Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 26th October - 1st November, revealing that Pikmin 3 Deluxe has debuted at the top of the pile.
The game sold an estimated 171,349 physical copies in its opening week which – according to Astris Advisory Japan founder, David Gibson – puts it ahead of the Wii U original for the region. Contrastingly, it was recently reported that in the UK, the Wii U original actually sold more physical copies than the Switch version in its first week.
Plenty of other new games also made it into the top ten this week, including the new Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster and Watch Dogs: Legion, although none of these could match Pikmin's opening numbers.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Pikmin 3 Deluxe (Nintendo, 10/30/20) – 171,349 (New)
- [NSW] Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster (Atlus, 10/29/20) – 52,481 (New)
- [PS4] Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster (Atlus, 10/29/20) – 48,830 (New)
- [PS4] Watch Dogs: Legion (Ubisoft, 10/29/20) – 40,962 (New)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 29,086 (1,746,352)
- [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo, 03/20/20) – 24,009 (5,909,746)
- [PS4] GreedFall (Game Source Entertainment, 10/29/20) – 13,292 (New)

Nintendo Switch – 66,682 (13,002,885)
PlayStation 4 – 3,066 (7,668,022)

Go Pikmin I hope it continues to do well.
They have SMT3 remake over there!
Orimā ni iku
NintendoLife: Hmm, is that it? Can you think of someting more to say?
someting, like Tingle?
The 3DS family had a big boost this week. Combined they were at just 608 sold units last week and this week they sold more than twice the amount with a combined 1467 units. That's even more than last year, were it sold 1070 units.
Why did that happen? Kinda weird.
Pikmin 3 DX had the biggest launch in the series even before taking digital sales into account.
Man, Animal Crossing is on it's way to sell 6 million by years end. Freaking insane! Years ago when Monster Hunter was doing 3-4 million in Japan, that was the ceiling for physical games... And here's a more expensive game, on an ever more expensive console selling almost 2 million copies more.
Here's your weekly reminder that the 3DS LL/XL is beating the Xbox One S and Xbox One X
and that the 2DS LL/XL is beating the PS4 Pro and is half of the regular PS4 sales!
@Grandiajet Yeah!!
I just hope it isn’t forgotten as soon as AoC hits... (Then again, they’re so different, it may be fine.)
@HotGoomba___Rebrand and “wow, look at MK8D still selling.... with numbers like those, we will never see MK9 this generation....
@rockodoodle
MK9 will no doubt be a Switch 2 launch game along with MP4 😉
It wait people said pikmin was doing horrible because of physical only sales from GB. Lol
Ha Super Mario 3D All-Stars already disappeared from the top ten just like it will be from the eShop once April 1st, 2021 arrive.
Factoring in Switch Lite, Switch is approaching 16 million. :V
Hoping the Pikmin series finally gets the recognition it deserves this time around. The creature design and ambiance really is magic.
I thought that SMT Nocturne HD didn't release until next year?
@RobotReptile
Hopefully it has some legs and then Pikmin 4 has another chance to impress, maybe on new Nintendo hardware? It is a game that can really take advantage of increased capability in visuals.
The marketing around Pikmin 3 on Wii U was brilliant, too, but so few were paying attention back then.
Maybe Nintendo will follow up with some additional promotion now that it is doing well.
Dang, SMT Nocturne on Switch actually beat out the PS4 version? A bit surprised, usually, multiplats sell slightly better on PS4.
Hopefully Pikmin sales continue to be good, as one is still hoping to see Pikmin 4
@iLikeUrAttitude It released last week in Japan and will release worldwide next year.
There is hope for pikmin 4
Nintendo life, where's the separate article talking about Pikmin 3 Deluxe being the best selling game in the first week of sales for the franchise in Japan and above the Wii U? You guys made sure to do that on the UK, now I'm waiting for you guys to be fair and do the same on japanese sales. If not, that's really strange to say the least.
