Sega has just announced the Game Gear Micro. As the name suggests, this is a micro version of its original 1990 handheld. This smaller system will launch in Japan on 6th October for ¥4,980 - which is expected to equate to about $50 / €50 locally.
It will be available in black, blue, yellow and red, and each colour will include four different games. Yes, you read correctly. Here's the line-up for each one:
- Black: Out Run, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Royal Stone, Sonic the Hedgehog
- Blue: Baku Baku Animal: Sekai Shiikugakari Senshuken, Gunstar Heroes, Sonic & Tails, Sylvan Tale
- Yellow: Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux, Shining Force, Shining Force II, Shining Force: Final Conflict
- Red: Columns, The G.G. Shinobi, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special

Here are the measurements of the unit: 80 mm wide, 43 mm tall, and 20 mm deep with a 1.15-inch display. It also includes a single mono speaker, a headphone jack, and runs on two AAA batteries. Alternatively, you can play for a longer period of time with a USB cable (sold separately).
The Game Gear Micro will come with a "Big Window Micro" if you buy an entire set (valued at ¥29,980) containing all four colours. This is an accessory based on the same one released for the original system many years ago, and can be used to magnify the size of the screen.

Get the AC adapter. This might use 6 batteries that only give 30 minutes of play time.
Looks like the size of a joycon............. that's not a compliment
I need it if it’s real
I hope it isn't really that small lol.
This pretty micro alright
Cool hope it not too big
Somewhat disappointing reveal, considering the hype purported by that Famitsu writer. It also looks way too small to be practical. But the price isn’t bad.
I’m a sucker for these minis/revivals; own several already: Snk Neo Geo Mini, Nes classic, Super Nintendo Classic, Genesis mini, C64 mini, Playstation mini, Turbo Grafx mini, Atari Flashback 7. So I will still probably get this.
Instant buy for me, hopefully more than one game though?
Edit: will cost around 46 dollars in Japan according to 'The Verge' and come in 4 different colours.
That's actually kinda cool. I love how small it is.
That's too small for a handheld device.
They know its the year 2020 right? That thing is entirely to small.
Awesome! I’m buying!!!
Somewhat interested in this. Loved the game gear back in the day.
@BenAV Even if it’s unplayable?
Does it have games preinstalled or does it take original cartridges??
I didn't realize June 3rd was April 1st.
Considering I'm something around 6 ft 9 and have big hands, I guess I won't be able to play it if it's really the size shown in the picture... Too small, my god!
That screen is so tiny, I don't know if it'd be playable for me. I have problems with the GBA SP screen.
@Tasuki
Considering that it looks smaller than a Game Gear cartridge, my bet would be on everything preinstalled.
Is this the ground breaking news they were talking about?
Did SEGA feel the need to compete with the Game Boy Micro or something?
Wait WTF? This was their big Announcement? Who the heck was like ‘yeah everyone wants a Dreamcast mini, so let’s give them Arthritis with the game gear mini.” 😂
@Antraxx777 It still looks playable. I wouldn't really be getting it to play it much regardless though, more of a collectors thing. Rather just play my Switch for my handheld gaming.
If it's got an HDMI out, then I'm tempted. Otherwise... there's a reason my GBM doesn't get much use <3
ok... a mini version of a handheld console... not sure if want...
***** wrong with Sega ??? 😂😂😂
I don’t think I could play on this for 30 seconds without either my hands sweating from holding something so small or squinting to see the screen.
I want the original version, the same bulkiness but better screen better battery.
As much as I like the Game Gear, I don’t know if I see the point. You can already get several of the best titles on 3DS, along with the console versions of games like Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Gunstar Heroes. What non-licensed exclusives could they offer? The Genesis Mini made sense.
If anything, I think that the Dreamcast deserves a mini. It may not have sold well, but it’s at least deserving of a second glance.
The Sega Series X is a much better reveal than this
A starter for my 3 year old!
Good luck beating the first boss of Sonic 2 GG on that thing.
Good luck reading text in the few RPGs it had.
Almost seems like a hardcore challenge someone made up for a game like Mario 64's Green Mushroom of Death or Nuzloches.
