Road 96, a new narrative game from award-winning French indie studio DigixArt, has been announced for Nintendo Switch.
Opening up today's Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Road 96 has you trying to escape from a country on the brink of collapse. Your goal is to reach the border, thousands of miles away from your starting location, and you'll have "dozens" of choices to make as you forge your own path to get there.
The trailer shows off an intriguing cast of characters, as well as an interesting set of decisions to be made on your part. All of these decisions are said to alter your experience, sometimes closing options, sometimes opening them; every playthrough is procedurally generated, so you can always jump back in for a new run to see different storylines.
"We think Switch is the perfect platform to enjoy Road 96, literally 'on the road', in your backpack, anywhere," says creative director, Yoan Fanise. "The colourful landscapes and characters of Petria become even more impactful when you discover them in your hands. It’s a pleasure to have brands such as Nintendo and HP’s OMEN helping us with our little indie game."
Road 96 drives on to the Switch eShop later this year. Let us know if you're planning on taking it for a spin with a carefully chosen comment below.

Not 100% sold on it yet but it's an interesting concept at the very least. If it turns out well then I'm down.
On the radar as a maybe
It looks like it could have potential. I'll keep an eye on this one.
^^^same. Seems unique. Not sure about the procedurally generated stuff tho
@neogyo
I can't stand procedurally generated games normally but this looks like an instance where it will work because it is about telling a story rather than fighting hordes of enemies or the like.
Will keep my eye on this.
the idea of it has caught my interest, not sure if i will end up getting it though
@TheFullAndy that’s a good point!..
I am curious. Will await more information. Or a demo.
Made me think of the Choose Your Own Adventure books I grew up reading.
I don't know how this falls into "procedural generation".
It looked as though the characters you encounter, and the segments encountered are all pre-fabricated because of things like voice acting.
What I'm really seeing is just a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book with an absurd number of branching paths. The fact that they give you an exact number of 148,268 possible routes means its deterministic, which is anything but procedural.
I'm really intrigued by this and the story. I love a good travel game. I don't even know what it means by procedurally generated, but whatever it is, it looks like fun.
the procedurally generated may mean different roads can get stitched together in any order, but if there is a finite number, then that is not procedurally generated
Looks interesting but need reviews. Will be wishlisted for monitoring purposes.
This is one of the few games that caught my eye at the direct, the other ones being Aztech and the new games from Annapurna. Hope it turns out good.
