Mii representation hasn't exactly been Nintendo's top priority during the Switch generation, but it looks like things could be changing based on the latest Direct broadcast.
Apart from featuring in the upcoming title Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mii will also be making a comeback in Miitopia for the Nintendo Switch. Yes, although it wasn't really mentioned, the original 3DS title from 2017 is returning.
This new version includes "expanded customisation" including wigs and make-up, to make your Mii characters look more fabulous than ever. You'll also be able to have a horse as an ally that'll lend a hoof in battle.
Miitopia launches on the Switch on 21st May and pre-orders are now available on the Switch eShop.

l think tomodachi life will come to switch too or tomodachi life 2
Ahh yes... Nintendo is starting to run out of Wii U games, so start porting from the other console out at the time...
The Switch is just gonna be a port machine for Nintendo's best games from last generation isn't it?
My first reaction from Direct was " Oh, WOW ! MIITOPIAAA...!!! " 😃😃😃
Nice, a Mii RPG remastered, I'm surprise they didn't do this sooner.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi cough
I missed this one on 3DS. Definitely interested in giving this a go!
Would also love a Tomodachi Life game for Switch (I confess that I spent a stupid number of hours playing that silly game)!
I’m surprised it’s $50 - it seems like a mini game?
@HotGoomba Poor Goomba, the Covid-19 got him. Do learn to wear a mask like yours truly.
@MS7000 yeah, I wish this was a new game with different adventures. How lazy can u be?
tomodachi life next plz. loved the demo on the 3ds I ended up getting tomodachi life in favor of miitopia.
@iNintendo there has to be some extra stuff, right right?
@thehoppypoppy I enjoyed it. Might play it again, but it's not worth a double dip
@MS7000
Well, why not ?
The port was not even straight 100% from 3DS.
There were some new elements added.
I'm not even looking for AAA games like most peoples waiting for.
This Miitopia and other Remastered are already satisfying enough.
Man was that direct disappointing.
@iNintendo it’s actually really quite long. I played, thought I’d reached a satisfying end point, then discovered I was only halfway through!
Who ask for this ? Like serious it’s full price that’s questionable.
Its probably not a high budget game but something like a F-Zero Gx or a Eternal Darkness remaster wouldn’t cost that much more and would sell and be worth 1000 times more.
sighs
Was really hoping Tomodachi Life would come to Switch, HD version, sequel...or...something.
@Anti-Matter Better question, why not just make a full-blown sequel if they are adding new stuff? Give me an actual reason to want to play the game again.
@Duboiss If you never played Miitopia before, then I'd say it's worth a shot. It's unironically a really good game.
Also, I personally don't know If I want to buy this.. since it just seems as if they're adding two new things and upping the price. I would've preferred a sequel, but if they added more to it than just horses and makeup, then I'll probably consider it.
@MS7000
I do really wish for that too but Nintendo have decided to remaster the 3DS one so... There is nothing i can do. Complaining will not change the fact.
Not bad remaster choice though, still i want to get Miitopia HD.
@VoidofLight Demo on 3ds was alright but the switch version is gonna be 80$ Here in Canada and I feel this should be 20$ max ... like this barely has the same amount of work as a Xenoblade or Mario.
Nintendo are greedy cause switch is selling.
@Joeynator3000
I want that muscular boxer outfits from Miitomo for Mii games on Switch.
Miitomo has been removed long time ago. 😫
@iNintendo for once a Nintendo game on switch that ISN'T 60 dollars
This is hands-down my favorite game of all time. Super excited to replay it on switch.
It wasn’t a bad game per se, just didn’t quite nail anything other than the great sense of humour. The mechanics aren’t exactly deep. Not worth full price.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi lmao
@MS7000 I think their strategy is to try and bring in that nostalgia from older generations to newer generations, similar to many other companies (cough)disney remakes(cough)
But hey I guess I'm not complaining
I was looking forward to seeing this or Tomodachi Life. I hope there's some more new content under the hood. This is retailing for AU$10 more than the 3DS installment at full price, oddly enough.