@BanjoPickles Disney come to mind as the MD Mini had a few Mickey Mouse games as does the Game Gear with Mickey, Donald and a few film tie ins.
And I suppose Capcom could let them put Mega Man Gamer Gear on it.
Pleeeeeeaase come to the West!
@Daruncic
Agreed. Outside of emulation, it's more trouble than it's worth to get a GG to output to a television (though I still intend to try)
@Angelic_Lapras_King
That is true, though I vaguely remember the Mega Man being kind of crap.
Game Gear had a pretty decent library, but most of the best games were simply watered down versions of what was offered on the MD/Genesis (Streets of Rage, Sonic).
I suppose I could get this for my daughter, since her hands are small enough for it.
Wait... this, is the announcement?
I'm excited for this
@HIGHscores85 Is this an april fools joke?
GBA Micro's long lost brother
So do I need to squint to be able to play this?
I hope that hand is from a man with Andre The Giant sized hands.
Can this play Wii games does anyone know?
Neat! I still hope this is separate from the June 4th announcement though...
Frickin tiny as hell.
Sega, those of us that remember this didn’t get smaller and better eyes with age! We got BIGGER and see WORSE! How does this make sense?! In 2020 the Game Gear should come in closer to iPad size, not a key chain!
Where am I going to find six AA's that will fit that thing?!
A Master System mini would be better.
What is this? A gaming console for ants?!
All jokes aside, if that thing doesn't plug into a TV and allow for a controller to be plugged into it, this is a hard pass for me. You're asking me to presumably pay $50 to squint at a tiny screen to play subpar versions of Sonic 1 and 2. No thanks.
@Thraxmo How do you fit 6 batteries into this thing?
Is there even room for 2?
These gadgets is useless. The screen is far too small.
I own a Mini Arcade and it's unplayable due to the same screen size and tiny buttons and stick.
Wait, this was the revolutionary announcement teased by the Famitsu writer??.Hmmm, okay.
Too small of a screen, but this may be decent if it's preloaded with all/most of the first party Game Gear games.
50 comments and nobody has complained it’s not Nintendo news?! How is this possible...
Is this a joke? Is it really THAT small? Who wants to play a video game on a screen smaller than an original Game Boy screen!?! It'd be like playing a game on a digital watch!
Well that was disappointing. Thought it was going to be a DC mini.
Just no. This is a bad joke.
They should rebrand it the Sega Eyestrain.
I like it but I hope it has a decent battery. Because I picked up a Pocket Sprite a while back and it's really cool but the battery doesn't last very long, and the res on the screen doesn't show text very well.
@banjopickles : The mega man game gear game did suck, but it would be the only reason I'd want this if it is on it.
I am glad this happened. Nintendo can learn without making the mistake themselves that no one wants a mini handheld that is too small.
Personally, I would love a mini Game Boy that is only a little smaller and has a backlight.
Is that Bigfoot's hand? Otherwise, that is super small. I may go blind playing that thing.
That looks like a waste, unless you have hands the size of a five y/o.
Seeing this I really hope Nintendo will someday release a GBA or NDS classic like they did with the SNES classic, with games included in the system.A man can only hope.
im just gonna say, size matters.
Will look cute next to the Gameboy micro. Has the GameGear / Master System library got enough games to entice Americsn audiences though. I don't think so. Not enough nostalgia there. Maybe the European and Japanese market will be enough for them.
To anyone that is worried about this being too small, it looks like it's about the same size as the Game Boy Micro, which was surprisingly comfortable. And I have above average sized hands.
Just give me the Master System mini already!
I’d rather see a Master System mini! I’m sure Sega can put 40-50 games on that bad boy!!
Cool novelty item for SEGA lovers
Very cute. Utterly ridiculous, but definitely cute.
I've always wanted a Game Boy Micro... If the ROM selection is good, maybe I'll just get this instead!
@Superzone13 I bet the people who played that Game Gear (the target crowd) don't have the same eyesight that they had back then.
Stupidly small. So long, legible text.
