Hazelight Studios founder, Josef Fares - who once famously got up on stage at The Game Awards and told The Oscars where to go, has recently been asked about the possibility of a Nintendo Switch version of his company's upcoming co-op adventure It Takes Two.
In case you have been wondering about the chances of this one making the leap across to the Switch, unfortunately, there are no plans right now. In fact, the director is not even sure if the game would be possible on the hybrid system due to everything that's going on in it. He added how it takes "a lot of effort" just to get it up and running on the "old-gen consoles" like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Here's Josef's full response in an interview with GamingBolt:
"No, we don’t have [any plans],. Not sure we can do it actually. I’m not sure, because people forget sometimes, we do split screen games with a lot of s**t in it. Like, there’s a lot of s**t going on. Trust me, it takes a lot of effort to make this work on the old-gen consoles, because there’s so much going on."
Hazelight previously released A Way Out under the EA Originals program in 2018, and before that, the former film director was known for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, which arrived on the Switch eShop in 2019.
Would you like to see EA bring a game like this to the Nintendo Switch? Have you played any of Josef's previous releases? Leave a comment down below.

Anything is possible, If you want it to be all you need is
panic button has entered the chat
Switch was enough for Brothers where 3DS and Vita likely wouldn't have been, and its Skyrim port happened where PSP Oblivion never had. Better luck next gen.
Even if they did get this game to work on Switch it probably wouldn't work well.
It's probably possible, but would require a huge graphical downgrade to the point of being a bad experience and not true to the creators vision.
The textures would surely take too much of a hit in this game.
Even the trailer doesn't run at 60 fps...
Anyone remember Ark Survival on Switch?
Well at least he was s**t honest.
It's EA, their games are s**t anyway. So I don't care.
@Ventilator It all comes down to optimization, for instance look at the work they did bringing The Witcher 3 to the Switch.
Or look at how Cyberpunk 2077 runs on a PS4 / XBOX ONE. That's a good example of a poorly optimized game.
They can keep it for all I care 😒
@sanderev The Witcher 3 were a old game and still looks blurry on Switch due to downscaling and lower resolution.
As for this game, it won't run good on PS4 or Xbox One. 30 fps at best. The textures in this game looks quite better than Witcher 3 and would take a hard hit on Switch.
Switch hardware were never designed for "RTX 2080 games".
This is why i play these games on PC instead as i get 60-120 fps at 1440p, but i get 4K/60 on most too if i want. I prefer fps and gfx over resolution, so i stick with 1440p for everything on Ultra.
Meh, I wouldn’t call it a loss.
The only game I want on the Switch from EA is skate 4.
@sanderev Your loss. A Way Out was an excellent and really unique co-op experience. But keep those blinders on, the outside world is scary.
Not sure it is possible = we can't be bothered with the effort it would take.
Super-excited for this game, too bad it's not coming for switch.
Never heard of this until now. Not much of a co-op guy myself, (more of a Tesco fan), but it does look kinda cool from flicking through the trailer. There aren't enough 3D platformers, so nice to see this existing
@Morph Not sure it is possible = we can't be bothered with the effort it would take.
That response = entitled gamer who thinks developers owe them something.
That actually looks really cool and yeah he's right. Just no way this would work on the Switch. Even if it could it would require substantial downgrades and just wouldn't be worth it.
After seeing what the Switch can do, and seeing this game's trailer, the "not sure it's possible" argument is a hot bowl of BS. Even if the resolution or graphics have to be tweaked a bit, we are all aware that Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild were year one games, right? And Pikmin 3 just hit the Switch as well. Even if people somehow believe that it's different because those are Nintendo's games, this game is definitely not more demanding than games like Doom and The Witcher 3. If they wanted it on the Switch, they would make it happen. It's that simple.
So the news is "no news" about a game that isn't a Nintendo game? ^^
@kobashi100 what part of that is entitled? I think you need to go and look up a definition of the word. I couldn't care less whether they port or not.
There are a lot of 'impossible' ports on switch. If they say its impossible, the short comings is on their side...
This is the first I have seen of this game and it looks fantastic.
The voice acting on the other hand just doesn't seem to gel. I can't quite put my ears on it but maybe it just seems like the characters have the wrong sort of voice. Either way this is one I am looking forward to on my PS4 now.
Oh well, it looks like an annoying game anyway. Hate the voice acting on the trailer, very grating.
What is it with this year and co-op games about couples like come on guys we just had haven
I mean just look at how good it looks graphically, of course this was not coming to switch.
Also why would you want to play this on a switch, it would ruin its main appeal, the pixar quality animations! And its main draw is two player, which would be rubbish handheld so you might as well play on the ps4 rather than switch docked lol
@Mince 2 player is rubbish handheld? Many would disagree w that, but I don't like any multiplayer games.
@Mince Just to put it out there, if it did come to the Switch, I don't think anyone would be foolish enough to put this particular game in split screen in TABLETOP mode (not handheld, as that doesn't even make sense). If the effort were made, I would think that the biggest change to the game would be either a complete lack of portable multiplayer or local multisystem play. Having said all of that, have you played Mario Kart? Split Screen works great in tabletop. You can show me the door if you like, but that's kind of a fact.
