Monster Hunter Rise isn't the only new Monster Hunter entry the Switch is getting in 2021 – Capcom has revealed that portable spin-off Monster Hunter Stories is getting a Switch-based sequel named Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin, too.
Adopting the same cut art style seen in the 3DS original, Monster Hunter Stories 2 will feature a strong narrative focus, and will presumably retain the simplistic RPG mechanics the sub-series is known for. Here's a snippet from the official PR blurb:
MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2: Wings of Ruin: Currently in development, MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2: Wings of Ruin puts players in the role of a Monster Rider who befriends iconic monsters from the Monster Hunter series as they embark on epic adventures together. More information about this story-based role-playing game coming to Nintendo Switch in summer 2021 will be revealed in the future.
It's due for launch in Summer 2021, and will offer some form of connectivity with Monster Hunter Rise. For more details on the game, check out the timestamped video of the Monster Hunter Direct above (which includes the announcement trailer).

Oh well that's pretty cool
Looks interesting!
I'm interested as long as long as you don't need to play the first one before it, as I skipped that but this looks pretty good.
Capcom ❤️ Switch
Finally a good monster rising game on Switch.
@Razer Then you are not up to snuff buddy
First game was my favourite on the 3DS and was very underrated and overlooked. I can't describe how happy I am because of this reveal.
Will this be exclusive to Switch?
@Razer "people are just desperate for Capcom to do something, anything on the Switch that they'll start a rumour just to see it get talked about."
Boy, you must feel stupid now.
@Yanina oh come on, the first was a shoddy Pokémon ripoff lol.
Holy ***** I've never been more happy to be wrong! Monster Hunter Rise looks fantastic! Day one
@Preposterous why? You call this something? Lol the first game was whack.
Easily one of the worst in the series. By far.
Why don't you admit, this feels like a second rate version of the main game you really want. But won't get lol.
Finally a good partner showcase
I love this more than the mainline series, so really excited about this!
I quickly recognized the character design style and i assumed it might be Monster Hunter Stories 2 and it was correct. 😀
Yay, a new choice for me.
@Razer All this talk about Capcom hating Switch and we just got two new MH titles for the console.
Monster Hunter Stories was better than the last 3 generations of Pokemon games, so that's great news.
@Razer But there was two Monster Hunter games announced, this and a proper one...
@Razer
Ooh, i was surprised and excited by MHS 2.
@Razer You do realise we also got Monster Hunter Rise - a new entry in the main series - announced for March 2021, right? We aren't just getting Stories 2.
Best Pokemon game since Sword and Shield...😏 I kid, but I seriously loved the first one. Thank you Capcom.
I'm honestly more excited for Stories 2 than Rise. I loved the first Stories game and after Pokémon Sword and Shield, I can't wait to play a good Pokémon style game. Looking forward to riding on my favorite good boy Zinogre next summer
Now this looks like its made from the ground up for the switch. THIS I will buy, Capcom! my first Monster Hunter game.
@Razer I usually don't care about other opinions, but your comment is wrong in every way. They gave both a new main entry and spin-off and the spin-off isn't similar to Pokemon at all. Because of people like you, Pokemon can't have competition since anything remotely similar to character collecting is labeled a copy. Also, I love Pokemon but it was miles better than all Pokemon games on the 3DS.
The question is, are they exclusive? I didn't see anyone mention it during the Direct, neither on the tweets. You know how this goes, when something is exclusive they make sure you know it in big capital letters.
That was an incredible Direct Mini.
Slowly but certainly we’re getting to see the game franchises of two systems getting combined.
Last year, Pokemon and Links Awakening. Start of this year, Animal Crossing. Recently, Shin Megami Tensei and now Monster Hunter, Rune Factory and Disgaea.
Good job, Nintendo.
Edit: ah, and Fire Emblem. How could i forget my goty!
@IronMan30 it sure was from now on, I’ll look forward to these partner showcases. Because big shadow drops apparantly also happen!
This looks great!
I'm so hyped for this!