Reminds me of the ridiculously small cell phone in Zoolander. I know they say Japanese hands are smaller, but damn. Is it April 1?
@BanjoPickles True but they did at least manage a sizeable library on 3DS without resorting to GG SOR at least, so I would imagine the library for this will be most of that and a few others like Disney.
Merely mentioned Megaman as well....did Capcom even release anything else for it? XD
@Crono1973 Haha fair.
@Superzone13 go see the Kotaku news article, it shows a comparison and it's for sure smaller. XD
Sega does what Nintendon't
Am I reading the website right and it only comes with four different games per color?
Ughhh. Hard pass for me. Each of the four colours comes with 4 games... and only 4 games... and each one has different games, so you have to buy them all if you want all the games. No thanks.
Conveniently, there's also a 4-pack which also exclusively includes the Sega Big Window magnifier accessory.
Make it 50% bigger and I am down.
@kayleedayo I did read the website right... thank you.
What was the thought process with this image “put it in your palm and spread your fingers as much as you can”
It looks about the size of a game boy micro so it’s not that bad
@Antraxx777 I thought so as well but I feel like the big reveal was set to June 4? I can be remembering wrong but I think I've seen that date.... Fingers crossed
its called micro for a reason guys lol
@Stoffe: I thought 'Well, that's it!" when the Game Gear Micro interview went up just now on Famitsu... but it's a different journalist! So... there's still hope... 🤣
@Anti-Matter It's about the size of a Game Boy Micro.
That size seems ridiculous. My RS-1 was tiny, and that looks tinier.
@KnightRider666
That is true. Also, there would be some games that, to the best of my knowledge, have never seen rerelease such as Defenders of Oasis, Ax Battler, and Land of Illusion.
I guess that I could see a GG Mini lineup looking something like this:
1). Sonic 1
2). Sonic 2
3). Streets of Rage 2
4). Shining Force
5). Ecco the Dolphin
6). GG Shinobi
7). Gunstar Heroes
8). Mega Man (maybe?)
9). Fatal Fury Special (surely Sega could iron out a deal for this? It was actually a shockingly-good port)
10). Land of Illusion
11). Sonic Drift
12). Bubble Bobble
13). Columns
14). Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
15). Jungle Strike, or Road Rash (if Road Rash 2 can make it to the Genesis Mini, then surely one of these two can make it to the GG)
16). Vampire: Master of Darkness
Fill out the remainder of the list with the likes of Sonic: Triple Trouble, and a few out-of-left field picks and it would definitely be worth the $50. Like I said, my old man hands probably won't get much mileage from a product like this, but my daughter absolutely loves the Genesis and Turbografx-16 Mini, so I may surprise her with this. It'd be ideal for a six year old's hands.
@kayleedayo Yeah, I really, really hope there's more than this 😃
Here's the vid they had on it:
Is this the SEGA news that would “rock the games industry” that was reported about last week?
@Thraxmo That is so true..... That was the only thing holding it back. It was a battery eating machine!
.....four games? So, considering that they’re charging, what, $50 for this, they couldn’t put all 16 games on a single unit?
Hard pass. I’m pretty sure that this thing will bomb without a trace.
Im fine with the tiny size. Loved the gameboy micro. Shame there are only 4 games on each. Hopefully they will be hacked as to include a couple of games I want.
16 games on it could of been fun, but only 4 per? It’s a pass.
I’m sorry but this is awful
Has M2 been confirmed to be involved?
this is the biggest pile of ***** i have ever seen
@Tasuki it has only 4 games dude!
$50 with 4 games.
And I assume it doesn't have a cartridge slot.
This is a boutique item for Japanese girls to keychain on their backpacks. Lol
I doubt this will even release outside of Japan.
@Ralizah each version has only 4 games! learn how to read articles and watch videos
This article has been updated with additional information since it originally went live.
Ok I’ll buy one if they come here.
Well... I guess one could claim this is a game changer... changes them into unplayable...
Still have mine. I think I am good.
Hated the game gear. This seems 10 times worse. Stupidly small.
Why did they design it that small? Aren't they aware that most people who played on a GameGear now need glasses to do practically anything?
