As we're sure you've seen by now, the latest character to be revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is none other than Minecraft's Steve.
As is tradition at this point, the character has been added to the legendary Super Smash Bros. mural, settling down in a nice little spot between Sonic, Daisy, and Pokémon's Greninja. Seriously, what timeline is this?
More details on Steve – including his release date – are set to be revealed tomorrow. Until then, we've put together a gallery of screenshots and his alt costumes should you want to see more.
This roster is insane, and we love it.

He looks like he doesn't belong there, and I absolutely love that.
Steve just looks photoshopped on the mural
He is just calmly sitting there like he doesn't want to fight anyone else.
Salty people incoming. Not me tho, this is my favorite reveal ever. It’s been a meme for so long and now it’s a reality. Hopefully Waluigi and Crash are next!
@mrmememan That's the first thing I though as well.
@WickedUnicarnBoi
With 7 articles and hundreds of comments as proof, all they're doing is helping NintendoLife in the algorithm
@BadlyDrawnDedede He sticks out like a sore thumb, a sore thumb I'm excited about, but a sore thumb none-the-less
He looks photoshopped in. It's absolutely perfect.
I also love how every other character render features fighters in dynamic poses, but Steve and Alex are just standing
Steve was just mining for diamonds and he somehow got here
@Abeedo I actually love just how much they played on that theme in the reveal trailer.
That and Sakurai's great deadpan humor.
"This is impossible, do you know the level of technical wizardry doing this would require???"
"So of course... i told them i'd do it".
You can see he probably relished that challenge and opportunity. And he pulled it off, the madman.
@mrmememan it's the point I guess XD
@HotGoomba why are you such with the craps? Every time you are quoting memes or just having fun, while everyone else is arguing or sulking. I honestly look forward to you in the comments every time. Thank you.
i hope this is the first of a few incredible fighters to come! (not that the others were bad, but, well, it's Steve)
Just after digging his way up
"What am I doing here?"
Ah heck, given time to think about Minecraft in Smash I guess I'm ok with this. My kids will love to play as Alex, Zombie, or Enderman, and I know that in Sakurai-san's hands, the characters will be implemented well and fun to play with.
I just sincerely hope someday soon we will get to lay the smackdown on Steve with Waluigi!
Please oh please if Waluigi got the final slot, there would be epic rejoicing, sincere or not.
@WickedUnicarnBoi No problem man. 😁
Can't wait for the announcer to scream, "ENDERMAAAAAAN"
@Abeedo I agree with you and also love it lol
I’d pay good money for a large printed version of this mural when it’s complete. It’d look so sick on a wall.
@WickedUnicarnBoi eh people who are salty about it should at least realize that this is huge and just because they don't like a genre doesn't mean it isnt totally hype and awesome. Also most people are overjoyed with the pick minecraft fan or not. I would say he is a contender for the most hyped character in dlc. Maybe banjo and joker are more hype for the community but again this one might take the cake. Although in going to be honest most hype characters to be introduced in this game are easily the Belmont's gaming legends howd it take so long lol (prob licsence issues).
The "How did we get here?" Achievement fits perfectly here.
This makes me wonder what incredible collabs with Microsoft Nintendo has up their sleeve...
@Ghostchip This is beyond historic. Banjo had a very established history with Nintendo as his two best outings were on the N64 and while he is a Microsoft IP it just made sense for the two parties to make a deal (for Nintendo it allows them to celebrate their history with Rareware and please fans and for Microsoft, it helps keep the IP in public view for if they decide to do a new game). Steve/Alex and Minecraft have a deep association with Microsoft as Minecraft is mostly played on Windows PC and Xbox. When you think Minecraft you think Microsoft products.
It makes you wonder what the future is between these two companies as we are inching closer to the future of Mario and Master Chief shaking hands... okay maybe not that close, but it is more believable now than it was just a few years ago.
Though now that Microsoft has two reps in Smash I kinda feel bad for Sony fans. It be nice to see maybe even Jak and Daxter or even Crash (due to his association with the PSOne). Though knowing Sony they'd be way less willing than Microsoft to play ball with Nintendo.
