We've always had a soft spot for the original Mortal Kombat film. It was a silly affair, no question about it, but proved quite entertaining for a video game adaptation, which we can also appreciate is a low bar. The film series got sunk by a dreadful sequel, but that was a fair while ago now, and the resurgent success of the video game series has convinced Warner Bros. to jump in again with its forthcoming Mortal Kombat's reboot.
First announced two years ago, we've now been given a brief look at what to expect via Warner Bros. new promo reel. While the footage is brief, you can see a few Mortal Kombat clips at 0:40, 1:09 and 1:28. Most notably, it gives us our first real look at Sub-Zero and Sonya Blade.
Placed amongst upcoming films like Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy, Mortal Kombat is high on Warner Bros. release list, due to launch this year on April 16th. These will be available immediately via HBO Max due to the fact that many cinemas remain shut due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Mortal Kombat, as we're sure you're aware, began life as a coin-op during the one-on-one fighting craze popularized by Capcom's Street Fighter II in the early '90s. The subsequent home ports were responsible for one of the biggest software launches in the history of the industry. Mulitple sequels have followed in the decades since; Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is the latest in that long line.
Will you be watching the new Mortal Kombat movie? Did you enjoy the original film? Let us know in the comments.

I dunno what I’m more pessimistic about this movie or the Borderlands movie. Hopefully they both surprise me with how awesome they are.
I approach video game movies like a big family Thanksgiving dinner gathering. I'm going to be annoyed, unintentionally (and sometimes intentionally) insulted, embarrassed, at times angry, awkward, and overall not looking forward to the torture. However, if I keep my expectations on the floor to begin with and crack open as many beers prior AND during the event I'm bound to have a better time through it and just be entertained.
Yeah the whole “it’s an invitation to Mortal Kombat” was pretty cringe. I’m starting to have serious doubts about this movie but I will try to remain optimistic.
If they just reboot the second movie then they are good. The first movie was fine as is.
Honestly, the original Mortal Kombat movie was one of the VHS tapes that I watched over and over again to the point where I could just about recite each line.
I watched it recently, and I gotta say, it really does hold up as a good bad movie. The cinematography, color palette, and set design is actually top notch. The dialogue and acting are quite awful, but not so bad that it makes the movie unwatchable.
Now, Mortal Kombat II: Annihilation was objectively bad. It wasn't even that fun to watch while drunk and making fun of it. Here's hoping the sequel doesn't take itself TOO seriously
I'm sorry but it looks bad - and the worst kind of bad: boring, cringy and completely forgettable. The 90s movie was also bad but awesomely bad - I still enjoy it from time to time.
I have high hope for this movie cause the legendary Hiroyuki Sanada (Ninja in the Dragon's Den, Legend of the Eight Samurai, Rush Hour 3) is going to be in it as Scorpion so can't wait to see how he handle the role and if the darker violence nature of the film will do it justice.
@NightBeast The 90s film was actually good though, the director himself didn't just hired his wife, white washing the characters, or a bunch of nobody off the street to star in the film. It was a fully fledge high choreograph martial arts film using real martial arts actors and having an Enter the Dragon like story while keeping the characters true to the game with a lot of game elements added that doesn't look or feel too corny unlike the Street Fighter film of that same era. The only disappointment was that the sequel film didn't live up to the original and it kill any potential interest of the IP going forward. This new film however still need a lot to prove before I could judge it, from what I seen so far it looks okay I still need to see a full trailer first before I could give my full thoughts on it.
@DockEllisD
Me too!
@Ryu_Niiyama If they reboot it they had to start from the beginning, it doesn't make since to just reboot the second cause then people will wonder what happen to the first or what happen to the tournament. Still these movies really need to go beyond the tournament, it's like rebooting the same story but doesn't go anywhere with it. For once they need to give us an MK film that depict the Outworld tournament too cause I feel that one would had made the film feel more epic and that part of the story was cut from the original 90s films. The closes we get of that was Liu Kang vs. Reptile and Shang Tsung in the first film but that's still not enough.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi oh god, I remember how hyped I was for Annihilation. I was so anxious to see it, that I’ve invented sequel scenarios of my own. And even when I was ten years old I understood that the actual movie was beyond awful. But the sad thing is that I’ve watched it multiple times just because I wanted to like it((
@Ghost_of_Hasashi my comment was more to the perspective of the quality of the movie. I wasn’t commenting on storylines. I hope it works out well for you though. It is obvious you are an MK fan.
@NightBeast Oh do I feel your pain. A big mixed group that consisted of my brothers and friends went together to see Annihilation all super hyped. After the movie all of us left that theater with a huge "what the f*ck did we just watch!?" attitude. Talk about a nose dive plane crash of excitement.
@Ryu_Niiyama If they could reboot it with the Outworld tournament added then I believe it could be spectacular but the invasion storyline was never my favorite due to the fact that it just doesn't had that wow factor anymore. Yeap I'm still an MK fan and not just an MK fan but a fan of fighting games in general, it's just these movies that I look down on cause they tend to ruin the good name of these franchise.
My biggest takeaway from this piece is that there is a Space Jam 2.
Wahoo! Let's a go! (etc.)