@BlackenedHalo
For the first 2 hours, the article did not have any mention of the game selection or the video, as it wasn't public information when this article came online.
@Liam_Doolan updated the article once SEGA uploaded the video.
@BlackenedHalo You're WAY too aggressive, dude. Take a chill pill.
Anyway, my point stands. We don't know what the non-Japanese iterations are getting games-wise.
This is beyond stupid. The gamegear had a total of like 15 good games and the rest were just awful. Plus the screen would be so damn tiny it would be like playing games on a wrist watch. I did that back in the 80's with those little LCD games. Didn't like it then either.
wayyy too small. Some of you will be needing a huge lense while gaming on it. I guess they are aiming to 4 year olds with their tiny hands. But older audience this is garbage. WTF were they thinking. No sale! Not even if it would be free. Fix it and give us a proper size like GBA or NDS. No excuse in a time like to use such small screen
Apart from the obvious shortcomings, where is the white version????
@mjharper the launch PS1 had a smaller controller in Japan for that very reason.
Very cute, but only four games per colour and the selection is very Japanese centric. A more Western tuned version will surely follow.
Disappointing to only have 4 different games per unit. Might have been tempted otherwise at that price. It's a no from me.
I was really hyped and thought that this would be the first of the new "mini consoles" (nes, psx, genesis) that I would actually buy - until I found out that there are only 4 games in it
Sorry, not this time. Too small. A revival of a portable system should be called (and made) differently, with games in the internal memory, but not even smaller. I sold a Game Boy Advance SP and bought an original one with the backlit mod because that was too uncomfortable for me. Let alone a Game Gear Micro...
By the way, there is a mistake in the article: the Shining games are Shining Force Gaiden and Shining Force Gaiden II, not the ones without the "Gaiden" part, which would be Mega Drive exclusives.
This is a cool little toy and my son will be nearly 4 when it comes out so I might get him one, it won't be so small for him. It's a nice little novelty item that's all
The Mega Drive mini was a love letter to the 90s and 16bit generation, they nailed the hardware, emulation, game selection and even went as far as to emulate the original box art.
This cannot be the follow up! My money is on AT Games being behind this.
Oh lordy, I actually had that magnifier. I'd forgotten just how incredibly janky childhood was; thanks for the reminder, Sega
Derek Zoolander: What is this? A console for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to game if they can't even handle the console?
The GAME GEAR was a bit naff to begin with. I don't mind the size, it's kooky. (It's meant to be a plastic commemorative toy, so quit carrying on like you wanted to plough 100's of hours in to it!). However, asking people to buy 4 versions isn't a celebration. (Unless my dictionary needs updating.)
Used to love the game gear and should be really hyped for this ...but £50....with 4 games?? And a tiny tiny screen .... this had so much potential ...
It’s just nonsensical
If each one had all 16 games it, it'd still be a rip off. I think this is aimed at collectors rather than anyone who actually wants to play some Game Gear games.
Chocolate teapot.
Well.... that is absolutely mental.
@NinChocolate I was as shocked as you
Terrible!!!! Standard Sega the chance to do something great but never hit the mark.
Is the “ground shaking” event that was mentioned last week? Definitely didn’t register on the Richter scale!
And this is why Sega is no longer in the hardware business. Absolutely shockingly awful , who the hell greenlights this stuff. I’m just so confused.
Glad it exists but not for me. Master system mini with 50 games installed and I’m in! Xx
It's hilarious how this news didn't impact awareness of the BLM protests whatsoever. So why in the holy mother of ***** do companies like Sony think that delaying events is going to have an effect?
When is a company going to realise making a retro console with separate carts to buy would be better. They’d sell boat loads...
Wow! An expensive choke hazard! Thanks Sega!
I have flashbacks of the GameBoy Micro:
Not that I'm happy about that.
Dear god, it's TOO small and JUST four games or so per "console"?? Better to have all 16 as a starter set.....for value for money... I mean... most of those games you can find other version on the Switch or the 3DS or so on and the screen is LARGE enough that you don't have to squint to focus on the gameplay....
Seriously who in SEGA thought this was a good idea to go ahead with.
