When Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise launched one of the glaring issues was the abysmal frame rate.
The game's director even said he intended to sort it out, and the publisher Rising Star followed this up by confirming the development team was working on patches to improve the overall performance.
The good news is the latest patch for the game (version 1.0.3) seems to have done this, and also adds an inverted camera option - according to the developer TOYBOX. Here's a before and after of the frame rate, courtesy of our very own Gavin Lane:
If you're still not sure what all the fuss about, take a look at Digital Foundry's technical analysis of the launch version. The performance in the open-world section of the game (see above) was so "atrocious" on release, the frame rate was able to drop all the way down to 4-2fps.

I just can't believe that in this day and age that a developer needs to be nagged into fixing shoddy products, I mean really!!! Everybody else on the planet needs to exchange various things for money and this developer doesn't seem to be affected by that concept. Surreal.
Improved but still not good enough to warrant playing the game. I'll buy it when it has a steady 30 or close enough to that.
Oh wow, how is something like that even allowed?
The game industry is just a step before 8K a d 120 fps, and this game has a 10 fps!!!
Please imprison this fool developer...
Wow looks like a ps2 game and the framerate is shocking, yet other games like witcher 3 and skyrim are running much better. Give this ip to another developer
The fix improve it up to be as laggy as the first game XD
But given that part of the charm of this serie is how messy the game is on the technical side, I feel a bit bad I still didn't have the chance to play it and that I'll eventually have to do it on a patched version.
I'm sure they will get it to a playable state soon but watching either one of those videos hurts my eyes a bit.
While that's actually a pretty big improvement, it's still really bad. The initial release was just so bad that it's beyond salvation and I don't think any number of patches will result in the game being in what I would consider to be a playable state.
You do you Swery.
@Scirocco7 Imprison?
Well atleast it is in the right direction.
Not good enough, games like Burnout Paradise can run 60 FPS with an entire city being rendered around you, there is no excuse for poor performance in this game
Night and day, looks playable now
I thought people said the shoddy stuff was “part of the charm” and “made the game” - those “real fans” have been sold out.
@Scirocco7 Only 2080Ti can handle 4k at around 60fps on ultra settings in most modern games.
Saying that we are a step away from 8k in 120 fps is a bit of a stretch.
Even this generation most console games ran around 30fps and not always at a native 4k resolution.
Nothing smooth about this patch, by the way things are going it will require 15 more patches in other to run at solid 30FPS. Let's hope the developers don't give up before then😒...
Still planning to buy the game at some point, patches or no patches. The world needs more quirky things, preferably inspired by Twin Peaks.
It's totally possible I'll play two hours and get too frustrated to continue, but devs like this are the guys we need to support. Maybe his next game will be technically better as he learns the craft and can afford to put more money into proper development, but if DP2 doesn't make any money and Swery has to focus on his day job and not make any more games, we'll never know what he might have made.
People always talk about video games as art, but when something like this comes out it's clear that most people want something less like art and more like product.
It's funny how all commenters here seem to think this game is about technical brilliance. It's not.
@khululy ps5 and xbox series x will run on 120 fps 4k. Thats what engineers says...
lol At least it looks playable now. I've played and enjoyed some games with judder before (looking at you, Senran Kagura Burst), but the framerate in that second video made me want to puke. It's SO bad.
Isn't there a 2nd patch to come?
I'm a framerate snob, but typically will give a pass to games if the framerate drops are in parts of the game where there's no risk of failure. As far as I know, the framerate drops aren't occurring in those portions of the game. The original framerate was abysmal and I'd hoped it would be improved (although intrusive, detracting jank is a Deadly Premonition staple) the improvements seem to put it on par with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask in terms of framerate.
DP's success, to me, has always been in putting its budget into the things that actually matter to the game, resulting in a great game with major technical issues instead of a mediocre game with few technical issues. Try the original if these games interest you and you'll probably realize the framerate is not going to significantly detract from the sequel now. I dismount my mental pommel horse.
This improvement is still not even close to be an actually good investment, for such a high price, you expect the game to have perfect 30 frames, and with the visuals looking this bad, this should honestly run on 60 frames per second, very bad execution on this
@SomeBitTripFan This puts it into a new perspective for me
Game looks just about playable now, so if you are a massive fan of the first and this is eventually in a half price sale it might be worth a punt...
@TechaNinja I hope so, and a third patch
@BANJO yeah, it might be just about playable... almost. It would detract heavily from the experience though. I wouldn't buy it at half price though, that's 30 dollars. You can buy games that work for 30 dollars.
@Moistnado Very true, I'm not a fan so I won't be... I was just trying to put a positive spin on the progress, there is obviously still great progress to be made however 🤣
The game is a lot of fun with a great story and charming characters. People being so hung up on technology is why we can't have unique things.
Anyway, i'm glad it has options to invert the y-axis controls now, that was definitely an oversight.
The fact that it was released in such an abysmal state speaks volumes of the development team and their lunacy. This game should have been properly polished and refined from the get go.
As they stand now- I’m not going to give them a dime until they shape up and hold their projects to a higher standard.
What they did with the Switch release is appalling.
@BakaKnight what are you even talking about? Its not part of the charm of the series, the 360 original played perfectly fine and its just the ports since that haven't been up to standard. They launched this in an abysmal state that should never have happened, its not a feature
@Scirocco7 - 120 FPS in our 240 FPS world?!
