This Friday sees the launch of Monster Hunter Rise on Nintendo Switch, and while getting the day off to dive headfirst into its juicy gameplay is just a pipedream for most of us, some lucky folk over in Japan are being treated to a special holiday by their CEO.
Masaki Hiyama, CEO of VR developer, Mark-on, has issued a vacation notice to all staff other than executives informing them that they can take Friday 26th March off work to go and enjoy the game (thanks, VGC). Hiyama has called the freebie vacation 'MonHun Day', and has shared the notice sent to staff online:
Speaking to the Huffington Post Japan, Hiyama has explained the reasoning behind the kind gesture:
"There were several employees who said they wanted to take the day off on the 26th because they wanted to play MonHun immediately, so we took the plunge and did this. We received words of thanks and appreciation from employees for giving them this day off."
If you're on your boss' good side, perhaps you should suggest that your workplace adopts a similar approach for some upcoming game launches? More of this please, CEOs!

That’s wholesome, cool to see CEOs being understanding.
Unfortunately, my job is too essential for us to just take off for games. It would start a scandal.
What an amazing CEO
I took the day off today and played shmups. Although I wasn't given permission.
Just to be clear, it's not something I make a habit of doing.
Kudos to them for basic human decency.
Imagine they did that in UK, play FIFA or COD.
Rather go to work
Alternative title:
"Japanese CEO wants to play Monster Hunter Rise so is getting rid of all annoying employees for the day"
Why would anyone want to spend their day off playing the same game they've been making over and over since 2004.
@eltomo
I would rather play Fifa or CoD than Monster Hunter as the games bore me to tears but I don't feel the need to tell everyone about it.
@GrandScribe I wouldn't call this basic human decency....
That’s great paid time off I hope!
Think I might do the same!
It's like the last day of school, just sounds like nobody was going to be there anyway.
At least he gets to take the credit for it?
Best boss ever. More bosses should have a day off of work to see new Star Wars movies also.
Nice, my spring break will be my monster hunting week too.
Good stuff from that CEO meanwhile Activision are giving some of theirs the rest of their lives off
@Kimyonaakuma I'm sure the majority were not going to take the day off even if they wanted to play the game
@carlos82 and so is Sony Playstation & Blizzard...
I remember me and and old friend of mine did this too, we took 2 days of from work when Final Fantasy 14 released just so we could keep playing it nonstop.
Monster hunter is the new dragon quest. They should just give kids a day off from school when a new one launches.
@DaYdReAmEr86 That's about 99% of AAA games these days. Only some don't go quite as far back and some go back further.
@TheFullAndy to be fair, I haven't into Monster Hunter.
While I could see my manager supporting this, I doubt his higher-ups would. XD
Reminds me when, growing up, a school district near my own would take off the first Friday of shotgun season. The reason being that so many parents would call in their kids sick, some of the older ones wouldn't show, or some of the teachers would take a personal day lol. The tradeoff was they had one less day of Christmas break.
Seriously, this should give you an idea of how popular this franchise is over in Japan and why all of the western fans (myself included) love this game as well. I would love to have this Friday off just to play this game, but alas... I have responsibilities and Children and work :/
@eltomo
That is fair enough but bear in mind people who enjoy playing Fifa or CoD aren't all heathens and can enjoy the likes of Mario, Zelda and Hollow Knight as well!
This is not uncommon. Most "sararīman" will get a few days off a year around big events and game releases.
But keep in mind they also work what adds up to a few extra days a year when the are off at 5pm but it's a unforgivable social faux pas to leave before your boss, who decides to work until 7.
And I mean now I've missed the train, and the next connection at the station isn't for a few hours, so I might as well stay until 9.
And now I'm not going to be home until 11 anyways, and I have to leave again at 6:30, and honestly, the new carpet is pretty comfortable ...
Everything in life is a give and take. The grass is always greener and all that.
now thats how you treat the staff
A Monster Hunter release day should be a world wide holiday anyway.
If I had a boss who forced me to celebrate ZelDay, I'd work my butt off to compensate 10 times over.
The CEO knows, he's probably happy to make an excuse to get some hunting done himself too!
Now that's how you run a company effectively.
I wonder if this would fly with my boss! 😂
This ceo is a lot better than Activision x Blizard ceo who earns 200 million dollar while the company laid off its employees
and they give a 200$ Battle net card
I gave it an honest shot but like previous MH games, this just isn't for me. At all...
