Before EA's annual FIFA releases, there was a Nintendo title known as Soccer. It didn't include card packs, online play, or even in-game ads - instead it was a simple but "exciting" take on the beautiful game starring a bunch of international teams.
This week the classic football game joins Hamster Corp's Arcade Archives collection for $7.99 / £6.29 (or your regional equivalent). It supports up to two players and, as usual, includes all the modern extras.
"SOCCER" is a sports game released by Nintendo in 1985. Play matches against the CPU in single player mode or another player in 2-player mode. Try polishing your skills in single player, then take on friends and family! Enjoy simple, but exciting gameplay in the father of all soccer games!
The "Arcade Archives" series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces.
Players can change various game settings such as game difficulty, and also reproduce the atmosphere of arcade display settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other from all over the world with their high scores.
Please enjoy the masterpiece that built a generation for video games.
Alternatively, if you don't want to fork out for this, you can always go with the version available on Nintendo's Switch Online NES service. Or, if you prefer the American take on football, Tecmo Bowl might be worth checking out.
Will you be adding Soccer to your Switch HOME Menu? Kick-off in the comments section down below.

I didn't know there was an arcade version of this game. It has to be one of the worst Nintendo games from that era, but I love having these arcade versions, so I probably end up buying it.
What's a FIFA 21 again?
Wasn't there a version with different fields to play on? Like snow, sand or even one with rocks?
I have Virtual Soccer on the Super Nintendo, i can rename every Player, who needs Fifa
Borrowed it once to a Friend, he "updated" Argentina but had some tipping Errors, so there was Madona in the Field... The Voice of God?
Garbage, now in 4k
Ah that nice brown UI
When you're done FIFAing like it's still 2019, take a break and FIFA like it's 1985.
I see FIFA 2022 has leaked! Oh wait..
I’ve been genuinely surprised to see FIFA... I hesitate to say 21, but anyway, FIFA 21 riding so high on the eShop! I think it should have launched at around £29.99 considering it’s essentially, what, a three year old game on Switch?
@AmplifyMJ #3 in europe right now.
Reality is that casual gamers don't know or don't care. They probably got a Switch recently and just bought the newest FIFA. (And probably be fine with what they got)
@Yanina you’re exactly right, and yes they will be fine with it! It annoys me EA are taking advantage of them in my opinion, and they deserve better. But so long as they enjoy the game that’s the main thing I guess.
@Yanina I know it sounds weird, but I take a small comfort from it only being #3. Usually FIFAs go straight to 1 for a few weeks, and I bet it’s doing that on the other consoles.
But if it dropped off completely, that’s EA’s “it doesn’t sell on Switch” argument. So #3 is probably enough to say “yes it sells, but not as well as it should do” which should hopefully get them to pull their fingers out.
I haven't been able to find the differences between this release and the NES one. I can't even seem to find which one came first. That's weird, because I could with all the other releases of this kind, like Golf, Tennis, Pinball...
Does anybody know what the differences are? I won't probably be buying this one, but I'm curious.
I used to play Konami's soccer on MSX, which looks a lot like this game. Who inspired who?
Sensible Soccer on the Mega Drive is more my jam
@Yanina yeah, it's exactly that. And I'm one of those people. I only got my switch in May and I wanted a good footy game, so I just automatically got fifa 20. And I just like to play myself, a CL campaign as one of the smaller teams or a league 2 season as Newport County, something like that. I'm fully satisfied with my purchase, it's decent.
But I definitely would have just got fifa 18 for cheaper if I'd known about all this lazy reskin business. I'm not bothered at all about having all the latest kits. I feel slightly guilty for going in blind and playing a part in feeding the demand that keeps this happening. Oh well, at least I know better now.
Super Soccer Blast is worth a look. Super simple, but good fun.
@Bunkerneath I was playing that version yesterday! I wish they would port SWOS to Switch. I've got it for Xbone, but it would suit Switch perfectly.
These ACA releases have been really lame lately. Been a long time since I bought one.
I'm sure EA are considering dropping support now that they don't have exclusive rights to sports games on the system.
@EVIL-C , no its a DLC for Fifa 21 Switch version
I'm going to patiently waiting for SNES International Superstar Soccer Deluxe to arrive on Switch online.
I may be waiting a bit...
@mazzel That's Nintendo World Cup, a much more fun game
@Vivid_viking ah man that was fun. The scenario games were magic. Only slight criticism is once you got the hang of it, it was too easy. It was game over for everyone as soon as you learned the behind the back over the head flick, defender always jumped for it so you guaranteed could beat everyone.
Why would it be the father of all football games? There were others before this. And this is terrible.
@KevTastic84 Thx!
Orange v red looks like a bit of an ordeal
@Papichulo First for a ninte do switch game
@Silly_G I remember one of the earliest NES fansites I had seen on the internet reported of a bootleg NES "FIFA '97", and they were like "who would release a game with graphics like this in 1997?" as well as that, who would, in 1997, release a game with "West Germany" as a team?
(it was actually just a title hack of a Tecmo soccer game released in JP/PAL in 1990, I think. Tecmo World Cup, I think? It was not the almost-indentical titled RPG soccer game they made.)
@Moroboshi876 I think that "PTS" indicator at the top is something only in the arcade version (and I assume what the leaderboard is).
I do remember a streamer who played all the streamable games in MAME once played some baseball game with a score system he called "Bouns difficiency" (as a meme) where every action you make adds score, like I think getting on base or hitting a homerun (and similarly subtracts it when the CPU does it) and you game over if you go into the negative.
"Soccer" isn't a good NES game. It's probably the worst soccer game on the NES. If you want a good soccer NES game, the closest you can get is "Konami Hyper Soccer", but even "Kick Off" and "Goal" are better than "Soccer". Actually you'd be better off playing "Tecmo World Cup 93" on the Sega Master System. The NES is much better than the SMS for sport games in general, but when it comes to soccer games, the NES falls short. The SMS also has "Sensible Soccer" which is pretty good as well.
@JayJ it's been brutal releases since Sunset Riders. And it is making the wait for Raiden feel like an eternity.
You'd be hard pressed to find just one Soccer game from ~1985 that is better than this!
If you find one, tell me.