Outta here with that low expectation!
@carlos82 My bad, my only experience was with the switch port of the first game, I didn't clarify that well enough.
Still all the bugs, glitches and the overall mess it was, I don't know how much was added and how much was carried over, but it was stunning in a way. They fitted very well with the game's tone, so much so I thought they were present in the original game, and they sincerely made the experience more enjoyable for me.
Not to say I like broken games, far from it, but Deadly Premonition Origins was a very enjoyable exception for me.
Sit back everyone, Nintendo Life users are whining again.
@Scirocco7 your still wrong though. Just because a device(new consoles) that is hdmi 2.1 compliant aka allowing 4k @ 120 doesnt mean those consoles will hit that target. Unless your buying an oled tv now or waiting for hdmi 2.1 to be the new norm for budget displays within the next year your existing tv is not going to do 4k120. So 8k 120 is not a just around the corner thing.
No thanks, it still looks like a PS2 game.
Glad they're at least trying to fix it, hopefully they'll get it to a stable 30 FPS sooner rather than later... still not sure how I'd feel if I was Nintendo and helped back this sequel.
It really is amazing how it is so much improved, yet still runs around 15-20fps with horrible hitches and stuttering. I watched some online let's play stuff though, and it is still something I want to play at some point. It's so damn funny! I hope they keep improving it and that right when I get it and start playing they release a 60fps or at least 30fps patch!
@60frames-please I wouldn't hold my breath on a 60fps patch unless it's on another system in the future. Though 30fps is surely achievable, if they put extra effort into it
Looks a lot better now, but still disappointing how they released it in this state even after Q&A testing. Seems common to 'release now, fix later' these days, luckily we can research before handing over our hard-earned cash!
@SomeBitTripFan
Really? The first game was awful mostly design wise. It was the characters that made it worth it and not gameplay. The action scenes were atrioucly booring.
And i can't believe that people make these statements that ***** framerate is part of the charm with straight face.
The kind of buggy goofiness that Ghost Of Tsushima has can be charming but when you game just runs badly there's no charm in that.
Clunkiness otherhand can work in the right places but first game had plenty of tedious ***** that wasn't funny in any way and it's just slap in the face when the game tries to shrugh it off by making a joke out of it. I think their track record pretty much says it all and it's not really that they deliberately make bad games, it just that they are incapable making good game.
Oh wow, that's the worst video I've seen. I'm not too fussed about frame rate drops - they don't really affect my enjoyment of games much. But I have to say that second video is just awful and I'm going to join in and say a developer should be ashamed of themselves if they thought that was acceptable.
After playing the first game I have this sat on the shelf waiting for me to play it but I'm still only half way through Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition.
Meh....I am typically not hung up on technical details but when a game can't hit at least 30fps mostly consistent I am out.
I got little problems with glitches or even occasional stutters but after watching some gameplay videos I don't feel like paying money to get a headache.
I also really, really don't get the 'part of the charm' thing. I can understand retro graphics, low-poly models, weird voice-acting and so on as part of a games appeal...but saying that single-digit framerate is part of the charm to me sounds like saying watching a movie with the projector shutting off every other minute would be a pleasant experience.
Wasnt the entire point of this sequel make it bad like first one? kinda a room deal.
Next up; let's patch his upper lip.
@Kuruwin "what makes the game great" doesn't refer to gameplay. It's unpolished, but ambitious with its world, sidequests, and small details. Better performance is always a good thing in a vacuum, but also takes a certain amount of resources which can be invested into other parts of the game. I'm not sure what was done to improve the framerate, but it's now at a level that won't significantly detract from the core appeals of the game. And I'd say it's comparable to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, two far more gameplay-oriented games that are near-universally praised and beloved.
DP's mostly able to get away with everything it does through establishing low expectations. Between its reputation and presentation, the audience is never directed to expect polish. It also makes the strong points of the game stand out. I'd argue the strength of those moments, combined with the tone of the game, lets it turn the bad design into a joke at the player's expense, at the very least. The player is also, as a result, in on the joke. Super Paper Mario is a very similar game, in that regard. The hardship or inconvenience can create something interesting out of something that would otherwise bland. What are a few performance issues on top of everything else, especially if they aren't detracting from the highs of the game?
The update made it playable, so I will consider getting it. I didn't get it originally, since slide-show frame rates are irritating, even for someone who doesn't care about graphics. If it's at least around the frame rate of a movie (24 fps) or anime (15+ fps), then I'm fine with it. Single digits are a no go, since that's practically unplayable.
If I spent full price for a piece of crap game, I'd be upset too
Finally got a physical copy at a good price. Was prepared for the worst and that probably colored my experience. Sure some framedrops and low FPS especially in the open world but it’s very playable. Controls during the fights was okay and didn’t get into the way of the experience. I just finished the Episode 1 boss and that was a great experience.
It’s a shame most reviews can’t convey what is great about this game. I guess it’s to hard to write up without massive spoilers. The dialogues, the interesting NPC’s, the pure SWERY weirdness / genius. Mann I couldn’t lay this game down and played for 10 hours straight.
Technically flawed but an unique great experience for SWERY fans.