This was perhaps ironically my favourite announcement from the Direct. I played the 3DS original almost to death and I look forward to doing it all over again, now in HD (though losing the 3D stings a bit at times).
Genuine question because I never played it, I thought Miitopia (and a couple other similar games on 3DS) really thrived because of the really awesome spot pass feature on 3DS which let you “meet” Mii’s that you passed by in the real world? To be more direct with my question, if the game idea lives and dies on you “meeting Mii’s” how do you recreate that if we’re not out and about and interacting with humans and on a system that isn’t explicitly a handheld?
So what is it with the resurrection of Miis? Happy as I am to see this, if Mii Maker remains in the settings, no one will use it. Revamp it, chuck it next to NSO/settings button on the home screen, chuck some fancy music and a plaza, and you got yourself a great little app
@Ks123 : I can't seem to recall StreetPass support on Miitopia. The 3DS game utilised SpotPass where it connects to the internet to give you a random assortment of Miis to assign to your Miitopia cast, so I imagine that it will function in more or less the same fashion here.
I reset my game and opted to play with the internet turned off though, at least at the beginning, as I was immediately greeted with SpongeBob and celebrity Miis, which was really jarring. I just wanted to play the game as the developers intended, without my game turning into a meme fest.
@auck Oh I get the strategy they are going for. But as a fan, the strategy affects me negatively due to lack of new games, so I can't help but disapprove every time I see it in action.
@auck poor bird has Covid-19. Please wear a mask kids. And shut up Anti-Maskers.
swell, swell game. not worth $50 in any world
There, now you can add your Smash Wish Picks to this and rejoice.
@Duboiss
"Who ask for this ?"
Me, of course because i like Mii games.
@Silly_G sorry I meant Streetpass obviously and not Spotpass, sorry about that. And thanks for clearing that up, I thought there was a really big Mii component dealing with interacting with people you meet in real life. Sounds like I totally misunderstood what Miitopia was supposed to be about all these days. Lol
@Silly_G
Last time i found Spongebob, Donald Trump Mii on my Miitopia 3DS for Quest help.
I really wanted to get this for the 3DS, but never got around to it. I'll probably wind up picking this up for the Switch.
If they're going to start porting over from the 3DS, I'd like to see "A Link Between Worlds." It's a great Zelda game that would be a nice release for the anniversary year.
A surprise to see this announced, but a very pleasant one honestly. Miitopia is one of those games that ended up being better then it has any right to be. I am going to wait and see if the added content is worth it before pursuing this game after release.
I hope they add more story to it because I beat the game 100% ( at the beginning of quarantine I was stuck with family with wii sports and miitopia as my only games) and I always wanted more. Literally just restarted it not that long ago so I'd love to play it again on switch, especially if there's more to it this time.
So, it's a port, right? But with extra stuff?
Nintendo everything showed the box art. so yeah physical copy. this looks like such a fun game. glad miis are back. now if we could get a miis sport resort 2!
I wish they did Tomadatchi Life too.
Unexpected, but a welcome one for sure.
Looks to be Nintendo's first 3DS remaster on Switch.
Glad to see a post-Switch late 3DS game finally get a real chance on the market. Surprised this landed on Switch before a Tomodachi Life game, but they both fall in the same universe anyways so I guess it doesn't matter.
Yes!!!! Miitopia, Zelda Skyward(10 years old) and both games already exists... We will be sooooo happy to pay the full price !(Sarcasm) Miitopia or Zelda porting to the Switch is maybe 20% max of the developing costs, but Nintendo will still ask the full price!!
Its not legal... but those guys do a better job... :
Look at the modders CEMU/Citra (Wii/Switch/3DS emulator), they tweaked the best games already to 4k... Like Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time 3DS version etc....
OH YEAH SEARCH FOR BREATH OF THE WILD 'VR' on YOUTUBE . VR MOD FOR YOUR OCULUS QUEST OR STEAM VR
Nintendo!! Dont become Apple!! Plzzz...