Could this Pikmin port on the Switch become the best selling game in the franchises history?, with the Switch's software to console ratio it's very possible.
Delighted with those opening sales for Pikmin on Switch! I bought it here in the UK, but it’s for my son for Christmas. Pikmin 4 please still be a thing!
@johnvboy Pikmin or Pokemon? Or Pokemin or Pikmon?
good for the fans and nintendo, pikmin finaly gets apreciated.
its a fantastic series, that deserves to he continued. i hope in the new nintendo console, because i want to see a glorious 4k version of these funny little fellows.
@Retro_Player_77
there is so much to play right now, and they are still remakes of old mario games. galaxy is great though, but mario64 has been played to dead by many people and is getting too old, and wel mario sunshine is imo one of the worst mario game.
and lets not forget, if you want to buy a mario game you buy mario odyssey, wich is one of the best mario game ever made, no the best.
@WiltonRoots funny you mentioned lol.
i talked with my 8 year son yesterday about pokemon and pikmin, he called them pokemin lol.
36 new Japanese Xbox owners this week lol. Maybe it’s just really difficult to acquire one over there. Perhaps prospective buyers must travel to the top of Mt Fiji to visit the one store that sells you a Xbox
Surprisingly high sales that for Pikmin. It just looks like whatever Nintendo does right now turns to Gold.
Pretty staggering figure when you figure that in Japan pop 126.5 million, 171K+ already have Pikmin 3 deluxe that means almost 1.5% of the total population owns it ALREADY. This keeping in mind the short window to. All this rationally assuming one person purchasing copy. The Pikmin spirit is alive and well!
@WiltonRoots,
I mean Pikmin..bringing Pokemon into all this will only end in tears.
Why are you guys comparing hardware sales? Everyone knows that Nintendo isn't competing against Sony and Microsoft.
A combined 100,000 for the Nocturne remaster is pretty respectable. Hope that is encouraging enough for Atlus. Also, as others have noted, good to see Switch beat PS4 on a multi-platform title. Although, given their respective install bases now, Switch should win every week.
Great news for Pikmin 3, wonder how it will sell over time. Here's hoping Pikmin 4 is on the way.
Glad Pikmin 3's getting a second chance. It's one of the many Wii U exclusives that helped me love the system, and it really deserves to be played by more people. I only hope that Pikmin 4 is suffering from the same hardware delays that Pikmin 3 did when t moved from Wii to Wii U.
See, this is the reason why I don't see an issue with performance. Japanese people seem to prioritize gameplay over game performance, and that's what should be the case over here in NA
Nice to see the japanese embraces Pikmin 3 and not be ***** about the port, unlike how us in the west have been. Hope one day to see Pikmin 4...
@NathanTheAsian See, this is the reason why I don't see an issue with performance. Japanese people seem to prioritize gameplay over game performance, and that's what should be the case over here in NA
Agreed, who cares about a game running at 2 FPS when the gameplay is good.
@Crono1973
I don't know if that's sarcasm or not, but what you said there perfectly sums up what some people are exaggerating about. Some of them treat a slight dip from 30fps to 25fps like it's a massive drop to 2fps.
@NathanTheAsian A game should be fun AND perform well.
Nice! But no Pikmin 4. That's okay, since Pikmin 3 Deluxe sounds kind of like a Pikmin 4 ish. I never played Pikmin and I guess it's a good time to get into it!
@Crono1973
But a game that's already performing well enough is often criticized for doing the opposite.
@BTB20 I’m still thinking about getting in on the 3DS one of these days... Anyone know if you can still download Guxt on it?
@BlubberWhale The 3DS eshop is still working and they said they aren't taking it down for the foreseeable future. But I just checked and couldn't find Guxt on the 3DS eshop, but the eshop still works.
@BTB20 Thanks, I really appreciate that. I thought I had heard something about it not being available anymore, so thanks for confirming...
Stupid digital gaming... a great remaster gone forever. (Original is still free though, I just done have a PC.)
Guxt for Switch!
