences it's got going, this is one I'm excited for.
As usual, I want this physical!
The game looks great but Q4 2022 switch release date? That’s a little absurd to show off a game that looks pretty much completed. Not like we’re looking at at a 100+ hour game that needs multiple years in development but waiting another 18 or so months for this is ridiculous. I’ll get it on Steam first.
Reminds me of Copen's gameplay in the last couple Gunvolt games. Hopefully this turns out well!
@nymbosox maybe it's not as complete as it looks...anyway, it may take time for indie developers to finish a project.
I find their use of over-sized eyebrows....pleasing.
NINJA APPROVED
@Whitestrider
For the length of the trailer, I would think It’s near complete. This is too much of a tease to be that far from completion. They should have waited until the indie showcase next year at E3 to show this off. The last time I got super excited for a mega man style game was Mighty No. 9 and we all know the tragic ending to that story. I’ll wait until it drops and read reviews or get it on steam and get my refund if indeed it does suck.
It looks fun, but... filtered pixel art breaks my art.
@gojiguy Then get out ya old fart...
Just kidding, I saw this trailer and I thought it was related to that Sega Monster Boy game but apparently isn't.
@nymbosox - I wouldn't say that.
In the trailer I only saw 3 biomes. Unless there is three levels entirely, willing to bet a tail end development is happening right now.
Always good to see retro-inspired projects coming along as that's what I'm most interested in. This looks like it could be quite good. I was reminded of Shovel Knight's Spectre Knight pack and Cuphead when I saw the dashing/charging mehanics. I would just add, in case the developer sees this, that I think it is a good idea to make the screen shake optional. Screen shake in modern games is very uncomfortable to my senses — the 3DS' 3D effect also bothers me — and I'm far less likely to consider games that have it or have no way to turn it off, and I know others who have the same issue. There are other ways to communicate impact without that effect.
This actually looks good. I'll keep an eye out.
Now THIS is what I expect when I hear a new game uses pixel art.