Awesome!... I loved monster Hunter Stories (There is also an HD version on iPhone)
Hope it keeps the turn base combat! This is day 1.
@Razer how is it a Pokémon rip-off? Stories was nothing like Pokémon besides featuring a child who befriends monsters and being turn based (even then their combat was entirely different).
Best news from the Direct, imo. And it's been a really good one.
I can't wait to put my hands on it!
I really enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS, having found the main series a little inaccessible.
Loved the first one day one buy for me.
Day 1 for both MH Rise and MH Stories 2. Next years line up is looking great!
@Akurusu Idk but it better not come to phones with more updates and sh*t.
Never been a big MH fan but the Stories spin-off was much more my pace so I’m SUPER excited to see MHS2 coming to Switch. I wish this was dropping first. Going to be a long wait until summer ‘21 (good thing there will be plenty to play until then).
I’M MORE EXCITED FOR STORIES 2 THEN RISE
amiibo
The artstyle of Stories has transitioned incredibly well to Switch.
I'm a big fan of mainline Monster Hunter series, but I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed the first spinoff on the 3DS. The story was at times childish, with an okay ending, but the WW reminiscing graphics were perfect
I'll certainly be giving this a look. Monster Hunter Stories is what I consider an underrated 3DS game. I found the plot rather generic - though many games aimed at a younger audience are guilty of this - but the exploration, monster collecting, gene customization, and art style are all more than worth experiencing.
@Razer it was a super fun Pokémon rip off.
I do love the first game so will definitely play this one.
Tales of the Monster Hunter's Mask of the Wild might be my most anticipated game at this moment. It really looks appealing!
Really good news. Loved Monster Hunter Stories 1 (my son AND I). This looks really promising. Probably an insta-buy tbh.
I hope they release the first one on switch! I have it in my wishlist for the 3ds but I haven't decided to buy it yet...
@Razer,
Surely a Pokemon rip off and a brand new entry to the Monster hunter series on the Switch, maybe watch the video more carefully next time.
I just want Disney Afternoon Collection for Switch from Capcom...is that so much to ask?!
As long as it has the amazing character creator I am all in this loved the first one even tough we did not get the updates like Japan did.
So, does this mean that the U.S will finally get the MH Story Amiibo that were exclusive to Japan?
This Partner Direct basically became Monster Hunter Direct (and Co.). What an incredible surprise! Capcom really is knocking this generation out of the park and getting back to form. Stories 2 and Rise both look like two of the most beautiful third-party titles available on Switch, only rivaled really by Dragon Quest XIS, which was fittingly another game made from the ground up for Switch.
Looks like a certain Capcom hater is miserably eating their own words and digging their feet in further, moving goal posts and stubbornly resisting defeat. Oh the burden it must be to need to hate something, no matter how illogical!
@rjejr That reminds me that they're Monster Hunter Rise amiibo. Makes me wonder if Stories 2 will get MHStories amiibo, or if they'll still give you general goodies in Stories2 for using them. Most likely the latter since Stories is more of a niche spinoff.
Who knows though! Maybe if Stories 2 sells well enough it could become a major branch off for the franchise!
looks coolllllllllllllllllllll
@Ulysses As far as I can tell - and admittedly I didn't look excessively hardy - the MHS amiibo never released in the US. I looked for them for awhile, bought my son a Rathalos Funko Pop instead.
But I would buy a few of these if they released in the US.
I don't think MHS will get any new ones though, 3 for Rise about covers it, and they did say there would be some crossover between the 2 games.
Summer 2021 is still basically a year away - has any game announced a year in advance the past 5 years not been delayed? - so they have time to figure out the amiibo situation. I think Nintendo is still a bit behind on the SSBU DLC amiibo, though we have pre-ordered Joker at Best Buy to pick up Oct 2 they are slowly getting there. Announcing the actual next DLC character would be nice too, so far it's been $30 just for 1 of the 6.
THIS MEANS I'M GOING TO SEE AVINIA IN HD!YES!
