UK chart data is now in for the week ending 27th June, revealing that the highest-charting game on a Nintendo system is none other than Bravely Second: End Layer, a 3DS game that launched back in 2016.
It's naturally quite a surprise to see the game jump into such a high position from nowhere, but the sudden boost in sales came thanks to a huge discount at UK retailer, Argos. It didn't sell enough physical copies to outdo The Last of Us Part II, but it did beat newcomer SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated.
Elsewhere, Ring Fit Adventure is still performing nicely and Animal Crossing: New Horizons has re-entered the top ten after a slight tumble last week.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 | The Last of Us Part II |
- | 2 | Bravely Second: End Layer |
- | 3 |
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated |
2 | 4 | Ring Fit Adventure |
12 | 5 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
3 | 6 | FIFA 20 |
4 | 7 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
6 | 8 | Grand Theft Auto V |
17 | 9 | The Last of Us: Remastered |
7 | 10 | Minecraft (Switch) |

Ah yes, the hottest Nintendo Switch title.
Just saw this over on PushSquare and was baffled! So it was on sale for £3 in Argos on a clearance thing, but how many can they possibly have sold!
Physical charts are really skewed from reality these days in my opinion.
Well that's a win for Square Enix anyway, increased brand awareness for when Bravely Default II comes to the Switch.
Was on Argos trying to skim through and get some 3DS games for cheap, but they are either sold out or too far away for me to obtain. Funnily enough, they were also selling the limited/collectors edition for £4, so some people got very lucky indeed.
@RupeeClock seems funny since they apologized for second and the II demo wasn't a hit with fans
@ancientlii it wasn't? I personally kinda enjoyed BDII demo to be honest.
@Dremp yep, people were real eager to provide feedback and even got pissed at the form since it wouldn't let people submit if they used too many characters, not per box, for the whole thing. BUT turns out there was a different form without that issue.
This: The news article we got.
"3DS games like Bravely Default are on huge sales on Argos right now. Act fast!": The news article we wanted last week.
Not sure what corners of Britain you can get these Argos discounts. I tried addresses of various family members and couldn’t get anywhere near Bravely Second. I have, however, just now picked up Captain Toad and Monster Hunter Stories at good prices.
Bravely Second braves in second!
Ironically, this is perhaps its peak chart position.
Pretty sad this site didn't mention the argos sale, and now it's too late
Tried to pick up a few bargains on Argos but same for me, nothing local.
Unsurprisingly a lot of Bravely Second ended up being bought by scalpers and being sold on eBay.
@frabbit 3 quid for the collectors edition as well! I saw that and looked back every day for stock but they never had any 😔
A 3DS game at number 2 in the charts in June 2020 in the UK, 3DS lives!!!
It surprise me that UK still plays and buy 3DS games at all.
Didn't know Argos had a sale, most wasn't available on my area but I did manage to order Federation force for £3.99 and Professor Layton Miracle Mask for £7.49
They also had two YoKai Watch 2 games for £2.99 each, but I haven't finished the first so I didn't bother in the end.
I was hoping something like Mario + Luigi would be available
Either some body at Argos found a pallet of 3ds bravely games or I’ve long suspected that Nintendo uses Argos to off load old old stock in the uk.
Bravely collection on switch
What a game! Make sure to play the demo/prelude, anyone who just bought it.
Looks like everything’s out of stock for delivery to Edinburgh or Inverness. 😤
People still buy GTA V in UK? The game was free last month, and will be free for PS5.
People saying this shows how physical games don't sell are missing a huge point here. This is an amazing game at a really cheap price, of course it will sell tons if people can grab it (I was lucky to get one). Just because it's not on the latest console means nothing, this is a class game for a stupid price. Not everyone got rid of their 3DS when the Switch released, it's still an amazing platform, despite the amount of '3DS is dead' articles on here
@Fandabidozi Is there a bonus for playing the demo? Thanks for the heads up if there is
It was actually £2.49. People should use deal sites and set up notification alerts. I've been enjoying Federation Force [£3.99], yet to play Monster Hunter Stories [£9.99] or Sticker Star [£7.49]. And I was lucky to find stock of Kirby Triple Deluxe [£7.49] where a family member lives which they didn't mind picking up for me ☺ I suspect Argos will discount more 3DS games yet as they still have some at near regular price eg Luigi's Mansion 1
Braverly fans getting themselves ready for Braverly Default 2
Argos still seems to have a good few copies of Metroid: Samuels Returns for £12.99. I think that must be the last true original 3DS title from Nintendo, unless you count the extra content for Bowser’s Inside Story.
Bravely Second is a great game and an amazing sequel to Bravely Default. Those people are lucky and I'm glad so many more people in the UK get to experience it!
