Update: The first of the three events is now live! If you think you've got what it takes, jump into Super Mario Maker 2 and try your luck.
Original Article (Thu 5th Nov, 2020 15:30 GMT): Nintendo is offering top players the chance to walk away with these lovely collectable medals, and all you have to do is play some games from the comfort of your own home.
Over the coming months, in-game events in Super Mario Maker 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 will give players the chance to win. 100 medals will be available in Super Mario Maker and Smash, while 200 medals will go to the top 100 players on each team in the upcoming Splatoon 2 Splatfest.
The Super Mario maker challenge is first up, taking place within the game itself from 18th November. Here are the details:
The first Game Challenge event is Super Mario Maker 2’s special 35th anniversary-themed Ninji Speedrun course, titled “35th Anniversary Auto-Mario”, taking place between November 18th, 03:00 (UK time) and November 25th, 03:00 (UK time). The top 100 players who manage to set a best time on this special course will win one of 100 medals with a Super Mario Maker 2 engraving.
The next events will pop up in December and January, with medals being given away during the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: European Online Challenge and the Super Star Showdown and Splatoon 2: Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Splatfest.
They do look pretty cool, don't they?
Will you be taking part? Think you have a chance at winning one? Let us know in the comments.

That's a really cool idea! Although I know I'd be nowhere near good enough to get in the top 100. Hopefully they don't have to deal with cheaters.
eBay sellers are drooling rn
I wonder how much they will cost on ebay?
Would have gave it a shot but I sold Spla2oon and Smash a while back.
They will go for a lot on eBay. Good luck you lovely people!
I would love to have one, but I know i'm just not that good.
Might try the Mario Maker 2 one as I feel that is the only one I stand a ghost of a chance in. Smash and Splatoon 2, no such chance.
Oh man! I actually feel like I hold my own pretty well in Splatoon. Its just getting 3 other chumps who can also hold their own holding me back. (that, and also not living on the same continent as the competition)
WIN* these medals!
*medal measures 10mm circumference
I might try smash because not gonna lie I'm not bad but I've seen those crazy monster MM2 speed runners and I don't have splatoon 2 so I figure I might as well give smash a shot.
coins coins everywhere..
How about we do this in America next. Eh?
Europe... Naturally.
Not like there aren't thousands of Nintendo fans stuck at home in America, oh no.
If your from EU and over 35 you can join our Discord and team up!
It's the 2020 Olympics but held by Nintendo.
Might give all three a try. Splatoon 2 is very dependent on the team you're in though.
Imagine that one guy that will win all three.
The top 100 times... on an Auto-Mario course?
Seems an odd choice for competitiveness.
@bluesun maybe it means auto as in car.
@GamingTelescope There not doing this in america why ?
i will enter splatoon, pity they picked difficult games for the competiton. A handy game maybe like advance wars should be in it.
Really cool but I wish these were available for purchase as well
Already did MM2! I've been messing around in their auto mario level. It's really cool and Nintendo hid lots of secrets and doodads. Just wait until you destroy Mario's head!
(But seriously, you can do that)
One moment I'm still flying to Europe ✈️
I'm definitely gonna try, but I usually only get in like top 7000 or something. And all the pros are gonna be out for this one, making it even harder.
I'm not even going to compete given how unlikely I'd win
This is really cool thing to do though, love the idea of having events and giving out medals to the winners in top 100
Ok I'm back. I can confirm that I am currently in the top 7000 or something. Well... now I know what I'm gonna do this weekend.
That's odd. On Nintendo of America's Twitter account, they announced (about 18 hours ago) that the top 35 players' times will win that SMM2 coin. I guess that means making it into the top 35 or top 100 in each respective region? If so, I wonder how to even know if you're good enough ahead of time, since the game only shows your worldwide place. Also, it's a bummer that it's not top 100 for America also. I might stand an outside chance, though still unlikely, of trying for the top 100 in the region. But top 35, that's especially far-fetched... Oh well.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand they'd have to git gud first.
