It's been nearly two months since Pokémon Go upped its level cap within the Go Beyond update. Moving from Level 40 to 50, players have had an uphill grind to reach this rank ever since, one that's included some entanglements with UK authorities. Yesterday, it finally happened as not one, but two players finally hit this goal.
It was first achieved by FleeceKing, an Australian player who captured this moment via Twitch but it was a close fight all the way. Fellow Australian Lauren Bertoni also hit level 50 just 16 minutes later, making for a heated contest.
It came as several Go players hit level 48 but were waiting on a timed requirement to advance. Unfortunately, they all found their challenges had been reset upon reaching that level. It led to Niantic investigating and once done, Lauren's level 49 requirements were set to completed. FleeceKing appears have to have benefitted in a similar manner, giving them a boost in the competition.
They still had to reach all the level 50 requirements, and that's quite a tall order. This included earning a further 30m XP, achieving 999 Excellent Throws, hitting rank 10 in Go Battle League, 5 Legendary Catches from Legendary encounters in a row and 3 Team Go Rocket Leader wins using Pokémon under 2500CP. A big ask, but they eventually got there.
Are you still playing Pokémon Go? Will you be trying to hit level 50? Let us know in the comments.

Initially, the Go Battle League requirement for level 50 was to hit rank 20, not rank 10.
But Niantic likely decided to walk that back because hitting max rank in GBL is too difficult and unfair, because it all depends on success against other players and the system itself is broken as it encourages people to throw matches to manipulate their match-ups.
A certain South Park Guitar Hero moment comes to mind.....
I’m barely hitting level 37, living in a rural area sucks sometimes.
I would guess being able to leave their houses must have been an advantage.
now we know who burned those forests with fire pokemon
@locky-mavo i am currently on level 28 moved from a village to a bigger city and honestly i dont enjoy playing pokemon go so much because of that. It so much of a big fuss. and the pokestops are literally at every corner it does not feels like and pokemon adventure anymore :/. when i was living in village i had to walk for kilometers for a few pokestops and gyms and it felt amazing. in a city i dont even have to come out of the house and i dont think this is how you supposed to play a game :/
Says a lot about the speed of progress in the games, to be honest.
Wow, I’m impressed! I’m at 41 and 50 looks a looong way off, like, years away.
I think i speak for most people when I day 'NOBODY CARES'
This honestly kind of boggles my mind. How many hours have they poured into this game? How much money have they poured into this game? Do they even consider the game fun at this point? What's going to happen when/if Pokémon GO gets shut down?
I can't really judge them seeing as I've spent literally thousands of hours myself in the mainline series, but I also can't comprehend wanting to play Pokémon GO to this extent. At least with the mainline games, you have tangible, physical proof that the Pokémon you've worked so hard to raise and collect are there and will always be there. With a server-based game like GO, all your hardwork is stored on an account, and should that account or the game ever leave, you're left with practically nothing. I just don't see any fulfillment in that.
@AlexSora89
Level 48 has an arbitrary 8 week waiting period.
You need to walk 25km in a single week at least 8 times.
The requirements before and after that, whilst they can be time consuming, aren't nearly as bad and can be accomplished in about a week or under depending on your level of gameplay day to day.
I probably stopped around level 12. Living in the middle of nowhere makes the game impossible and unfair compared to people who live in a city and have 4 pokestops in reach at any moment.
There is a person that is still playing this game?
This is so dumb. Does anybody care? Like cool you hit max level, you want a trophy?
Yeah I will never hit 50. those requirements are beyond absurd. lol
I just hope I hit level 40 one day. Congrats on 50.
The level you get to in Pokemon Go is the age you lose your virginity at.
man, people are really bitter about game milestones if they dont care about the game
