One of the higher-profile third-party releases coming to the Nintendo Switch this year is Respawn Entertainment's free-to-play first-person shooter, Apex Legends (another EA title).
Last week, a Japanese release trailer for the game mentioned this version would be launching on the same date as Season 8 on 2nd February. Now, an Amazon Japan listing for the "Champion Edition" has listed the same date and pre-orders are live.
Apex Legends was originally due to arrive on the Switch last year until Respawn delayed the game in October. Director Chad Grenier said the team wanted to do the Nintendo version "justice" - and as a result it would require more development time.
"For those who game on the Nintendo Switch, we’re still hard at work on the port, but in order to do justice to the game and make it into the great experience Switch players deserve, our team needs more time. This year has brought on unexpected new challenges, to put it mildly, and we don’t want to rush anything out."
If Apex Legends is in fact arriving on 2nd February, we expect to hear something official very soon. Will you be downloading this free-to-play title when it eventually lands on the Switch? Drop a comment down below.

Probably will be announced at a partner direct. It seems about time that we will get one.
I doubt that, if it even is announced and isn't like Skyward Sword they'll probably randomly drop a tweet or video
"THIS IS PROOF THERES A DIRECT COMING!" -Thirsty Direct Bois
Who cares about this still
I mean i may of tried it out before but now I have games to play
I will never spend another dollar on an EA product ever again. They're helping to ruin the industry with crap like this.
Why isn’t this tagged rumour? ‘Appears to have been revealed’ is just code for ‘rumoured to be’. If it’s not fact then it’s a rumour.
It's bound to be a Partners Showcase on February 2nd. And I'm so glad of that, I'm eager to see more about Monster Hunter Stories, No More Heroes, TWEWY, SMTV and other surprises. Bring it on!
@Rika_Yoshitake A partners Direct, but yes.
So so tired of free-to-play.
No thank you. I'm good with my traditional model games.
I will give this game another shot saying as I seem to like games better when there ported to the switch.
@Mgene15
A lot of people, actually.
Hopefully it leads to games like Titanfall 2, Battlefield, and other shooters hitting Switch.
@Maulbert Apex is free to play. You don't need to pay money for this (probably). I will be checking it out eventually
@JR150 Frostbite cannot run on switch as of now. Even if the switch manages to run frostbite, we probably won't see battlefield.
We could probably see games like Battlefront 2 or FIFA
@anoyonmus
If the rumors for PVZ: Battle For Neighborville are true, then the Switch can run the engine in some form if they make it work.
Who knows?
@JR150 its frostbite 3. Just because the engine works on one game doesn't mean it will work on all frostbite games.
Most likely, I would think we would see FIFA and Star Wars.
I think we could see 30 fps on apex. I won't mind that anyway.
I also heard that a Nintendo Direct could happen this week.
I'd like to try playing it, I have a few friends who like it
Apex is great. Funner that Fortnite for sure. We will see if this port is possible, I have my doubts on the performance front.
Is this F2P or there is a cost involved? I hope it is a good port.
@anoyonmus I'd take a Bad Company 2 Xbox 360 port over the new trash being released under the Battlefield name.
@FredsBodyDouble Battlefield spinoffs is likely.
I hope the port will be good. Performance wise, I would say the framerate will be around 30 fps but it might be better than fortnite. Who knows?
@Qwertyninty its F2P but knowing EA, they will probably charge 60 dollars for a game that is free on other platforms
I’ve watched my son play this on Xbox it’s incredibly boring takes forever to get into a match and then someone shoots you from a location you can’t see it has lovely looking loading screens tho I really can’t see this taking off on switch but who knows I just see it as a really boring version of Fortnite
So excited for this. It’s my go to game when I can’t decide what to play. I play it often on my ps4&5... since corona I’ve gotten into fortnite because I can watch the news and go handheld. This game in my opinion blows fortnite outta the water though and I am so excited to play it in handheld.
For the people that are wondering it’s free to play... you can buy battle passes and skins... I bought the battle pass in season 1 for fun (900 apex coins=9 bucks).... if you play it you will unlock apex coins over the course of the battle pass... enough to buy the next battle pass if you don’t wast your coins on skins. So since season 1 I have paid 10 bucks and have unlocked the last 6 battle passes by just playing. Granted I put in time....... it reminds me of golden eye but each character has 3 unique special abilities and yeah this game is amazing if ya like fortnite without the building. So excited to play this in handheld. My only question is will it be cross platform or am I gonna be waxing all the Nintendo noobs for the next season who have never played it. Hope it runs as well as it does on the PlayStation.... guessing it’s gonna drain my switch battery rather quickly though but it’ll be nice to change it up from fortnight.
@FroZtedFlakerZz Where does Skyward Sword come into it?
@ArlongKing01 same here I played it on ps4 for a little bit and was waaay better then fortnite, My only complaint was that it takes forever to get new legends but its a free to play game so not really a big issue and the ones they give you are already good.
I guess its good to have it on Switch but for me personally, I’ve grown tired of all the FTP battle royale games. I deleted all of them but Fortnite off my Switch & the only reason that remains is because my kids like the game so I’ll play a match with them every now & again.
@Rob3008 a while back skyward sword got "leaked" and said it was to be revealed soon for Switch, that never happened
I have gotten news from someone that works with EA
Apparently the Apex Legends port is being worked on by
Panic Button. Yes, the same one with DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal
fantastic game, give it a shot if you enjoy games that are DESIGNED very well with lots of character and charisma and fun action - also very team based, so very very fun with friends or randoms (because the ping system is so good too, even if you don't use a mic)
@Savino u right. Everything
Apex Legends will cost 60 dollars to play on nintendo switch while it is free on other platforms
@Gs69 takes forever to get into a match? What system is he playing on because just about on all systems the time to get into a match is almost if not instant
@Jkr think it’s his console it’s an original Xbox one I never use the Xbox but it’s noisy can’t get hold of a series x yet