It's so terribly cynical to release 4 different ones with 4 different games on each too. The memory size of each game is negligible - just put 16 games on each one and provide it in different colours rather than making people have to buy 4.
And yes... the size is ridiculous. Well done, you've successfully made it teeny tiny. Now make it a normal size again.
In another time line this announcement was for a Sega Retro handheld with a good quality HD Screen and HDMI our that can emulate every SEGA Console and all their Arcade games (at least up to Out Run 2).
Alongside it, Sega launched an Online store selling stacks of their old games across all those formats. Plus quality USB Replicas of Controllers from each system for that authentic experience.
However we’re in the Dark Timeline....
Is this the Sega news that will put the world outside down according to Famitsu?
@datamonkey That's cause we already got those, it's called clone consoles like the Retrons, Retro-Bits, and Analogue FPGA clone systems.
Four Game Gear games on each, what kind of joke is that? If you thought a single joy-con as a full controller is a nightmare the Game Gear Micro might set a new record.
Sega releases the first true hand held and the internet has lost it's mind.
I adore the Game Gear. My first ever video games console. But this is really, really crap. Too small, not enough games and $50 EACH!? I would love something like this done right but big nope from this Sega fanboy.
Reminder - you can download game gear games on 3ds with a bigger screen.
The screen on a Gameboy Micro is 2inches, this GG Mini is 1inch! I think its more of a collectors item than a playable console?
@bigcalsworld that’s what she said
The selection of games is outstanding, and I absolutely love how they also minified the bulky accessories like they did with the Mega Drive Mini. However, €50 for only four games is ridiculous. It doesn't even have a rechargeable battery.
It's probably just a novelty 60th anniversary collectors item that will never leave Japan. As usual the comments don't disappoint.
If they can't be bothered to make it a playable screen size with rechargeable battery, it should be marketed and priced as nothing more than a novelty keyring accessory. $15 maximum.
@BigLarry Yeah as a keyring accessory is actually cool.
This is going to fail miserably, just as the Game Boy Micro did. The original Game Gear and Game Boy both had small displays, but at least they were (barely) visible. Even the original DS screen was that size, and that's too small for me. Why would anyone want a screen that's even smaller?
The PSP was the first screen that was big enough to make me want to play a handheld system over a TV-connected one. The 3DS XL was great too. I recommend using those two systems to portably play videogames, including Game Gear and Game Boy games.
The buttons and control pad look horrible. Also only having four games on each one is a bit silly. The Sonic genre mentioned are better on the Master System because of a bigger screen. Wouldn't even buy these for collecting purposes.
No because the games are less engaging that mobile apps you can download for free.
£50 for these games is robbery.
Would only buy one as a novelty, I am ok playing GG Shinobi, and other game gear games via the 3DS.
I still have an original game gear with lots of games, but don’t currently have a working adaptor
This must be a joke... €50 for 4 games in a screen that you need to buy an magnifier separately...
This was the big annoucement they promissed? Bigger as PS5?
COVID-19 is really afecting the notion of reality for some...
So, they made it too small to see the screen so made a magnifier, they put only 4 games on each handheld even though memory exists for the entire library, they put different games on each one so in order to get all 16 games you have to buy all four which is roughly $200, then put all the Shining Force games on one when they could have branched the franchise over multiple units to get the Shining Force fans to buy them all? This kind of baffling practices are why Sega dropped out of the hardware business.
Will be getting one for the nostalgia feels. But damn this is smaller than the Game Boy Micro.
GBM:
Dimensions: 50×101×17.2 mm with a 2-inch screen
GGM:
43×80×20 mm with a 1.15-inch screen.
@whizzkidd It was not, it was an Arcade cloud gaming service only in Japan. Mind you this was reported on by Famitsu so it fits.
if they made the screen (and proportionately the whole system) an inch bigger, this would sell so much more than this is going to.
They look like little pieces of plastic. Even the Shining Force micro isn't sweet enough to get me to buy these overpriced things.
BREAKING NEWS! Jailbreakers have ALREADY modded the GAMEGEAR Micro...
...they added a keychain.