@Wexter I feel the big sony one is joker I mean its third party but an huge exclusive (it literally moves consoles and I'm literally getting a ps5 digital for p5r, and other ps4 games I missed as well as the new games) also cloud. He has had a similar history as minecraft: a huge sony rep that is associated with ps even though it now has nintendo ports. Also yes sony is like that lol
@Wexter I don't think Master Chief is likely at all at this point
I think Microsoft draws the line at characters who are specifically created by them in house and not from studios that they acquired after a few games released.
I think the next step for Microsoft representation will be a Bethesda character like Dragonborn or DOOM Slayer. Especially given Zenimax is still going to be publishing games independently and Microsoft is letting them remain autonomous after the acquisition, much like SEGA's relationship with Atlus after they acquired them.
I also definitely don't see Sony being nearly as lenient with including characters from their consoles in games from a rival console manufacturer, despite their very vocal respect for the competition this past gen.
At most, we're getting third parties who have been commonly associated with Sony platforms like Snake, Cloud and Joker
Steve sitting there wondering if he can play Smash on Peaceful.
@Ghostchip Guess that is fair I was thinking more Sony-owned (excluding Crash). As Joker does have two games on Nintendo systems and Cloud was more a Final Fantasy rep which does have a long history on Nintendo systems and his game is now on the Switch so... But, that is probably the closest we will get to a pure Sony rep.
@TheFrenchiestFry I'm thinking so as well. But, Phil Spencer has not ruled out Cheif either and I think his goal with Xbox will be making it more a multi-platform spanning service as with xCloud, Game Pass, Xbox Live and Xbox Series, and MS games are now sold on Steam too, so I think he wants to get Xbox as viewable as possible. But, I don't see it happening in the near future.
Though Doom Slayer seems to be the most logical pick to come out as a Microsoft rep. Doom seems to be staying on Nintendo platforms and is a classic character. The only concern would be how to implement him without increasing the age rating of Smash.
And for sure... I do not see Sony ever playing nice with Nintendo enough to make that happen at all.
@Wexter I see Game Pass as multiplatform in the sense that it'll be accessible to people on PC and smart devices through xCloud. MS are still a hardware manufacturer and will probably see the detriment in putting something like xCloud on Switch or PS5 knowing how badly it'll negate the need to own any of their Xbox ecosystem products, so I don't see that happening.
I also think DOOM has enough over the top weapons outside stuff like the Super Shotgun that can definitely be incorporated into his moveset without the gore factor, like the Balista, or Plasma Rifle or the Rocket Launcher
He looks hella outta place. And its amazing
@TheFrenchiestFry I think it might be more a long term goal As I don't see xCloud on Switch or PS5 negatively impacting Microsoft as I see xCloud and Game Pass being more profitable for them in the long run. The drawback would be negating third party sales on Switch and PS5 as it would harm Sony's and Nintendo's cut of third party sales.
It is more Sony and Nintendo not wanting either service as it can harm their bottom line. Companies don't tend to make a profit on hardware, they make a profit off the software sold for their hardware. This is why I think Microsoft has been laxer with their exclusives like Ori, Minecraft, Cuphead etc to be on Nintendo systems and selling their PC games on Steam. That and I see them really not pushing too many Bethesda published games as Xbox exclusive. I think Phil Spencer wants to take Microsoft's PC successes and push those strategies into the gaming space where it is less closed off hardware and more Xbox as a brand on all platforms and their hardware is there to have a more tailored Xbox experience.
The Doom Slayer would be so sick!!!! He is my choice with the second one being Dragonborn/Elder Scrolls heroes.
@Wexter holding out for crash for sure! Maybe tomb raider but I doubt it
@Wexter Well the thing is, Minecraft was already multiplatform when Microsoft bought Mojang. I'm pretty sure both the PS3/360 versions were already out by then and the PS4/Vita versions were around the corner, so it'd make sense for them to continue developing for other systems
Cuphead also isn't actually first party. Microsoft just has publishing rights to it but it is third party, hence why it's also on PS4 now in addition to being on a slew of PC-based platforms like Steam and MacOS
Steam is also an opportunity for Microsoft to leverage the massive PC install base given the games they develop require an OS they wholly own in order to run them, so Steam is just as much part of the Xbox ecosystem as Windows is, and they go hand in hand
Is Alex a costume or an echo fighter?
