Mario purge day is coming, and to add to the list of things getting taken down at the end of this month, we've got the Nintendo published 3DS title Disney Art Academy, which will be discontinued on 30th March.
Nintendo's Japanese customer support shared this information on Twitter. Any user who has access to a digital copy will still be able to download the title from the 3DS eShop after this date. Here's the Google translation of the below tweet:
"The download version of the Nintendo 3DS software "Disney Art Academy" will be discontinued on March 30, 2021 (Tuesday) at 23:59."
This appears to apply to other regions as well - with the game page in the UK displaying the following message:
"From 23:59 (UK time) on 30th March, 2021, Disney Art Academy for Nintendo 3DS family systems will no longer be available on Nintendo eShop."
Mickey's departure on 30th March lines up with Mario's own increasingly depressing day. As previously noted, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be pulled at the end of this month alongside Super Mario Bros. 35 and the Super Mario Game & Watch.
In addition to this, Netflix is removing an old Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon series, Nintendo's original Super Mario Maker online services are shutting down, and other games like Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light will no longer be available to purchase.
Nintendo of America also issued a reminder earlier on to grab the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection before it's gone.

Hmm need to get a eshop card.
Edit: just bought the physical. I needed a few books anyway.
Another one bites the dust
Might have to download this then, to avoid never being able to in the future
I think I'll survive
Managed to get 3D All Stars and that anniversary FE game, so we're all good. But it does seem like a lot of games are being taken down on that day.
Guessing this is because of the license expiring?
@Noid probably.
Well at least the cartridge version is cheap and easy to find so no loss here if you hadn't bought it yet.
Must be licensing related. Still, yet another black mark for the end of March.
@Noid Probably mistook Mickey for Mario. They both start with M.
On topic, sucks do much is being removed and people still say all digital should be the future. Least with the Mario stuff the millions upon millions of its physical release for 3D all-stars will likely mean it'll never go rare.
@XenoShaun This one's okay, you can still find a Disney Art Academy cartridge easily.
If you're interested, you might wanna buy the WiiU art academy game, as that one has no physical edition IIRC.
Thanks for the 87th reminder that Nintendo is removing every thing related to Mario from every platform, our personal collection and our memories, because they are evil...and anti-consumer...and did I mention evil!
@Chlocean Thanks for the tip. Still need to get round to fixing my broken gamepad for that thing (broken left joystick, common problem but am inept with solders haha).
I'll be sure to nab it, especially seems no news on a fresh one for Switch.
Seeing a picture of Mickey gave me hope that a Disney related game was coming to the Switch.. The console seems to be barren of good Disney games. No Kingdom Hearts (except for that rhythm based one), no Disney Afternoon collection (even though I owned most of them on the NES back when they first released).. but no, it is just because a Disney game is being removed from the 3DS eshop.
Mickey decided to host a way more fun Mickey-ocalpyse a day prior to the dreaded Mariocalypse, whose details you can find on the more brightly coloured flyer.
Oh maybe I should bu-
(it's 45 USD converted to my local currency)
It will be missed but not forgotten.
It it stupid to announce a digital games removal so close to the actual removal date. They should push it to the end of april.
Looks like Netflix already dropped the Super Mario Bros. 3 Show ahead of the 31st date :-/
Sadly no uncommon bummer for licensed properties (Project X Zone is said to have bitten the dust after a single music track license ran out), but more perplexing is the timing. I don't know if it's a ridiculously short notice on the publisher's own part or NL missing out until now yet again (Rodea morbidly waves from the back rows), but... ONE WEEK? Sure puts the recurrently epitaphized Mario and Fire Emblem offerings into perspective - despite a much shorter digital shelf life overall, they have had their availability deadlines communicated in neon letters more than half a year away. 6+ months to squeeze ~5000 rubles or an analogous sum into one's budget, Carl.
This one is half that sum and not likely to go on sale in the short time it has left. FWIW, I still happen to have the required amount sitting right on my account, but finding myself at FOMO's shotgun point to abruptly spend it on a digital art trainer instead of the plans I've had... Despite the Disney theme I'm certainly a sucker for, "forgive me if I withhold my enthusiasm". Nowhere to be seen in Belarusian retail or second hand at the moment either. And here I had a smug morale boost after just adding another 3DS exclusive (Final Fantasy Explorers) to my collection last night.😆
All first world problems here, sure, but really now. Sad as the oft-discussed first party items' limited availability may be, it still comes with one upside the rest of the industry (and the mass media covering it) could definitely learn from.
Ah yes. Because of ANYONE needs more money it’s DISNEY. Why?!
Just imagine if all this is just one massive collaborative April fool's joke.
Why are those Fire Emblem games being removed? I don't remember hearing about that.
Edit: I've looked it up. The FE thing is just that single 8-bit game that was digital only. Not bothered.
I've had Mickey's Art Academy in my physical collection for yonks, so shame on yall for not 😛
@XenoShaun Physical will never die although it'll shrink, there's a whole culture around collecting and even if 90% of people were digital the collectors market would still be worth hundreds of millions.
The digital future people are dillusional imo.
I nearly got this a couple of years ago as the kids were into the regular art academy. Looked ok. Not too fussed that it's no longer available.
Seems like an odd game to remove from the eshop
I can't believe you didn't go with "taking the Mickey".
I really thought I'd be the first person to make a Super Mickey Bros. 35 related joke.
Super Mickey 3D All Stars? Anybody?
@Chlocean Are you sure about that? I own a physical copy of the Wii U Art Academy game.
@FlashmanHarry Ah, yes upon research. There was a PAL version released. I live in North America, for which there is no physical version.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
@Nintendzoey
Yeah the Disney Afternoon collection still stings. There is no reason at all not to put them on the Nintendo console since they are games from a Nintendo console to begin with. I also still can't believe that Square Enix hasn't ported the Kingdom Hearts collections. They would sell a ton.
I hope Nintendo has a direct planned for the 31st or the 1st. I expect they will drop something big.
@Chlocean that would make sense. Considering I'm in Ireland.
@tadams587 At least it's better than back then when they didn't say anything or poorly publicized the news. Like many games in the past. Licensed games on the Wii Shop, Scott Pilgrim, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3 on 360, many R-Type games on all platforms, the 2 TG-16 Image Fight games on WiiU that were barely on there for 2 years, Project X Zone on 360, etc. just up and gone.
NOOOO NOT MICKEY TOO!
@GamerGrandpa Yes, I would buy any of those games if they were released on the Switch. Talking about Kingdom Hearts, I am more of a handheld kind of person. I like to play games on the go, not connected to the TV, which is why I am thankful for the Switch. The only Kingdom Heart games I have played were the DS / 3DS games or the one released for the PS Vita. I enjoyed them all though.
Don't buy it if you don't want it.
Marth, Mario, Mickey... No M-names are safe!
Aw, that stinks.
I've actually been revisiting Disney Art Academy this month. I just finished the Tinkerbell advanced lesson earlier today.
It's really nice. If you're interested in this sort of thing, I'd certainly recommend picking it up while you still can.
We still have Disney Magical World and its sequel.
