One of the beat 'em up highlights last year was River City Girls by WayForward. It put a fun twist on the classic Kunio-kun series - requiring Misako and Kyoko to fight their way across the city in order to rescue their boyfriends Kunio and Riki.
During this week's Limited Run Games 'LRG3' livestream, it was revealed more adventures and action was planned for the girls, although there's nothing to reveal just yet. Here's the official word from WayForward:
Great news, River City Girls fans! We're thrilled to confirm that, as mentioned on @LimitedRunGames' LRG3 stream, more RCG action is on the way! We don't have any more details to share at this time, but stay tuned for updates in the future!
If you'd like to learn more about this new but old series from WayForward, why not check out our interview with the River City Girls' director, Adam Tierney.
It's also just been announced that Nintendo's Treehouse event taking place later today will feature "a title in a franchise new to developer WayForward". In a follow-up message, Nintendo has confirmed that this game is based on a third-party property.
Are you glad to hear more River City Girls action is on the way? What WayForward developed game are you hoping to see at the upcoming Treehouse? Share your thoughts down below.

Can’t wait to punch the bad guys as my favorite doppelgängers 😉
I’m glad we will be getting more. I love the game, and the soundtrack is an absolute banger. Lol.
Really nice, that game was definitely a highlight of last year. This isn’t the announcement though for anyone wondering, that’s going to be during the Treehouse stream.
@Apportal I doubt this is what's being revealed tomorrow since it said the franchise they're working with is new to them.
hmm...mine still sealed....
I need to pick this up someday, along with Streets of Rage 4.
Just got it. The other day. Sooo much fun.
I adore this game. I'm still hoping that Scott Pilgrim Vs The World will be re-released on modern platforms at some point.
@nessisonett - Is it though? If you read that stream it says it will be new to WayForward.
@Paraka
It'll be a franchise that Wayforward's never worked with, they've already worked on a Kunio-Kun/River City Ransom so it isn't this.
@Toy_Link - Exactly. And Nintendo followed up with a tweet being third party property.
So no Metroid.
Hate these limited edition releases.... wish the world was more into physical editions as I love physical but refuse to pay the 3-4x cost for them... guess I don’t live em that much.. 😜
@Paraka
? I never said it was Metroid, but ok.
@Entrr_username I didn’t say that. I’m just disappointed with this title.
I wish I liked RCG like everyone else did, but the controls just killed it for me. SoR4 is more to my liking as far as controls. I’m curious to see what WayForward has though.
@Toy_Link - It's a general comment, not directed at you personally. Many suspected Metroid.
@Ralizah
I do have both physical. You could borrow it.
I really liked this game. Add online play, that’s all I ask for.
So it will be a new game or a port?
And where is the direct? Sony and Microsoft going hard on next gen, Nintendo doesn’t move at all
awesome. now the original's price will drop
Was pretty excited for RCG, but it ended up being a disappointment. It felt like what it was, Americans trying to make a game that takes place in Japan. It was inauthentic and just didn’t work. Like Lucy Liu trying to speak Japanese in Kill Bill.
This game is a true gem and work of art. And a tonload of fun.Glad I got the Limited Run Physical which came with quite some goodies for the time.
Yay RCG!!
@Joekun lol while I liked the game a lot i definitely see what you mean!
@SoManyHaveDied May I ask the origin of your username?
@geo-shifter I'm exactly the same. I love SoR4, Fight 'n' Rage, and The TakeOver, but River City Girls was absolutely awful.
@RainbowGazelle I don’t want to say it’s awful exactly. It has everything else going for it personally: the graphics/visuals, the animation, the music, it has a comedy factor, etc.
I just got my physical of SoR4 though, and love love LOVE it.
I’ve been very picky about what I buy lately. I have plenty disposable income, but don’t feel like wasting it on games (eg. I bought Wonderful 101 and ended up being disappointed). RCG and SoR4 are the only beat ‘em ups I’ve bought on Switch so far.
@geo-shifter Yeah the music and presentation of RCG is really good, but the laggy controls and missed inputs just kill it completely. I'll be getting SOR4 physically on the PS4 at the end of July!
I hope the art style this time around is like Streets of Rage 4.
@Scollurio me on a killstreak
@Benji80 i saw that but $20 is still a bit much for this IMHO. i'm waiting for 15ish
Bakugan first though.
@__jamiie Umm it was a few weeks ago.
@Tasuki Ummm...my previous comment was July 2020.
