Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has just been updated to version 8.1.0. You can view the full patch notes in our other post. The highlight, as already noted, is the new smaller-size battlefield stage. The online experience has also been improved.
Although the patch notes don't really go into detail about this stage, game director Masahiro Sakurai has provided some extra information about this level and the update in general, which has been translated by PushDustin over on Twitter:
Its out of nowhere, but Small Battlefield has been added! When fighting 1 on 1, Battlefield feels a bit wide, and Final Destination feels like it's lacking. So we came up with a middle option with two platforms...
We werent able to make it an option for all stages, so it's a single stage that you can select. At the same time we widen the music selection for the Battlefield type stages, making all the music available! Pick your favorite song from more than 1000 tracks!
By the way, we made some improvements to the online experience for 1v1. Please check it out.

I actually like this layout a lot more than the regular Battlefield.
Too bad it's not available in other visual styles like the regular one, but I guess the expanded music options help a bit.
The music selection is definitely the highlight here. This new stage layout really isn’t anything special, but I can’t complain about more free content.
They made a good call on the music tracks. It's much easier to do that than to make a Small Battlefield variant for every other stage.

@Yanina Definitely agree, Moral Kombat is better than Mario Kart, except for Mario Kart 64. That's actually a good one.

Yep, having the likes of Apex of the World, Battle Hymn of the Soul, Bowser Castle and many more in Final Destination makes the whole crossover thing shine, I do enjoy this new option.
Battlefield is the worst stage to play on against (any of the) Link mains.
Perhaps, it's my play-style but, in general, I perform terribly on this stage but I do alright on Pokemon Stadium so this is kinda a neat addition.
Things are not going as planned for the Smash Bros team. They planned a roll-out of updates at the beginning of the year, but COVID-19 likely has forced them to change it. This update reeks of intentional character addition given the timing, but for some reaon it seems delayed.
Pretty random, not complaining though! I hope we get more small updates like this in the future.
@Drangor think he means the sound effects also!. I think you can play a game now with just ridleys grunt and pikas sqeak when hit.... What a year! 😂😂🤔
Music is meh. They took out all my fav tracks from the Wii u version when they made ultimate, so I already could careless about the current selection. Add them back in and hell yes! Until then, I still like the Wii u s smash music selection better. Ulitmates track list doesn't hold a candle to my nastolgia for the missing tracks.

@Jacob1092 "could care less" is an idiom, roughly meaning a phrase born in sarcasm. It means "well I guess I could care a little less but I really do care very very little". It's more cheeky than the on-the-nose "couldn't care less" crowd.

the expanded music selection is a great touch, so many songs go underlooked with stage restrictions. i really hope they eventually make mini battlefield available for all stages soon, this is a great extra pillar for competitive variety.

@horizoniki You could also translate "couldn't care less" to mean that you care very much and nobody could possibly convince you to care any less.