Not even showing new footage of BOF 2?? And for 100% Skyward will be the full Nintendo Price instead of making a Zelda-All Stars(Mario All Stars) like Zelda 64, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword for 60 bucks in 1 package... Shame on you!!
Modderz does what Nintendon't
$50 for an old 3ds port. How high are the suits at Nintendo?
I want Zelda-All Stars: Zelda Ocarina of Time N64, Twilight Princess GC and Skyward Sword WII... But Nintendon't gives a shiat ....
@Mr_Persona
Would love Tomodachi Life as well
@thehoppypoppy
This one is silly fun too
@iNintendo
It sold more than a million units on 3DS in less than 3 years
I usually double dip when games get ported to Switch, but I’m perfectly fine playing this one on 3DS. It was fun and funny while it lasted but I can’t see myself ever wanting to play it again. I am happy to see Miis get some recognition, though, between this game and the story mode in Mario Golf.
@Snatcher
They are both great!
I too prefer Tomodachi though
@Joeynator3000
I think there is hope now that we have this release.
Miitopia sold more than a Mil, but Tomodachi sold more than 6 Mil
@westman98
They are both Mii, but I prefer Tomodachi so hoping that makes it too
@Entrr_username
Me too
@Debo626
I really thought that was going to be announced, but Skyward Sword took the spotlight
Not the 3DS game port I was hoping for.
I am passing on this, but it's a cool game and sorta glad it is coming so others can play it. I wish they made a new one tho.
I am so glad they’re showing love to miis again! Would have preferred tomodachi life but still hyped for miitopia.
Give us Fantasy Life!
Miitopia was amazing on 3DS! That's why I was disappointed that this was a port and not a sequel. Sorry, no double dipping just for a horse and some wigs. Hit me up with Miitopia 2 tho Ninty.
If the Switch somehow had backward compatibility with previous systems (a standard for a couple generations), there would functionally only be a handful of new games each year.
@stinky_t
I was thinking the same thing! Like seriously just put it in main menu and boom, got yourself new material. Especially since miitopia and mario golf had a lot of focus on miis again.
Add more hair and face options too.
@Mr_Persona Why Tomodachi 2?
They can simply port the first one.
Port... port everything!
It was an fun little game so excited to see it be ported over. However do hope they also port over some of the other 3ds games like for example kid icarus uprising. Seeing that in HD would be awesome
They should've bundled in Tomodachi Life. 50 bucks is crazy!!
Also, BRING BACK MIIVERSE!!!!!
It's overpriced, yeah, but people saying that a +40 hours RPG should be free are so stupid lmao. II'll wait for a sequel of either Miitopia or Tomodachi.
Lame. Not the 3DS game that should have been ported. Also, it's overpriced to death.
Overpriced for sure
@Nin10doh Made by Level-5, and from my understanding, they have scaled back their plans for releasing outside of Japan, so I can't see that happening. Heck, I think the game got a sequel in the form of a mobile game.
Fantasy Life was really good though. I still need to finish becoming God in a few of the "lifes" on that game.
Surprisingly bizarre choice.
I've played through the whole game, which was diverting enough, but ultimately it felt a bit like another one of the Streetpass games (oh Streetpass, I genuinely miss you so), just a bit longer.
There are no end of 3DS games I'd rather see. But I'll never have time to play all the games I want to anyway, so I won't worry about it too much when things I released I'm not bothered about...
Nice to see it get a second wind, it's very fun and charming! But yeah I would have liked to have seen a sequel if they're adding a bunch of stuff.
Feels almost like they were making a sequel and then Nintendo needed something to put out so made them add all the new elements to a port of the original?
Now if we're giving obscure 3DS titles a new lease of life can we get some love for Ever Oasis on Switch please Nintendo?
not sure if ill double dip, but im really happy theyre giving this mii game a chance again, i was worried nintendo wanted to abandon them. i really hope it leads to stuff like sequels or a tomodachi life remake too
So a streetpass game is going to be $50? Wow...no thanks. I might be confused on that, since I remember a streetpass game like this, but then I think they further refined it or whatever and made a more involved game, can't recall. Oh well, just saying, not my cup of tea.
