As you probably know by now, Rocket League is all set to become a free-to-play experience later this summer. Aside from the obvious price of entry change, this update will also cause various aspects of the game itself to be transformed, including the welcome addition of support for cross-platform progression.
Another feature that will see an overhaul is 'Tournaments', which will soon give players all around the world the opportunity to join automatically scheduled tournaments each day to climb up through the ranks and gain rewards.
Developer Psynoix has detailed all the Tournaments changes in a new blog post, so feel free to give that a read if you want to know everything in excruciating detail. For now, we'll share some of the highlights of the post for you below.
Players will soon be able to sign up for Competitive Tournaments, a new ranked mode within Tournaments that pits you against teams of similar skill to earn rewards. Each region has multiple Competitive Tournaments scheduled each day, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to compete. You can sign up from the revamped Tournaments Menu that shows the daily schedule for your region.
Everyone who makes it out of the First Round of a Tournament will receive new in-game currency called Tournament Credits, and performing well and making it farther in a bracket will earn you more. Tournaments at a higher Rank will grant larger Tournament Credit rewards. For instance, strong Silver Ranked players stand to earn more Tournament Credits if they get pulled into a Gold Rank Tournament, but their competition will be tougher. The Tournament Credit reward is the same for all three team members.
Tournament Credits can be redeemed to get Cups that will grant you a customization item including Wheels, animated Decals, and even Goal Explosions. There are four levels of Cups that become available as you increase your Tournaments Rank. The higher level the Cup, the more often you’ll unlock an item of higher rarity. All Tournament items can have special attributes like Painted or Certified. You can also trade in unwanted items to receive Tournament items of a higher rarity. That even goes for Exotic items, which can be traded up to Black Market!
As we mentioned, further details on Rocket League's Tournaments can be found on the official website, including information on the logistics of each tournament, how players could be banned for abandoning tournaments, and more.
Do you still like to regularly play Rocket League? Think you'll be competing against others in these new tournaments? Tell us below.

It's going free-to-play? Surely that's going to upset everyone that paid for it?
Later this summer? Summer is almost done.
I need to get back into this game, it's actually pretty fun.
@Moon not me. bought the game over 2 years ago and I am close to 1000hours on PC. most balanced multiplayer game ever maybe
@Moon Everyone who bought it will get in-game items to make up for it.
Let me say this: Epic, this is the most obvious feature ever. Why did you not have this before?
@Moon I had it on Switch, now I will be able to play it on PC.
@JokerCK Still over a month left.
@Moon It came out five years ago at $20. We'll get over it.
@Moon I'm fine with it because I bought it a while ago. I felt the price was justified (otherwise, why buy it?) and had no idea it would go F2P eventually. Plus, I've gotten my money's worth out of it.
@Moon Not as upset as we are about them taking our money, killing off the game on our platform then giving it away.
If I had paid, I would still appreciate them making it even more enduring my multiplying its audience. Paying customers will get stuff to stay calm and in the end, if a game goes free I might have played for years already, I wouldn't care at all. I don't care how much or how little any gae I own costs today or what might have gone free to play in the meantime.
Be happy about all the people that get the chance to play it now. People like me ...
my buddy bought the game he's pretty happy about me now being able to play online with him. I mean we just used to play in couch coop, which might be more fun anyways, but still.
I still play Rocket League regularly. I've got 600 hours. It's great.
@Moon Nah, I don't regret paying for Rocket League. I got it on sale for $15 two years ago, which was a steal. It's AAA polish. I thought, how could that game be that good? After trying it, it's physics & mechanics are great. It's a stellar game. There's so much skill progression. It's impressive. I plateaued at 100 hours. Then learned some new stuff, and now I'm at 600 hours. Although, I'm kind of worried free-to-play progression & rewards may be worse. We'll see.
Thank God I just got the Game Pass version lol
@Moon I sold mine about 1 month ago when I heard it was going free to play... lol I just hope the buyer wont regret it lmao.
@Shamrock If you play with cross-platform enabled, the game is very active (Steam alone has an average of 40K). Going F2P may make it even bigger.
I still play around 3-4 hours of Rocket League per week on my Switch, it's a fantastic game and the more people online to play against, the better.
My only complaint is that the experience playing ranked mode is terrible - you wait for 2-3 minutes to join a game, then once it's finished you start waiting again, then the 1-minute post match server timeout boots you back to the menu and you start the 2-3 minute wait again. Casual mode is the only way to have a quality longer gaming session (since you can just keep playing on the same server, or backfill into games in progress), which sucks if you want to rank up.
Who knows, maybe an explosion of players will fix this problem. More servers = shorter waits?
That’s cool but the game takes up like 10 GB and I’m running low on space on my microSD card, so I might need to get a new one before considering getting it
I hope tournaments don’t steal too many players from the regular ranked lists. The way I play is to jump on to ranked for 2 or 3 matches then jump off again I’d never have time for a tournament...
On the other hand free to play might bring more people so lists might be fully than ever.
My region is Oceana (Australia) and I can always get a competitive match easily except at 1am or 2am it’s a bit of a wait.
P.S This game and MK8 deluxe make up 95% of my gaming life. I love then both soooo much!!
