Nicalis has announced that Monkey Barrels, Good-Feel's twin-stick shooter which launched on Switch last November, will soon be getting a physical release.
This new edition of the game will be arriving on 11th December, coming with a recommended retail price of $39.99. It includes a full-colour instruction manual and a reversible cover insert with alternate artwork, and pre-orders are already live over at Nicalis' store.
Here's a quick overview of the game if you're not familiar:
In Monkey Barrels, two brave simian heroes named Masaru and Hanako attempt to rescue their friend Kotetsu from the evil Dr. Crabbenwold and his army of weaponized household appliances. Players can equip up to four weapons simultaneously from an arsenal of unlockable guns, explosive devices, shields and more—98 in total. Boss battles, player-vs-player online action and a unique "3D pixel art" aesthetic are also among the game's features.
In our review of the game last year, we described it as a "great twin-stick shooter that perhaps plays it a little too safe at times." We'd urge you to give that a read if you're considering a purchase to see if it might be a good fit for you.
Have you already played this one digitally on Switch? Would you recommend it? Let us know in the comments.

Great little game, this. Highly recommended for all twin-stick fans!
If only they'd gone the extra mile and put the game in an actual barrel, eh?
@The_Pixel_King It looks good. Is the online play active and easy to find a game?
@Clyde_Radcliffe I only ever played the single-player campaign, I’m afraid. Sorry buddy.
I have this on my wishlist, it looks like a lot of fun. I think I'll probably pick it up in a digital sale at some point.
Would anyone who has played this game and Enter the Gungeon care to compare the two?
I wonder if this will disappear like the standard physical edition of Ikaruga, from the self-same bloody publisher...
@COVIDberry
Nicalis already put up pre-orders for the standard physical edition of Monkey Barrels on their site, so there's no concerns about that happening.
I feel you though on Ikaruga, I specifically wanted a standard physical release of it but they never made that happen.
They only had an option to buy the game without the add-on stuff for 1 cent cheaper. No dice.
@RupeeClock I was monitoring the status of the standard physical edition on Play-Asia. It remained at "pre-orders opening soon" until late October... when the page was summarily removed.
Needless to say, I will be very hesitant about Nicalis products in the future.
This game was excellent! Simple and a tad short... But excellent
@The_Pixel_King 🤔 So is the single player campaign pretty good? Decent variety? Solid/interesting mechanics?
(No need for a full breakdown, but I’ll take one of course, lol.)
Someone out there must think this indicates Quote is coming to Smash
You guys are killing me. I was still thinking Ikaruga was happening. Is it a done deal then, no physical?
I love Nicalis games and own nearly each release they have on switch physical copies only. Sadly that company has a bad leader and I was worried Nicalis was dead forever, it's been a long while since their last release and even the creator of Issac cut ties.
Fun game but I'm still a little sour about no local multiplayer.
@COVIDberry with u there cuda sworn there was a std
@JasmineDragon been done while back buddy think there's stil Ltd edition about nicalis have their own site
So with shipping and tax £60?
Yeah, I don't think so.