Earlier: This looks interesting I never played the original!
Sees price: ... NEXT!
@dronesplitter It's not a streetpass game it's a a full title originally sold on cartridge and actually has no streetpass functionality.
I dunno how to feel about this, totally on the fence about getting it.
I already own the original and I admit it is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. However it's a complete downer that this looks like a straight up HD port with some facial features and a horse (what the hell?) thrown in. I was really hyped there would be a sequel where it would be more open world, less linear, some life simulation elements from Tomodachi Life, and new story overall.
Ah well, might still get it. But here's hoping they actually bring out a full on sequel to Tomodachi Life...
@Anti-Matter
You're too easy to please. Things like this shouldn't be the big announcements, there should be more, like some new actual first party software, some of which allegedly exist but we hear nothing on.
@Jakiboy
Your last line here in lies the problem of Ninty's choices regarding ports as of late.
They know people will double dip or likely too partly due to no new first party and the want for 'new' games.
This is pretty inexcusable especially at it's price point. It should have been a sequel, no question about it. It's outright lazy, money grabbing tomfoolery to port a 3ds game and charge this much for it.
Shocking from Nintendo. It is this kind of thing that makes you start to lose faith in them.
@Rosona
"new actual first party software"
Get with the times guy, the only time we actually get these is when they release a new console (upgrades to an already existing console varies), and it's your standard mainline and a spin-off Mario, mainline Zelda, Smash Bros, and one IP (most likely Animal Crossing) if they're feeling generous. I think we were lucky to get Splatoon 3, to be honest.
@Rosona
But i like Miitopia.
I played it a lot on 3DS.
I am also a very different gamer unlike majority users here.
I'm not kind of gamer who is waiting for AAA games, BOTW, Smash Bros, Splatoon, etc. Not at all.
I'm more like Casual type gamer, adore casual games, Not so popular games, Quirky games, Cute cartoonish games, Girlie games, Hidden gem games. But when talking about Konami's Rhythm games, i am an Expert DDR player.
@Rosona
Trust me dude I've been losing faith in Nintendo for quite some time but I'll take what I can get. Call it fanboy loyalty I guess, but I love Nintendo and their games differ from what other companies put out.
But I really agree with what you're saying and desperately hope that they make actual sequels and dust off their IPs that they have been criminally neglecting instead of ports upon ports.
@Anti-Matter
It takes major balls to admit all of that, kid. <3
Definitely the port everyone was waiting for!
@Jakiboy
Pardon me, sir.
I am 36 years old gentleman from Indonesia.
I admit i have completely very different gaming taste for a grown up people like me.
I am a gamer who play DDR, Beatmania IIDX, Drummania, Para Para Paradise, K-1, Chocobo Racing, Ratchet & Clank games, Sly Cooper games, Petz series games, Imagine series games, Cooking Mama, Pretty Princess Party, Nintendogs, Miitopia, Tomodachi Life, Style Savvy games, Yokai Watch 3DS, etc and have No interest at all with Smash Bros, Zelda games, typical Western AAA games, etc.
I am a different kind of gamer, Rhythm games are my strong skills.
@Anti-Matter
Apologies, I use "kid" regardless of age. Like I'll use guy, dude, and man regardless of gender; no connotations to it. Just part of being brought up as a slumkid, I guess.
Also nice to know, I actually have more respect for cusual gamers coming out and admitting it, than the usual ranting hardcore ones... x
I wonder if this is pulse testing for a sequel?
Granted this is a good idea to both give the ACNH only fans a game with a similar artstyle and to ease them into the JRPG genre. Marketing will be key here.
I’m excited about this. Will get it when it is on sale.
I can't believe this is $50
miitopia on switch means we get the hd twerkey
let that settle in.
