DreamWorks Animation's Spirit franchise has been on a journey these last two decades. Going back to 2002 with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, it saw an unexpected revival in 2017 through a 3D animated Netflix series, Spirit Riding Free. In preparation for upcoming film Spirit Untamed, publisher Outright Games has now revealed it will be releasing a video game tie-in this summer.
Called DreamWorks Spirit Lucky’s Big Adventure, it comes as a collaboration between the publishers, Universal Games and Digital Platforms. Marking Spirit's first-ever video game adaptation, Outright Games provided this statement:
Outright Games and Universal Games and Digital Platforms are excited to reveal the upcoming release of DreamWorks Spirit Lucky’s Big Adventure, the first-ever video game set in the adventurous world of DreamWorks Animation’s award-winning Spirit franchise. The new video game will release on Nintendo Switch™, Playstation®4, Xbox One and PC digital in summer 2021 for £34.99.
Inspired by the upcoming DreamWorks Animation feature film, Spirit Untamed, this new open-world action-adventure game offers players a chance to go on a wild adventure and explore the wonders of the frontier with Lucky and her beloved wild mustang, Spirit. This original story celebrates themes of adventure, friendship and the special bond between a girl and her horse as Lucky teams up with best friends, Abigail and Pru, to embark on a fun-filled quest for hidden treasure in Miradero.
Within this adventure, Lucky and Spirit are rescuing animals in danger, searching for treasure across an open frontier whilst clashing with a villainous horse wrangler, Hendricks. Helping the townsfolk along the way, you can also take part in horse races, gather numerous collectables and customise Lucky with new outfits and accessories.
Due to launch summer 2021 on Nintendo Switch, it's a single-player only experience and it'll be interesting to see how this adaptation fares.

Annnnd they're out of ideas
We get this garbage and still NO NINJA GAIDEN TRILOGY?
But does the Switch really have a “horsepower?” Looking back at other Outright games, I highly doubt it.
Hm... Not bad for girlie game.
Horse trainer games with female trainer are pretty popular on Europe recently.
From Barbie, Bibi & Tina, even Hannah Montana.
Will keep my eyes peeled on it for gameplay videos.
This new Spirit series appears to be a cash grab as far as I can tell. I barely see any connection to the original film other than its title character.
It's a reboot, yes, but it doesn't really have the "spirit" of the film.
Wow. Looks nightmare-ish))
So odd that this ended up as a franchise after so long.
My sister is obsessed with this show but the game looks pretty badddd...
The recent animated entries went over my head until recently, but I appreciate DreamWorks doing something with the franchise that still has one of my all-time favourite movies at its root. Compared to how many WDAS classics of the similar release period the corporate Disney even seems to remember they ever had, that's quite a bit. As for "cash grab", the term is every bit as true as it is silly - we're talking the commercial fiction industry where NOTHING gets made without expectations to grab some cash in return. Budgets, especially animation ones, don't exactly grow on trees. But this redundant quip is often spammed by fans as opposed to alleged "art" (clarifying which infallibly nets you a list of the opinion source's personal favourites, but that's a pure coincidence, right?😏).
Needless to say, I'll keep an eye on the game, too.
I'm not going to buy it new, but honestly I wanna play it. I'm always intrigued to see how much effort was put into these licensed cash grab games. This one looks somewhat quality. Open world? Count me in lol
The film was good and I still have a lot of respect for DreamWorks making a big-budget traditionally animated film when CG-animated films were exploding in popularity, but I still think it's weird they turned it into a franchise. This is a game I didn't know I needed prior to seeing this article. Not much has changed after reading the article.
At the very least, I hope this is a decent game for kids. Good controls, okay enough graphics, engaging gameplay, etc. Kids deserve decent games even if older players can't find the same enjoyment. I might get it if it goes on sale.
My five year old just popped time big for this.
People really need to bare that in mind.
Have to say, "Spirit - Riding free" may have nothing to do with the original film, but it's actually one of the better series for children, especially compared to total crap-fests like "Paw Patrol", which my children unfortunately are serious fans of.
This game somewhat captures the (imo decent) art-style of the show, but irritatingly changes it to "more childish", which wouldn't be necessary at all.
Yuck. Aside from some of the toys, I can't stand SRF.
spits out drink They're making another movie!? I didn't even know about the show until I saw the toys in a walmart, but this is just very weird.
Spirit????? Really???
NO PLEASE! PUT MKT ON SWITCH, ANYTHING BUT THIS! D:
@Pacmanrace
Why not ?
I think this Horse training game looks okay for me.
Im not sure why people come here and waste their time hating on games like these. I have a daughter who was so happy to see this trailer. Its like they forget kids are allowed to play on a Nintendo as well. Grow up already!
@Elvie completely unrelated to the original film. It has more to do with the Netflix series, which is also unrelated to the film so it's no surprise that this would be also.
Unfortunately my kids are also a fan of the series. I've got a few of the OG games before but they have always been pretty poor, even by my kids set of standards and the youngest was 5 the last time she played one of their games. Would be interested to know if this company has learned how to make decent games yet (admittedly we haven't played all their games).
@LavaTwilight
The other quite good OG Games was Paw Patrol Mighty Pups. It was better than the previous Paw Patrol.
