Update: This special Super Mario Bros. 35 event is now live! If you want to take part and claim some Platinum Points for your My Nintendo account, make sure to catch up on the info in our article below and get stuck in.
Original Article (Tue 12th Jan, 2021 15:00 GMT): The Mario news just keeps on coming, as Nintendo celebrates today's grand Bowser's Fury reveal with a special challenge for Super Mario Bros. 35 players.
Called the Super Mario Bros. 35 World Count Challenge, a special in-game event will allow players from all over the world to work together to complete specific goals. This all happens over a set period of time, and three events will take place between January and March.
The first event tasks players with defeating a whopping 3.5 million Bowsers over a one-week period. It will kick off on 18th January at 11pm PT, running until 25th January at the same time. To help out, the game's Special Battle during that week will feature courses that offer "additional opportunities" to battle with Bowser.
If the grand total of 3.5 million Bowsers is reached, all players who took down at least one Bowser over that period will receive 350 My Nintendo Platinum Points as a reward. More details on the second and third challenges will be revealed at a later date.
Think you'll get stuck into this special event? If you missed the news, a special Mario-themed Nintendo Switch console has also just been revealed!

Ooh, platinum points. Those useless things which are even more useless after 3DS and Wii U rewards were removed (well, at least the discounts).
@MS7000 - Just imagine how many desktop backgrounds you'll be able to get with those points! 👍
The only time I've ever spent any Platinum Points was buying the jar to put them in.
This is cool. I'll play it (I'd play Mario 35 anyways cuz I love it). But I'm really hoping they add Super Mario 3, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 3D Land, and other games to the multiplayer brawl! Oh, Super Mario World could be pretty interesting with cape races, yoshi, etc.
@OorWullie I want to set up multiple user accounts here, just so I can give your comment more Likes.
Thank you for so perfectly encapsulating the ridiculousness of Nintendo’s reward system.
I’ve only been able to play a few matches because it doesn’t work for me. I have ok wifi (or at least good enough to play other multiplayer games with little to no problem) and have online. I really didn’t care for it either. I’d rather just play regular Mario instead, which is a shame because I thought a Mario battle royal would be fun.
@OorWullie I used them to buy discounted VC titles a few years ago, but it's been a long time since there's been anything I want on offer that I don't already own.
This will definitely be an easy way to earn some coins to sit in my jar. If only those posters were available again - I missed them when they sold out so fast! My only gripe for Super Mario 35 is that it is so slow compared to the original game on NES/Famicom. I play the original a lot and it throws off my game that I had to learn the new timing.
Complete all 3 missions to have the game not die on March 31st!
I'll only be interested in a speed run.
This will be difficult since 75% of the levels people choose are 1-1 and 1-2.
Yes please I'll take those Platinum Points
Challenge accepted!
It takes 3.5 million to complete the challenge, but it only takes one to complete me
Go on then. Any excuse to keep playing Not that I need one.
Hitting that Axe on the Bridge never gets old.
this is what they should be doing instead of deleting the game in March- finding new ways to expand and play the game.
@Chrysologus They will run a special event to give more Bowser opportunities. So have some fireballs ready (if he gets sent your way) or hit the axe. I normally run into at least one Bowser each time I play (one game I had about 10-15 I killed though when it got down to the top five and we kept just sending them back and forth - this also stinks when there are a lot of Lakitus in the final moments).
Dude 200 gold points would be fine.
I'll happily contribute to the Bowser count but they can keep the platinum coins.
I am not going to break my neck to get them, but there has been some stuff I have enjoyed on My Nintendo. But it is still a poor substitute for the old system.
Platinum Coins have actually gotten back into usefulness as they've added physical rewards lately. I've got a really cool Super Mario switch cart container and an Age of Calamity notepad, for example.
Does it count if you kill someone else's bowser with a star?
I might try it, but I'll say this. I won't miss this game when it disappears. Doesn't grab me like Tetris 99 does.
See, I was hoping that SMB35 would have competitions like Tetris 99's Maximus Cups for eShop gold coins. Figures. Just when I'm good at a competition there's no real reward lol. Oh well...😐