Didn't get around to this on 3DS, so I'm glad it's coming to Switch.
@Rosona agreed. I mean, I kinda see why they revived the franchise and I am glad they did bc Miis are cool. This game is cool, but they are passing this off as new content from their perspective. Yeah, I am losing faith in Nintendo too. I don't get why they didn't make a sequel, other than laziness and greed. Cool game, but hard pass
@iNintendo To get 100% in the 3DS version took me about 135 hours, lots of grinding, and playing every path on a stage. Not overly hard, just time consuming, and annoying when they make you change jobs, or split your party up during the middle of a level for no real reason leaving your main party with no healer(chef), or one of the best members of your party keeps getting sick, and has to stay at the Inn to rest.
Switch is the junkyard of gaming nowadays. Every single company is dumping its old games there... remastered, and for full price!
@thehoppypoppy same but i would probably get the 3ds version first bc i dont have a switch
This is unironically my fav game of all time- BEST GAME ON 3DS.
Put maybe 2000+ hours into it.
Def gonna be a double dip for me
@harouhiko because it will be more exciting and new things can be added in the game. Porting everything is a bit lazy at some point.
Disappointed this isn't a sequel since I already played the first Miitopia. If the price is $40, I'll maybe double dip.
I highly recommend this game for those who haven't played it. It's a goofy fun RPG taking it's mii like humor to the max.
@Mr_Persona I know, I know.
My post was sarcastic towards Nintendo.
This game looks incredibly boring.
@Duboiss It's actually a $65 game, we're being graced 15 bucks. $25 dollars more than the 3ds game is a steal for this absolute joy imo
@harouhiko i couldn't tell
@Ogbert Yeah, I realized it after a bit, I was confusing Miitopia with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StreetPass_Mii_Plaza#StreetPass_Quest_/_Find_Mii
@Mr_Persona Tomadachi Life was such a unique game on the 3DS, I would love to see it show up on Switch or see a sequel.
My question is now, aside from new hair styles and a higher resolution, how much if any new content will be added to Miitopia? Still grabbing it either way.
@Mountain_Man It's a unique experience. For it's time, seeing your Mii characters (of yourself, friends, family, celebrities even) talk, collaborate and battle in an RPG was a great experience. It plays on a lot of the tropes of Nintendo and RPG games in general but is a genuinely fun experience.
@redpanda0310 I agree this game is great, and could only be matched in Nintendo adding Tomadachi Life as well. I like your avatar, would be great if Nintendo decided they wanted to also bring the badge arcade to the Switch. Good times!
@Nico07 OH MY GOSH
Dude you're like the only person I've met who actually likes Badge Arcade- i loved it
lol
@redpanda0310
Yo, i also like Badge Arcade on 3DS. 😀
I got some nice Animal Crossing app (Eshop, Mii, History, Camera, etc) from playing Badge Arcade.
@MS7000 Why do you have to be such an *****?
@Donkey-Kong-Fan I see 5 asterisks so I am sort of curious what you called me because now am I unsure how I should respond.
Don't know. My schtick maybe? =P
In my opinion, Nintendo have not done enough from a first party perspective to ensure the Switch has great games (and I don't just mean over the last year with the pandemic). The Wii U's library honestly felt better to me. Sure you will get a couple of games that are good, but quite frankly, it is frustrating seeing a company with such a wonderful library of franchises not make any new games with them, but keep porting from the same few each time, and especially with minimal improvements, whilst charging full price.
I am not begrudging anyone who would still like to buy the ports, or those who have never been able to play them before, so I don't think I am being rude to anyone who likes Nintendo. I am allowed my opinion after all.
And if I am being rude to Nintendo as a company, that's just business. As people on both sides who either agree or disagree with me have said; Nintendo are a business, they are not our friendly cool uncles. All they want is our money. Nintendo aren't making any games I care about, so of course I am going to criticise them. I could move onto another platform of course, but then I would have a different set of problems anyway. Not to mention, I still hold on to the faint hope that Nintendo mighy actually make a new game in one of the series we haven't seen in a while.
