Remember Eiyuden Chronicle, the spiritual successor to Konami's classic Suikoden series that started generating funds on Kickstarter last month? Well, it's doing pretty well for itself - and by "pretty well", we mean "astronomically well".
With 12 days still to go, the game has become the "most funded video game project" in Japan. At the time of writing it's raised a whopping 327,222,665 yen, which is comfortably over $3 million USD, and that amount continues to rise with each passing moment.
The project has now smashed 24 additional stretch goals and also has the honour of being the ninth most-funded video game Kickstarter of all time. Wow. Yoshitaka Murayama, the creative director behind Eiyuden Chronicle, has shared the following:
“Eiyuden Chronicle is now the single most backed project by Japanese people ever. For this project, I want to take the fans’ passion and put it in the game—that’s how I feel. I’ve seen people on social media saying this is the first Kickstarter they have ever backed and it makes me so happy to see that passion and support.
Anyone in the entertainment business probably feels the same way—they want to make as many people happy as possible. Usually it’s a feeling you get on release day when you sell your game, but with Eiyuden Chronicle, we are able to feel that even at this current phase. And you get to feel it directly from the fans’ voices which, again, is a great feeling. Thanks for all the enthusiasm and support. It really does keep me going. So please join us on this two year journey of developing this game.”
Now, Rabbit & Bear Studios has revealed that it will be adding a 9th additional character to the game through a voting system - bringing the total to 109 - and has also teased a new video planned to be released at the end of the week.
The future's certainly looking bright for this one, whichever Nintendo system it ends up launching for.

Oh yeah, I'm beyond hyped for this.
This is the first game I ever backed, I usually avoid Kickstarter because I've heard too many horror stories.
Well it's good that other people are doing what I cannot do... Screw Kickstarter for dropping visa electron compability, seriously, and not having something like paypal as an alternative either.
Wait, it's coming to the Switch's successor? How do they plan for something like that without knowing anything about it?
Maybe it's wishful thinking of me, but I don't see how this doesn't come out on this Switch as well. If the Switch is nearing, or at, the midpoint of its lifespan wouldn't then that put this game's launch still within the timeframe of this Switch rather than Switch 2 (or whatever the name will be)? Or am I completely messing up my timelines?
@FragRed It’s a fairly safe assumption that Nintendo will release another more powerful console after the Switch. We can say that that console will almost certainly be more powerful than the Xbox One S. So given that the Switch is not powerful enough to run this game but the Xbox One S is. It’s fairly safe to assume that it would be able to be run on Nintendo is next console.
Hey, at least they're honest about it not working on Switch. You don't really get that on Kickstarter nowadays... so it'll be very interesting to watch how it progresses.
I sooo want this game!
@Slowdive I backed Mighty No. 9 and it broke my heart... But I also backed Hyper Light Drifter and just love that game so much. You win some you lose some.
To NintenDoomed there is more to a game then gpu look at Witcher 3 and now Crysis. They both are for current Switch and to say it can't just tells people are hitting the Koolaid to hard. And need to step back and ask Switch success isn't just gpu.
No wonder it raised so much when it hooked sites like this with clickbait...
I've just been reading some backer updates. They have me a little worried. They are going a bit wild on the promises, I hope that they had these prepared in advance and included them in the workload from the start... All sound good, though!
I still say a game of this caliber is possible on Switch, it would be sad if Bravely Default II came out for Switch and looking and running way better than this. You may say but this game is made by a smaller team to that I had to say will this game required next gen hardware whereas Bravely Default II doesn't, big or small they had chosen their path and if this game choose to hit next gen it should feel like next gen.
@bozz The Switch will be 5.5 years old when this is scheduled to release and with the usual 1 year so so delay for kickstarter games we would be looking at late 2023 or 2024 for this to release meaning the Switch would be at the end of a generation at 6.5-7 years old. I'd imagine Switch 2 would be out sometime between March 2023 and March 2024 if I had to guess so if that's the case they will cancel and go to the new hardware is what they are saying.
@Obs Isn't the proposed release date, with the Kickstarter in mind, in 2022? As it's no guarantee that it being a Kickstarter will automatically delay it, I'm kind of going with what they say until I see proof of a delay. Or is every game that's Kickstarted like this?
@retro_player_77 Yeah this should definitely be able to run on switch.
For a second I confused this with Aidyn Chronicles for the N64. Now THERE'S a game that would be a big surprise on Switch.
This game could run on a GameCube. I'm really hopeful about this and I love the Suikoden series, but this game being too taxing for a Switch sounds like BS.
@Pat_trick There could be more going on in the engine than we know about. Porting to the Switch isn't the easiest thing to do for some engines.
@Jokerwolf It's just hard to think that it would be that hard when games like Doom have been ported. Even if there was a slight downgrade it looks possible. But you're right, I'm not a developer so I don't know exactly how it works and it could be very hard
@bozz The planned release is Q4 2022 but in my experience with crowdfunded games expect a year onto of the estimated date
It looks amazing, the only shame is the wait for it to come out
I REALLY want to back this but not if it’s skipping Switch.
More snake oil salesmen. Never back Kickstarter, unless you also don’t mind gambling!
@Supadav03 it will come out to steam. no excuse not to get it.. everyone has PC or computer whatever. So whats your excuse?
@bozz You never know. Jump Force was deemed impossible on Switch and yet it is coming to Switch. Also, Blood Stained creators admitted to being surprised with the Switch reception, which shows the developers did not see Switch as a priority. It is really up to the developers and how much work they want to put in a game.
@Benji80 but Switch had trouble when it came out with Octopath traveler.. could not run @ 60fps and some stuff were adjusted. On PC you can get 60fps and much better settings to make the game even look more beautiful. Switch port has it limits. I don't think you want 30fps for such game. but maybe if they would ran it at 480p on switch maybe for 60fps.. but I don't think anyone is waiting for that. Thanks Switch for the only 4gb ram memory. it's not enough
Staying away from Kickstarter after the Platinum Games / Wonderful 101 / Yetee fiasco. Took months to get the game and paid $12 in customs fees.
@Alucard83 I do not own a computer. My phone IS my computer. I do own a Switch though. As you can see from my avatar, I’m a huge Suikoden fan but I’m not buying a console for one game.
"has the honour of being the ninth most-funded video game Kickstarter of all time. Wow."
I find damning with faint praise to be completely fascinating.
Let's hope the 108 stars continue to align for this potentially wonderful game.
@FragRed the same way im planning to release my game, in 2033, for X-StationU. Foresight.
I cannot wait for the SwitchU.
@kooznim - At least your backing had a product produced.
laments on Cryamore
Ok people, please stop just throwing around ‘better hardware’ and ‘but Witcher 3 and Crysis’ around! If the devs, the people who know a lot more about the game than you do, say that Switch can’t run this then I’d be inclined to believe them! Optimisation is the name of the game here, Crysis and Witcher 3 already had scalable PC versions which gave a jumping off point for the Switch port. This is a small-ish team who will be simultaneously developing multiple versions of the game, instead of outsourcing a Switch port. Sometimes devs just would rather brute force a port through with sheer power than deal with the minefield of making a downgraded port only for people to complain about the graphics.
Looks like Octopath on the Screenshot, which is a good thing! No Kickstarter from a non-EU company for me though, the TW101 wound is still too fresh...
Sorry but just looks like an upgraded Octopath, how it can't run on a switch is unbelieveable. Sounds like they just can't be bother to learn what they did with the Witcher.
Goodness! I'm happy for them, and I'm sure they're happy with themselves too!
@SalvorHardin clickbait. Why is it always the people with no pfp who are total pieces of work?