As mentioned, it should raise awareness of the series and increase BDII sales too. I just hope SE takes the criticism from the feedback and improves the battle system a bit (a lot) before release.
I took part in the feedback survey too and their honestly wasn't a lot you could say.
It was 2.49. I picked up 2
Finished Last of Us 2 at the weekend. Outstanding game but still prefer the first game as it is more focused and resonated with me more. Hoping for a 60fps update on PS5.
Animal Crossing was clearly a stock issue last week, it could be hanging in the top 10 alongside Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the rest of the Switch's lifespan.
Another week and 5 games exclusive to Nintendo platforms in the top 10 and overall 17 titles in the top 40, looks like this is the new normal!
The collectors edition was also available for little bit more, shame none were in stock locally.
@Krull I need to know more about this "Metroid: Samuels Returns". It must be a rare version of Metroid
@MS7000 I got very lucky 🥳
@MS7000 I was one of those people! I had to make a 15 mile trip to pick it up, and could barely fit it in my bag on the motorcycle but it was well worth it! 😁
@Crimson_Ridley @sandman89 I am insanely jealous of both of you right now. Good finds though. Hope you enjoy it!
Loads of cheap 3DS games on Argos at the moment.
I got Bravely Second: End Layer for £2.49, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. for £1.99 each, plus a few others.
Guess Argos don't do affiliate links which is why NL haven't reported it.
I was very disappointed with the BD2 switch demo and will not be buying it.
@duffyma71
It’s basically a whole chapter to the story and sets up a lot of things coming up. I’d say it’s essential, definitely. 👍
Looks like it unlocks some outfits too but I don’t think I worked out how to do that yet.
@Fandabidozi Brill, thanks for that then
@frabbit Perhaps the UK charts are just physical sales of a few shops...
I am playing Bravely Default now for the first time and I love it. Gameplay and music are gold.
@retro_player_77 I bought the WiiU on impulse about 7 years ago. If I passed on that and stayed out of gaming all of these years, I totally think I would have taken the plunge on a 3ds during times like these, especially if I could not find a Switch.
@MS7000 I also got the yo Kai watch games because why not they were so cheap I thought I’d try them
I'm surprised at all the love for the Bravely series. As a huge RPG fan from the SNES onward, I found the characters likable but the actual games repetitive and boring. Even before the infamous repeating part of the first one. Small areas to explore, minimalist towns with not much in them, short dungeons, the whole game was basically just a boss battle rush with small interconnecting dungeons between. Octopath seemed to fix this slightly, but really repeated the same sin. I can't get too excited for either series at the moment, despite initially loving both when first getting started with them. I geared up for a big epic adventure and ended up in a boss battle rush in a tiny area.
I highly recommend Bravely Second. It fixed a few minor issues I had with the first game and greatly expands upon some plot points and characters from Bravely Default. Playing the first game is highly recommended, but this is enjoyable even without it.
...Also, the stuffed Chomp minigame is surprisingly addicting lol.
Every 3DS game that is a bargain is neither in stock for delivery or pickup.
@Diddy64 Metroid: Samuels Returns is about the comeback of a mid-market jeweller in a retail landscape under threat from an alien menace.
(Stupid autocorrect...)
@teamdoa Depends where you live. Lots of cheap titles available in the Old Street, London store.
I liked Bravely Second. Can't wait for Bravely Default 2.
Made it to the Beach in TLOU2 last night. Amazing piece of Digital Art. Great it is still up there.
There was a retailer with enough unsold stock of a four year old game to make the chart?
@KingMike Or you don't need to sell that many copies to make the chart.
@Krull Nice!
(Autocorrect never fails to prank us )
I'm not from the UK, but I've been playing my 3ds quite a lot lately. Got into Metroid: Samus Returns, Persona Q 1 & 2 (I really dislike the lack of 3D support in the second game ), and Picross 3D round 2 again, and was thinking about replaying Bravely Default and Bravely Second.
Bravely Second sold ~4,500 copies at launch in the UK and ~13,500 copies lifetime prior to the Argos sale. After the Argos sale, its lifetime sales figures doubled to ~27,000 copies.
It's pretty crazy that there were 13,000+ unsold copies of this 4 year-old game lying around at a single retail chain to begin with.
I bought 4 copies also all the 1.99 and 2.49 games. I won’t play these but will trade them in
@RPGamer It does if you had bothered reading the comments above!
So with right low price there's still money to be made on 3ds...not quite dead eh?
@dimi
If you need to cut the price of 3DS games down to £2-4 to get them off of store shelves, then yes, the 3DS is quite dead.
Some people are trying to catch up on the Bravely series before the second sequel launches.