That's why my comments may come off a certain way. If you don't like my comments, you are welcome to block me. It would be a shame for you to do so, but it is your choice.
@redpanda0310 If Badge Arcade returned on Switch with the ability to use badges as profile icons, I'd be very happy - decorating my home screen with badges was really cool
@MS7000 Nintendo fans: We want the Virtual Console back to play previous Nintendo games!
Also Nintendo fans: Why are they making us play their games again?!
@anoyonmus At the same time, this launched at $40 for the 3DS. We’re spending an extra $10 for a horse? What are we, ReviewTechUSA?
@MrCookieCrisps Hmmm? Is there any specific reason you tagged me? I don't recall mentioning virtual console in my comments on this article...
@Rosona You’re too easy to please?
How bout being happy for them if Miitopia’s reveal was equivalent to Ultimate or Metroid Prime 4’s reveal to them?
@MS7000 Your first comment: Ahh yes... Nintendo is starting to run out of Wii U games, so start porting from the other console out at the time...
The Switch is just gonna be a port machine for Nintendo's best games from last generation isn't it?
You’re part of the ‘also’ Nintendo fans.
@PikaPhantom Ooh yeah good idea badges as pfps
@Anti-Matter Yeah its pretty fun just doing your 2 free daily plays and "catchin' em all" in an arcade lol
@MS7000 With your attitude, I’m going to play nothing.
@MrCookieCrisps A pity.
In that case, have a good morning/afternoon/evening/night.
@MrCookieCrisps
That’s funny! You lose, ever time, trying to appease this petulant, if not loyal and/or nostalgic, fan base I call my brothers and sisters (exclusive Nintendo owner since ‘91).
For all those ‘losing faith in Nintendo’... GOD, how close to the ledge were they before the Switch came out (and smashed the world)? And still, it’s, well, 9 months have gone and passed...what have you done for me lately? Huh, more ports, ARRRGH?!
Ultimately, I do sort of feel bad for NintenDOOMers because, like, if only there were ANY other options in the entire World to play video games?! Woe is them, but the door is right there! Cheers.
@CodyDogg What comment of mine are you responding to?
@MrCookieCrisps
“Nintendo fans: We want the Virtual Console back to play previous Nintendo games!
Also Nintendo fans: Why are they making us play their games again?!”
This, generally.
@Silly_G I guess maybe we must be misunderstanding each other?
Everything I’ve read about Miitopia this week after the Direct says the game does, in fact, function explicitly because you meet Mii’s via Streetpass. Weather they are friends/family or strangers, the whole concept of the game is that their Mii’s are used in game to interact with your Mii character. Otherwise you find yourself wasting time creating dozens of Mii’s on your own to fill those roles, which I suppose could be fun for someone but sounds kinda tedious. So I stand by my point about the social aspect of the 3DS version of this game and how that will translate to a “home” version on Switch.
Perhaps you played it differently?
@Rosona If this single game makes you lose faith in Nintendo, your love for them was fragile to begin with. You completely forget that Nintendo is developing plenty of new AAA game like Splatoon 3, BOTW 2, Metroid Prime 4, and many more we haven't heard of.
Nintendo continues to make all their games the best quality possible, they make games with the player's enjoyment as their first priority, and yet you still want to claim you're "losing faith in them". Get the hell out of here with that logic.
It makes me wonder why you're even on a Nintendo fan site.
@Donkey-Kong-Fan
You sir are completely missing the point and make assumptions for things you don't know.
You clearly keep your rose tinted glasses on for anything from Nintendo, in your eyes they evidently can't put a foot wrong, an anyone who thinks differently is in your opinion wrong.
I'd suggest you not be so blind or elitist, it stinks.
£40 for a port of a 3DS game which is £10 over it's 3DS rrp, for an old game isn't on. If they would actually improve it or chain some bits it wouldn't be as bad, but here they should have done a sequel. Not an easy cash grab of a game that isn't that old.