It's not they are not sure.
The answer is "EA"
So it can't be.
@Godzil Unravel is publisher by EA both games are on switch so I doubt that is the reason.
I honestly think the graphics are too good, have you watched the trailer the cutscenes look fantastic, they remind me of a pixar movie
Gotta love how some people think "I doubt it's possible" = "I'm too lazy to consider porting it" but then when a third party port runs like crap on Switch anyway those same people are like "You shouldn't have brought this to our system"
Yeah I mean... common sense.
A forgettable mobile quality game not coming to Switch? Sounds like a good thing to me.
I'm on their side. Just because the switch is popular, it doesn't mean that suddenly everything is possible to port on the hardware.
Developpers have no obligation to support a platform that is purposefully behind in tech and less powerfull as well as having a different cpu architecture. That's entirely nintendo's fault.
Honestly had never heard of this game until now.
ah yes, The usual EA exclusion of the Nintendo Switch. Nothing new there.
Honestly, irdc about this game
@Quantaur Considering the games not released yet, and the moment game sites start reporting about it, hear you are. Kind of say’s the opposite.
It comes out 26th March on pc and consoles
😂 lol
@Mince gonna have to compete with MH Rise
@Casual_Gamer95
Its EA. They always exclude the switch so nothing new there.
We don't need EA on switch. We are doing just fine
@anoyonmus I think many will buy this on sale anyway. I like these games but usually wait a year!
At risk of offending, haha. i have never played a monster hunter game before. Any recommendations for a newcomer?
@Mince I only played the demo but you should find instructions in the game.
Find a weapon that suits you and learn how to use the wirebug
@Casual_Gamer95 even if the switch was powerful enough I would argue developers have no obligation. Wether it's PS, Xbox or switch developers and publishers can choose which systems they want to release software on. When people start calling developers lazy I find that is so disrespectful. The way people just shout this rubbish all because they don't get what they want. They know nothing about the development teams work ethic but think it's cool to call them lazy. At the same time they claim they love the gaming industry which makes no sense at all. Considering we all know how some publishers treat developers with them spending a ridiculous amount of hours per day working, to call people you have no idea about or how they work lazy is pretty stupid.
Sure these people would have a real problem if they were called lazy in regards to there own employment.
@anoyonmus `"we" does not represent everyone tho.
@kobashi100 you're right. they could ignore the xbox or pc if they felt like it. their project, their choice. It's just that for publishers it's more "ok" to leave nintendo in the dust than pc or xbox.
@Mince
Um, ok? I'm not sure what you're trying to claim in response to my comment.
The fact that I made the comment that I've never heard about this game before indicates the opposite??
Sorry, it just comes across as a paradox and I'm genuinely confused.
@Quantaur ok fair opposite was maybe the wrong phrase. I just mean its only just started to be picked up by game sites, and your hearing about it on a site for hardware it also be cannot release on!
Ironic. Their next door neighbours, Respawn Entertainment, seemed to have no issues bringing Apex Legends to the Switch. Two words: Panic Button.
@anoyonmus @Godzil
Apex Legends: "Am I a joke to you?"
EA is starting to change. Apex Legends would be the first big EA game to actually come to the Switch properly. I'd give it the benefit of the doubt that they would be ignoring the Switch if they're just starting to work on it (for real) now.
@NathanTheAsian EA should have asked Panic Button or some other porting studio to port the games for them from the beginning.
Also we are going to have FIFA 22 Legacy Edition come out thanks to EA being lazy to port over the Frostbite Engine.
EA is still the same when it comes to the Nintendo Switch. They won't give Mass Effect, no Star Wars, no Sims. Even if they do bring it, its too late for some of us to care about and won't support them either way. And also they will put it at 60 dollars when on other platforms it is like 10 dollars.
Until EA stops with the FIFA Legacy Editions, that is when they will start supporting Nintendo Switch
@anoyonmus
My point was that maybe they are changing. Apex Legends might be the beginning of that late change.
When you look at the FIFA legacy editions, there's a reason why it works so well, especially in Europe. Yes, it's a copy and paste of an old game with one new feature per game, but at least it runs properly like the old FIFA game. I would much rather have a quality reskin if an old game than a botched port of a new game.
EA isn't treating it like a regular console port, but rather just an entirely different game with the same title. This sort of stuff happened with "handheld versions" of many games in the past, and I believe EA is treating it no differently on the Switch.
@NathanTheAsian Europe sure but what about the people in North America who want to play FIFA?
EA is not changing for the NS. Sure Apex Legends will come out on the switch but I am pretty sure they will drop support for it soon.
They could port some of their older games to the switch but they refuse to do that as well.
EA's lineup for NS: FIFA 22 Legacy Edition, FIFA 23 Legacy Edition, FIFA 24 Legacy Edition, FIFA 25 Legacy Edition, FIFA 26 Legacy Edition, etc...
