Super Mario Run was a pretty decent leap to smartphones for everyone's favourite gaming plumber, but even the great pulling power of Mario himself couldn't convince every Nintendo fan to give it a go. Perhaps more would have tried it out if a more traditional control setup were available? You know, like the official SNES mouse.
It's probably not the first official Nintendo peripheral you'd think of when picking out a controller for a Mario game, but Niles Mitchell, owner of the Will It Work? YouTube channel, has gone to the effort of hooking up an old Nintendo mouse and seeing how it works with the game.
The setup involves an iPhone, a lightning to USB adaptor, a specialised adaptor which converts the SNES mouse to USB, and of course, the mouse itself. It all works surprisingly well, especially thanks to the fact that Super Mario Run only ever requires one touch of the screen at a time. You may know that the SNES Mouse was a peripheral which launched in the early '90s, primarily to be used alongside Mario Paint. We never thought we'd be talking about Mario Paint twice in one day (if you saw our mouse and keyboard on Switch story earlier, you'll know what we're on about), yet here we are. What a day!
Nice work putting this together, Niles. We quite fancy having a go at Super Mario Run with the SNES Mouse ourselves now.

I never like Super Mario Run to begin with. It had a nice concept, and the online was fun, but it just didn’t suit me at all.
That being said, playing it with a SNES mouse looks very professional.
This is like when people hook up odd controllers to play Dark Souls. My favorite is the guy that beat the entire game using a microphone and voice commands. Absolutely hysterical. Another recent oddity was when someone maxed out their WoW character on a DDR pad.
My phone never had enough open space for me to play this, so I was late. I got an iPad and I love the game. Even tho it is a little light on content, I have enjoyed replaying levels. I think $10 is a fair price.
@rockodoodle Agreed. The funny thing is that if Mario Run was ported to the Switch with exactly the same content but using switch controls instead of touch-screen, fans would call it a bargain for £5 (what I paid for it on offer) or even £10.
Now to use this mouse on Hypnospace Outlaw's mouse and keyboard support.
I would rather use my gamer mouse than a SNES mouse, AND to play a mobile game!??? too much trouble for me!
@JohnnyC I could see how a certain audience would not find this worth $10. An intermediate or advanced gamer would get bored pretty quickly, IMO.
But I am a casual gamer, and I think this was actually made for someone like me. It's a fun little time killer that I can play when I don't have my switch or 3ds.
While obviously Nintendo should focus on its core gaming, I hope they maintain a mobile presence and even add a few games every now and then.

I hated Super Mario Run. That was the first time I have ever had such a negative reaction to a Mario game, and that pains me.
@rockodoodle That's kind of my point though, there's a lot of budget fluff on the eshop for a few pounds. I'd argue Mario Run is better quality than most casual titles, and agree with you that it's far from a core Mario title like Odyssey or Galaxy. However I maintain that it represents good value for a fiver compared to a lot of the other titles you can buy for that price. On the other hand, pop over to rival platforms and you can get the likes of Metal Gear Solid V, the Uncharted games, The Last of Us, older Assassin's Creed games and many others for that price as well, so the question of value for money becomes a lot more subjective depending on what you're looking for. Personally I enjoy Mario Run and the other games listed, but tend to steer clear of freemium titles.
@JohnnyC yeah, I would much rather pay $10 or even $20 and be done with micro transactions....tho I have a few that have been good that I have not spent any $$$ on.
