In the race for "best farming game of March 2021", there's still everything to play for. Harvest Moon: One World came out earlier this week, and Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town has a release date of 23rd/26th March depending on whether you're in North America or Europe/Australia, and we've been reporting on the battle all along - from which one has the cutest pre-order plush, to finding out that Story of Seasons will include same-sex marriage, but Harvest Moon won't.
There are many metrics that might sway you, most of which we will eventually cover in our reviews of both, but for now, there's this video by Adam Roffel, which shows the first thirty minutes of both games at the same time.
Is the first thirty minutes of a game representative of its whole? Probably not, but at least you can compare and contrast the art and the characters.
For example, Story of Seasons doesn't have character portraits, making it hard to determine the emotions of people you're talking to, but Harvest Moon has animated emotions during their more visual novel-style dialogue. On the other hand, Harvest Moon's graphics are a little less pretty than Story of Seasons' looks.
Hopefully, this video will help you a little more to make your choice between the two - or decide to sack them both off altogether.
Have you chosen a side yet, or are you waiting on reviews and more information? Tell us about your opinions so far in the comments below.

Story of Seasons all the way!! Harvest Moon hasn't been good sins the Wii which is sad because I used to be so loyal them. There a shell of there former self's.
I think i will consider both of them.
I saw something from One World.

Story of Seasons IS Harvest Moon and Harvest Moon after 2013 is NOT Harvest Moon, you can read about a brief summary on Story of Season's Wikipedia article.

Why do these games look so....dated?
I mean, I understand that they are going for a cartoonish look, but given the system's that these games are releasing, they don't have to look like up-res'ed 3DS titles.
@Zio_Ziodyne Thanks for the info, I knew about this that's why they have never felt the same for so long.
@GamingFan4Lyf I skimmed the videos and don't really see what you're saying. Compared to other Switch games they look completely on par. Absolutely nothing special, but then they never were in the graphics department. Looks comparable to Animal Crossing, not as good, but comparable.
Honestly neither of them, which is a real shame as I love the BokuMon games and this Harvest Moon shows they’re coming close at least. I’ll just be waiting for Rune Factory 5.
Will the real Harvest Moon please stand up.
With that said I won't be playing neither, I have Stardew Valley for my farming Sim fix.
One World is quite comforting, easy going. I'm about 10 hours in and I've enjoyed most that time with it. Though it does involve a lot of walking on long empty corridors of land. I did unlock quick travel now though so that should help.
I obviously haven't played PoOT yet, but I do plan to give that a try as well. Eventually!
Both looks like garbage, I'll just wait for Rune Factory 5.
Give it a rest, you lot. How long are you gonna be pissed at Natsume? I haven't cared for any of their post schism HM games but gave One World a try. It's pretty good, much better than I expected from them.
I'm waiting on PoOT til I see what changes they are making. 3oT spoiled us as far as character interactions and game immursion go. I really want it to become the game they are capable of making and the game it should be.
I'm not crazy about the art design trends both have taken, but it happens. Anyone remember the pooh hitting the fan after Windwaker's art was released??
@k8sMum I feel like a juvenile for laughing at 'waiting on PoOT'....
Stardew even though it's been out sometime is the best farming sim of 2021, it's amazing how one man can do a much better job than these two companies! It's like they aren't even trying any more or just don't give a damn!
@arekdougy No laughing matter man. I was waiting on PoOT once, longest three days of my life.
These games look awful. No thanks
I'm probably still going to get SoS. I don't like how HM still looks like a knockoff mobile game. Stardew I has loads of content, and I like playing it, but I don't like pixel art all that much. FoMT was a little disappointing for me because I didn't realize it was literally just a port of a 20 year old game, but PoOT looks so much better to me.
@arekdougy
I'm here all week. Tip your waitress.
Seems like the Harvest Moon games are slowly getting better, some of the previous ones looked much worse than this.
Awww, I don't want to watch a video, I want to read. Humph. Can you just tell me what to buy? Hehe
Story of seasons for me. I’ve gone into it blind after seeing info about it after the last Nintendo direct. And I was won over by the buffalo plush
This is a very easy decision to make; either a game made by a soulless company, a game made by a different slightly less soulless company, or a game made by a passionate man. The winner is clearly Stardew Valley.
The fact alone that these two games both have expansion passes; meanwhile Stardew Valley just released nearly a full game of new content as a free update. One is clearly a work of passion; the others are just a means to make money.
