Many of us are still reeling from the sad news of actor Chadwick Boseman's passing last week at the age of 43. There's been an online outpouring of tributes from fans and friends paying their respects to the star of Marvel's Black Panther, and if you are a fan of Fortnite, you might notice a newly-installed statue in the game named Panther’s Prowl.
While it would be easy to assume that developer Epic Games are just jumping on the grief bandwagon, this is apparently not the case. The monument has been planned for some time, as confirmed to Kotaku by an Epic Games spokesperson:
As with the rest of the world, we were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of actor Chadwick Boseman,” the spokesperson said. “The Black Panther monument arrived this morning as part of a previously-planned narrative for the new Chapter 2 - Season 4 season.
If you are interested in checking out the monument for yourself, it can be found to the left of Misty Meadows.

Sad indeed. He was great as the Black Panther!
I’m suprised he hid it so well for this long.
Supposedly he already was really sick and weak while doing avengers and black panther.
Also it reportedly was the reason he visited the children with cancer so much at saint judes, because secretly he was there for his own treatment.
May he rest in peace and condolences to his friends and family.
@Friscobay 100% agree, very difficult to tell the difference.
@Slowdive exactly. This is so wrong and pathetic.
@Lordplops aye, having a tribute to a recently-deceased, well-loved actor who was part of the Marvel Universe that the current crossover is of seems fair enough to me. Would seem odder not to, really.
I still can't believe we lost Black Mamba and Black Panther in the same year.
He was great as the Black Panther & a quality actor generally. I think he did 7 films whilst at Stage III of his cancer & before it moved onto Stage IV. He wil be missed. Embumbay & Wakanda Forever!
So it's not a tribute at all then, it's just a coincidence. Nice clickbait.
Oh fortnite you son of a gun 'm so sad whyyyyyy he was the best black panther to.
Wakanda Forever.
What the heck happened here? I know that this was in the files since the beginning of the season, which was almost a week ago, so this was already planned. Did they know he was going to pass soon? Shrug As a person who has lost family members to cancer, my heart and prayers are with this family and friends. I was never a huge fan of the movie, but he was a really good actor if you can play such a big role with cancer so, Wakanda forever!
Of course it was going to be a coincidence, considering there were leaks that pointed to this. However, at least Epic Games acknowledged the passing of Chadwick Boseman.
I don’t know how I feel about companies paying tribute like this. It feels hollow to me, like they’re acknowledging not out of grief, but because it’s good PR to show support.
Chadwick Boseman was an incredibly important figure in the black community and you lot shouldn’t pretend his life didn’t affect the massive wide scale protests against injustice. I wouldn’t say this statue is going too far but it’s important to note that Black Panther symbolises a lot more than just a superhero.
@nessisonett This is where I'm going to highlight another problem with pop-culture. When did we start associating social movements and idolizing fictional characters over real-life individuals who fought for equality? Tying so much of your cultural identity to a fictional character like Black Panther is actually giving control of your culture to a multi-billion dollar corporation who will exploit it for profit (they do and they have made movies purely to take advantage of a social climate to make money).
I just maybe miss the days when people like Martin Luther King Jr were framed over my teacher's desk and we'd listen to the speech "I Have a Dream" was taught to children.
@Wexter It’s not about that. Black Panther proved that black voices could be heard in the mainstream. It was a movie by Black people, for Black people and yet it made over a billion dollars. So many black directors have come out and said that their movies were shot down by production companies because nobody wanted to see a black movie. This proved that their culture could be the centre of attention.
@nessisonett I know that. But, I was also highlighting another issue I've seen especially with young people. It's awesome to see black-made films get recognition and respect, but that is also focused on that medium.
But, we have to understand there is a difference between how Black Panther proved that African American Films can be profitable and watched and enjoyed by a mainstream audience and Black Panther a fictional character being placed on the same pedestal as MLK which I have seen young people do. Don't let corporations control your culture is all I'm warning people about with that mentality.
@Wexter That’s true enough, I guess. The problem is that real life heroes are humans who don’t capture the imagination like fictional ones. I’m not saying that MLK should be fighting baddies with laser vision but it’s hard to drive home the importance of what he did to kids. This is why his work, and wider civil rights movement, should be covered in every single school.
@nessisonett Indeed, indeed. Not saying it's bad to have kids love fictional characters. But, we should also learn how to teach kids that people like MLK, Gandhi and other civil rights leaders were very much cool! I had one teacher growing up in elementary school who caught all of our attention by telling stories of MLK and we were awestruck! We need more of that in the younger generation if we plan on finally putting to bed bigotry, racism and hate against all cultures, peoples, races and creeds.
That and some badass superheroes never did hurt anyone either!
EDIT: I hope someday as well we get to add names like Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Nathan Law to that list of heroes of Civil Rights. God bless those brave men and women in Hong Kong.
I was pretty shocked when I heard the news. He was so young and movie magic made him look so healthy.
@Wexter He was pretty great in 42. Never saw a bad performance from the guy. Great actor, great person, and a great loss. RIP Chadwick Boseman
Superhero movies aren't respectable films anyway. It's the porn of cinema.
@Snesionetty list of Top Ten Respectable Films! GO!
@Friscobay please stop that. You don't need to post about politics here.
I've removed the entire discussion. Let's please not bring it up again.
While my comment was deleted as it was pointed at a particular individual who made an account for the sole purpose of espousing racist rhetoric about apes, it’s worth repeating. This site doesn’t need racism or bigotry of any kind. This is a site that is open to everyone and having somebody make such awful comments brings down the reputation of what is for the most part, a decent site about Nintendo. If you’re going to type out words here that you would never think about saying in public, perhaps think it over again.
Well I’m still sick of private businesses using social movements to promote their products. How Is that different from electronic, sport and clothing brands selling pride related items ?
@Friscobay I'm sure you can find the correct medium for you to voice your frustrations on that subject.
It's just not here.
@Eel not a frustration and definitely not in plural. A commentary to the article.
