Back in 2018, there was mention of the Game Boy-inspired adventure Save Me Mr Tako: Tasukete Tako-San getting a physical release if there was enough interest.
It's been a bumpy ride since then - with the game even delisted on the eShop, but now, it's bounced back.
The new Definitive Edition will be receiving a Limited Run Games physical release on consoles. More details about the new digital release will also be revealed later down the line.
In a separate blog post, the game's developer Christophe Galati revealed the definitive version of the game would arrive digitally on 5th March:
"I waited a long time to get the game patched and I can’t wait for you to experience the game in all its glory in this Definitive Edition."
Unfortunately, if you've already got a copy of the original game - you'll still have to buy this new version again because of the publisher swap:
"Last year for the game's two year anniversary I announced that I had parted away with my former publisher Nicalis, resulting in the game being removed from the stores (Steam and Nintendo eShop). Because the game was delisted and is now under a new publisher, we are unable to patch the existing game and instead need to deliver it as a new title. Unfortunately this means anyone who previously purchased the original game will still have to purchase this new version to enjoy all the new content. I contacted both Valve and Nintendo to see if I could do a special discount for players with the original version in their library but unfortunately it’s impossible."
So, there you go - Mr Tako is finally getting a physical release. Will you be buying this game again, or trying it out for the first time? Leave a comment down below.

I won't purchase the same game twice without a discount, specially considering it's releasing on the same platform.
Nicalis screwed me over with Ittle Dew 2 and now with this. Ugh. I won’t be buying this again unless there is a massive sale. So disappointed he couldn’t do a discount for people that gave him their money the first time.
NBA Playgrounds and Uno have both been removed and relisted, with those who own the previous versions able to download the new version for free. I don't see why the same can't be true of this.
Hmmm. Maybe it's because the original is delisted, but normally that sort of discount is possible. There have been numerous indie games that have given me discounts or even free games automatically based on whether or not I had purchased one or more of their other games.
Once again why I hate digital.
The game was good but I'm not buying it twice. Oh well.
@Zach - Likely legal reasons. I mean, Nicalis does have a rap sheet a mile long for a reason.
At least the developer is being forthright, and I have no reason to doubt the sincerity of his intentions. It's a shame that current owners won't be entitled to a discount, but there will be discounts eventually.
This is a game I have only peeked at in passing. With a physical edition in the works, I might as well bite.
@Zach
I'm guessing the new versions of those games have the same publisher which make it possible.
For what it’s worth, I really enjoyed (and beat) the original version.
It’s GREAT. The story is ambitious, some of the levels (especially the water dungeon) are super complex and I appreciated that the creator was on message boards when people got stuck in the original release.
While I’m annoyed to double dip, I’m really glad this game is getting a second shot. I may even double dip.
Chris is a really sweet guy! I had a short but friendly email exchange with him a couple of years ago to ask if the version of his game on the Japanese eShop could be updated to include other translations. I like to play games in both Japanese and English, so it bums me out whenever there is only one language option available. He said he too wished the game could include every translation available but the decision was ultimately his publisher's. Still, he promised to raise the issue with them again. Although I hate the idea of double dipping, if purchasing the definitive edition means I can finally replay the game in English, I'll be happy to support him and his new publisher. I can vouch from personal experience that he cares about the people who play his games.
I will NEVER buy another game made by this developer.
@jobvd this feels like an odd hill to die on. i think it's pretty clear he tried his best here (it was evidently more on the publisher/the storefront's shoulders than his) ; if you blame anyone blame nicalis for boning over the patches to the original game in the first place
it's sad because i understand that the trouble around the release of this game isn't in any way the fault of the developer but i won't be re-buying this at all. paid full price for the original on launch day and put the game down due to some of the issues i imagine the patch is made to address. i'm looking forward to christophe's next game (which is looking lovely) but just feeling very burnt by this
I really wanted to like Save Me Mr. Tako, but it was so buggy in sometimes bizarre ways. I still managed to beat it, but saying it was painful and frustrating understates things a little. It does look like this new version fixes a lot of the complaints I have.
@AG_Awesome What like no other developer ever has done ever.
@somebread yeah but the game wasn't good either
This is a worthy release. For everyone crying about it, just don't buy it, it's really that simple. Ever single LR release has previously appeared on a console before and usually as a digital, that's the exact point. Why is everyone suddenly feeling cheated by this tiny one man outfit???
@YANDMAN Lol. Why dont you go worry about yourself and stop crying about people who got screwed out of their money by Nicalis? The dev made updates years ago and Nicalis refused to implement them. Some of us aren’t okay with that unethical behavior. Anyway, move on and get over other peoples issues if you can’t handle reading them without getting so triggered. It’ll make life a lot easier for you ☺️☺️
@YANDMAN people are complaining because they bought the digital original release and are not getting the digital release for free, nothing to do with LRG
This is why I wait with indies before purchase, there is always a definitive edition on the horizon
@AG_Awesome Chill
@MatoFilipovic Always 😎
I was wondering about this game just yesterday, and cool that LRG are helping to bring it back.
I was enjoying it but the game dragged out pretty long, and I lost track of how to progress the story because of its unusual structure. I'd enjoy starting it over though with fixes in place.
I was excited for this when it first came out, but didn't particularly care for it after playing. I'm interested in what this definitive version offers though.
@jobvd Blame the publisher, not the developer.
I'm glad this game was able to get a better publisher. Screw Nicalis. They've schemed their way to taking developers any freedom and then drop them in a second for the next big thing.
@KimBread The post detailing the biggest changes to this game is linked in the article, but here it is for your convenience: https://www.patreon.com/posts/save-me-mr-tako-49651619
There are quite a few significant changes including new, easier modes, and a more pleasant camera system, Definitely worth a read to see just how big a change it is. I am glad to hear this developer is taking back his game. Nicalis seems best avoided. I understand the frustration of those who bought the original. I almost did, but waited to see if the game would be updated to fix some problems, so I was lucky to have waited since there's this new version.
I feel like this article should have revisited the relating details of this prior one for deeper context:

@sdelfin Thanks for pointing that out to me. I misread the article, thinking the details were coming later.
Gotta say I'm very impressed with all the TLC put into this game. Mr. Galati seems like a passionate guy and I hope the game sells well.
@somebread Yeah I realise that. Why should people get a digital release for free?
@YANDMAN LMFAO. 🤣😂
