Lenovo and NEC have just revealed a concept mini-PC which shows just how effective Nintendo's approach with the Switch has been.
Part of the LaVie range – which is a joint venture between the two firms – the LaVie Mini is a tiny portable computer with an 8-inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel touchscreen and an 11th Gen Intel Processor with Xe graphics.
Judging from the images shown, this system – should it ever actually come to market – isn't going to provide the most comfortable typing experience, but the objective here is to claim that Holy Grail of consumer convergence: a portable computer which also works as a portable games system.
Not only do Lenovo and NEC showcase this system with detachable controllers which bolt onto the sides of the main unit, they've also shown off a docking station which can output a 4K signal to your TV or monitor. However, like so many of these concepts, there's a snag; even without the controllers attached to the LaVie Mini, it tips the scales at 1.28 pounds. The Switch, with its Joy-Con attached, weighs 0.88 pounds.
Given that many other attempts at this kind of thing have either failed or not gotten past the concept stage, it remains to be seen if the LaVie Mini becomes a solid reality. Whatever happens, it's yet more vindication for Nintendo's unique approach for its latest gaming system. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

The gpd win 3 is the best switch clone imo
As someone who games mostly on Switch and PC I'm always intrigued by this type of tech. However, I think I'm at the point now where the Switch library is so vast that it covers most of my portable needs (plus I have a gaming laptop which is...somewhat portable).
I must say the "joycons" look really uncomfortable though. They don't look they provide much grip/support either.
Looks like a spectacular failure.
Don't copy - innovate!
Yes I know, through history there are many examples of copying a good idea badly performed, and succeding better. But this? Nah.
I think this looks pretty alright, but idk if it would really take off. If it's decently powerful I might be interested, my Switch has just become a dust collector the past few months
Does it have switch exclusives too?
No?
Then I don’t care.
Can I play Big Riggs on this?
While I'm sure Nintendo has inspired other companies to look at cashing in on the success of the Switch, just like the NES Mini they were definitely not the first ones to the table with the actual idea. I had multiple controllers that could clamp to a phone or tablet years before the Switch appeared. It's not like docking stations to allow a screen to connect to a portable PC are exactly a new thing either. Don't get me wrong, Nintendo nailed it (with both Switch and NES Mini) and others took notice, but they didn't really come up with a revolutionary concept. Arguably the most original aspects of the Switch design were the ability for the JoyCons to join together into a controller for TV play or to be two separate controllers for multiplayer. Oddly, these seem to be the least copied ideas.
I'm bummed that there are no "mini PCs" on the market. I actually wouldn't mind something like this for day-to-day tasks and to play less demanding older games on.
It looks pretty horrible but glad to see people trying out the format I guess. Just hope the Switch Pro rumours turn out to be true, I'd love to upgrade to a higher spec version.
Oh man, I just threw up!
My ideal gaming device/platform wishlist:
1. Something like the Switch which can be used handheld or docked with a bigger screen. Not much interested in PC features, but multimedia and cellular network could be great for on-the-go gaming.
2. Something that has reasonable power and is refreshed every 2-3 years to keep up/refine. If a level equivalent to whatever the previous console generation is at that moment can be achieved, that should be good enough.
3. Something with an ongoing library like Steam. The biggest "unknown" problem I have with Switch is that probably Nintendo will shut down the eShop in 10 years and these games won't be playable on Switch 2/3, or I have to repurchase those games.
4. Indie developers should support the system well. I am not too precious about AAA publishers but some franchises like Dragon Quest are just too important to pass. Also not a fanboy of exclusives by any of the first parties (except some inclination towards certain Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Donkey Kong and Fire Emblem).
5. Something popular enough to warrant 3rd party accessories, especially the likes of gaming grips.
Exist machine like this who can handle GameCube and PS2 emulators ???
Does it have good specs?
This is a stretch as a Nintendo related article. It seems NL is running out of ideas again.
The new GPD is also very Switch-like. GPD makes cool products and it's a sweet looking device but the keyboard looks awful.
Anyone else get reminded by this of some of Sony's old mini laptops?
we have laptops and tablets you know
The GPD Win 3 and that handheld Alienware concept looks miles better than this, aesthetically...
I'll stick to the GPD win line...they exist as apposed to this "concept" and the Alienware Concept. But at least theres competion for GPD now that ONE GX and Aya Neo are launching. Its a good time for windows powered switch clones, but they are sooooo much more powerful and expensive than switch
Not sure why we are crediting Nintendo with other company’s designs, but ok
@Ultrasmiles I even have this like 7 years old small laptop here that I'm using right now, that snaps fingers Switches to a tablet by disconnecting the keyboard. Costed about as much as a new Switch too. But it looks way better than that thing in this article, and even if it could run more demanding games than my Switch can, I'd still prefer the smaller Switch as a portable gaming device. More demanding doesn't mean better, and not-Nintendo DOES mean no new real Nintendo games.
I'd love to see more portable devices competing against the switch.
It's not copying Nintendo if the joysticks don't drift...
@tonyp1987 You should see The Aya Neo
It looks familiar for some reason, where have I seen that model before, hmmmmm its on the tip of my tongue...
Is game vice going to try and sue these guys too?...
@SHULZ021 I saw it before but it's still in prototype stage and no price yet lol
580g is still pretty light, that's less than a MS Surface and significantly less than any gaming laptop.
Too bad they're using Intel chips, it would be really interesting to see it with AMD's most recent platforms, would certainly be faster, cooler, cheaper and overall more energy-efficient.
I'm gonna wait, I do want a handheld PC like the switch, so that I can play my steam games anywhere, however I would want Google play/Apple store integrated with it for apps/music and enough power to at least run some PS4 ported games.