We get nothing new. Just trash versions of FIFA
EA should just admit that they do not need Nintendo
@anoyonmus How can you assume EA will drop support on Apex Legends on the Switch within a short period of time after launch? They're clearly looking at Epic Games' strategy with Fortnite and working off of that.
Like I said, you should be looking at the Switch versions of FIFA as if it were a handheld version. It's not meant to play the same as the console. It's not "trash" if it holds up better than other sports games on the Switch in terms of performance.
As much as I hate EA, I can see behind the excuses they have made. At least cut them some slack and stop making assumptions.
@ModdedInkling ok EA might not drop support of Apex Legends.
But what makes the Switch versions of FIFA trash is the 60 dollar price tag on essentially roster updated versions of the same game.
I would rather buy Skyrim on switch with that 60 dollars over a legacy edition of FIFA
Their excuses are BS. Just because 1st party games sell better on NS than 3rd party games doesn't mean you drop support for it.
Everyone buys a PS4 because it was cheap and had 1st party games (exclusives) and yet EA still supported them along with Xbox
@anoyonmus
You clearly don't understand my point. They're named the "Legacy Edition" for the reason of not being comparable to the other console counterparts. Besides, Frostbite engine or not, it's an annual series. Of course it's just going to be an updated roster of the same game.
Stop treating it like a console game and treat it like its own game. It's not meant to be compared to an actual port like Skyrim and it's just how it is, no matter how much you complain about EA.
@ModdedInkling in a way it is.
FIFA on switch is essentially the same since 2012. Skyrim came out in 2011.
Skyrim is actually a DECENT port of a good game.
Also you are missing the point of what I am also saying.
The Legacy Editions are trash because they are 60 dollars which has ZERO content.
This very website makes VERY sure that they want the same FIFA game as on other platforms.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/12/feature_nintendo_switch_ports_wed_love_to_see_in_2021
I should have gotten FIFA 18 when it first came out on switch
@Mince i watched the gameplay. U can't seriously believe the split screen wasn't just shown for effect & would actually be the way it would be played in handheld on switch...right? Each player would have their own screen in handheld like every other game, as there's no gameplay reason u need to see the co op partner's screen.
@twztid13 You need to re-read my original comment, Lol you have completely misunderstood.welldone! At no point did I say 2 player handheld is rubbish!
I obviously do not think it would be played splitscreen in handheld. I simply said two player would be rubbish handheld, because
1. It would be soo much better as a couch coop
2. If its better as couch coop them why not dock it, therefore why not buy on ps4 for better graphics.
3. Even if not playing it as a coop, (for me) this game is about the animations and graphics so again why would you play it in handheld.
Beaides that the method you proposes has one huge limitation, the need for both parties to own a switch. Do both people then need to own the game then aswell?
Why did just chose to try and be clever about multiplayer.
@anoyonmus
But you're just saying the same thing over and over again. The FIFA games on the Switch aren't even ports of the actual versions on other consoles, so why are you comparing them to real ports?
Yes, the Legacy Edition is trash because it is just a reskin of a 2012 game with no new features. But keep in mind, that would be the same price if it was the 2012 game actually released on the Switch. Having to constantly pay $60 sounds about normal to me as basically any annual game series.
The article you linked there shows nothing of what EA said, other than the excuses that I mentioned in an earlier comment. They are lazy and they could easily ask Panic Button to port anything outside of Apex Legends, but that's where I'm gonna go back to my very first point about how they might have just started to change. It's better late than never, and that's what I'm seeing. I'd rather look into the future and not the past, because not everything is predictable based on patterns.
@ModdedInkling You really think EA is starting to change their mind towards Nintendo Switch. They are NOT.
They are only doing this because their investors are pressuring them. They can just put FIFA legacy editions and count that as "support"
Also the article posted shows that people here at NintendoLife don't want another FIFA Legacy Edition. I think some people would rather take a graphically downgraded game with 30 FPS with full feature parity over a reskin of a 2012 game.
I would take graphically downgraded game with 30 FPS (basically it might look like NBA 2K on switch) over a reskin with 60 FPS of a 2012 game.
At this point, I am not really caring about EA. They starting "supporting" too late and at a very late time.
I really hope PES comes to switch and is full feature because that way Konami and Take Two Interactive can teach EA a lesson on how to make quality sports titles and how to set games at a decent price tag.
Even if EA starts putting some decent games, its gonna be games that no one cares about.
At this point, some people are just burned out and just don't want EA to support the platform.
They are not gonna change and they will never change.
I really hope I am wrong about this but based on what EA is doing, I don't think it will ever happen
@sanderev Hazelight isn't an EA studio. They just have a publishing partnership, on a per-game basis.
@Mince I'm replying to the comment u apparently deleted that said:
@twztid13 lol, I was talking about this game specifically being rubbish handheld, considering it is a split-screen game. Did you even watch the trailer? Ffs.
Also, almost every multiplayer switch game requires everyone playing to own a copy of the game (except a select few). Those still sell, so that can't be an obstacle.