@Wexter I know this may not be anyone's top pick, but if a Sony rep could get in, I think it should be Kratos.
Crash Bandicoot has not really been a first-party character for Sony since the PS1 era and Jak is just not well-known today.
But I kinda think of Kratos as the mascot of the Playstation with maybe Nathan Drake being the only other one who comes close.
Plus, he could be interesting from a gameplay point of view thanks to his Blades. I'm not even worried about them toning him down for a T rated game since he's appeared in a Soul Calibur game as well as Playstation All-Stars.
If they wanted to play it safe, they could go with the Celtic era Kratos.
I dunno, when I think of Playstation first-party the first thing that pops into my mind is God of War and Kratos.
With all the weapons, magic, and cool stuff Kratos gets over the course of his games, I would love to see someone like him in the hands of Sakurai and his team. I think he would be one hell of a fighter thanks to Sakurai's magic.
@WickedUnicarnBoi it really makes sense for Minecraft to be added. It’s been popular for years now. I never got into it, but my kids certainly enjoy it!
#Crash4Smash pls it even rhymes
@Savino clever comment
@TheFrenchiestFry I enjoy how they are too artistically and graphically unique to be substantially altered so they look exactly as they do in their game
Third comment in a row, i know, but you can see the angry people are starting to fade out of the discussion already a day in, thank goodness
@Arkay dang now i wish that was the trailer name
@Caryslan I feel like the "not well known to people" argument is kind of irrelevant in Smash picks today. Steve definitely isn't your average icon, but there are a good few people who don't know anything about characters like Richter, Joker, Cloud, Snake, Pit during the Brawl days, or even Captain Falcon and Ness, who were part of the original 12.
If Jak were to hypothetically make a comeback, Smash would be a great avenue to start. But you know, Sony.
Best dlc ever
@WickedUnicarnBoi We can hope.
@Christofu missed opportunity!
@ReikoMortis That's fair. I mean, I love minecraft but i understand this dlc was made for a younger demographic, high schoolers such as myself having nostalgia, and young children getting the obsession with it that my generation once had. I feel as though most DLC so far has been either for Millenial/Gen Xers with things like banjo and terry, or for marketing/specific fanbases being hero, byleth, and min min, so this is the first DLC that has felt targeted at people like me I guess, although the other DLC has been amazing, heck it convinced me to try dragon quest and gain an interest in FF/KOF. Now that I've gotten Steve though, I hope they add more to appeal to Niches and older demographics, like Crash and Dante
@Dalrint costume; check the website or the gallery mentioned in the article
The mural blows my mind everytime I see it. Can't wait till its full so I can buy a huge print of it.
@thesilverbrick : yip. Me three!
In fact, I don’t like smash bros myself, but I’ll happily pay to have the pic on my wall
Nintendo, Sega, SNK, and Microsoft all in one place.
Your move, Sony.
@Xiovanni Bungie did create Halo, but as of right now Microsoft owns the IP and characters, and the games now are developed in house at 343 Industries. I imagine they're honoring the PS5 exclusivity agreement given they didn't want to burn any more money than they already spent to acquire Zenimax just to get those games away from the contracts for that agreement.
@Mr_Persona Villager’s pretty calm, but we all know the truth. We know he’s been waiting to eviscerate everyone.
Apparently if you’re going to be emotionless and don’t want to be creepy with an axe... make sure to .pick. wisely.
Imagine being a kid in the early 00's and being told that Mario, Sonic, Solid Snake, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Simon Belmont and Ryu would be in one fighting game. Imagine in 2010 being told that Minecraft Steve would be in that roster.
Please, please, PLEASE make this banner available for sale once all the DLC is complete, Nintendo.
@Arkay
"I knew I should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque..."
This is the biggest Smash inclusion since Sonic and Snake. I love out of place he looks.
@Abeedo Especially as they worked around with that fact by making him look like Bugs Bunny who just digged up at the wrongest of places xD
@SteveDaSteve simply beautiful.
Lame and embarrassing.
Sakurai didn't even want this