Should have just been a Game Gear mini (so maybe say 50% the size of the original) that came pre-loaded with around 5O of the best Master System and Game Gear games (since it could technically play both) for the same price and also in the various colours for a bit of consumer choice. Now that would have been pretty cool. This, however, is a bit of a stocking filler and little else.
Looks like the Red one would be the best for me since it has the only two games I really played on my Game Gear (plugged in of course). Columns and Shinobi. The only other games I owned were Ninja Gaiden, Sonic and Spider-Man; but they didn’t get much use.
What a dumb dumb thing to make. Sega and Microsoft should have come together and made a new Sega Game Gear to be XBOX's answer to the SWITCH.
@impurekind agree with this. In its current state it’s a baffling release and price point. Classic SEGA in many ways. They are the kings of the ‘wtf’ release.
Why do this?? Why not make a slimmed-down version of the OG Game Gear about normal size with around 25-30 games and price it in the $75-$100 range?
It is way too small and has too few games on it. I wish Sega made a Master System Mini, a Saturn Mini and a proper Game Gear Mini that is bigger than the Micro but smaller than the original, and has at least 20 games on it. Preferably more.
It would be much better If Sega would just release their Game Gear games on the eShop, like how SNK released their Neo Geo Pocket Color Game Gals Fighters.
This is foolish.
arg, screen too smal, not enough games
Please don't do that with GameBoy micro
I would LOVE to get the Shining Force edition, however there's no chance this will get released in the UK in my opinion. Still, you never know!
Looks like crap.
@KevTastic84 Most of the library announced here is Japanese exclusives. Not sure if Sylvan Tale is a text-heavy game but otherwise there is at least one on each.
Of the Shining Force trilogy on the one console, only the second game got a western release.
And the other one has two Megami Tensei games. One of which is a port of an original Game Boy 2D JRPG that only got a western release on a later Game Boy Color upgrade (Revelations: The Demon Slayer, the localization was probably released to cash in on Pokemon's initial hype).
$50 each for only four games does seem quite steep, not too far off from the Classic NES Series GBA games, in terms of bad value re-releasing classic games. (on the GBA, I could see some people wanting to pay $20 for Zelda or Mario, but... Ice Climber?)
After the amazing done right Megadrive Mini they made these with only 4 games on each out of the huge wonderful game gear collection. What a joke and a they should have just done it propel with heaps of amazing game gear games.
This is like dumping rubbish in the sea and profiting from it.
Anyone else wish companies would start to look for more sustainable ways of making products and not needless printing of throw away plastic toys.
I appreciate the various colors, but really? Tying specific games to them is not a good idea. I'd be okay with $50 for one console with all games, but $200 to play everything? And it's the only way (correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the impression I'm getting so far) to get that magnifier, which I most likely need because I have very bad eyesight?
I understand the hate on emulation, but $200 to legally play 16 Game Gear games is a joke.
Remember when people said Nintendo were exploiting nostalgia with 30 games for £50?
What a wasted opportunity that they didn’t include a keychain hole to attach to a bag..
I’m a female and thus have naturally smaller hands than most males and even I am getting hand cramps just looking at this. The deal breaker is the screen size though. Here’s hoping they make a switch collection.
The unit with the two Megami Tensei titles, AND Shinobi, is not black, but... red.
Perhaps we've all missed something. I hope that is so.
I might as well buy these since the Analogue Pocket is still in the 3D render tease stage. The company's complete refusal to answer any questions about it is a pretty bad showing as far as I'm concerned.
@BanjoPickles a mini Saturn and Dreamcast would be appreciated. I also want a PS2 mini, N64, and Gamecube.
A toddler might swallow one of these..
These are pretty cute.
And I love that they're launching them alongside one of those ridiculous screen-enlargement peripherals that you saw all over the place in the first half of the 90s ^^
Japan only and not the big reveal.
The big reveal is...
...cloud saves for arcade machines.... whao whow
This is so cool!
I'd rather a 1 to 1 scale game gear with about 30 games. Like almost the price of most mini consoles for 4 game gear games I'll pass.
@Sun_wukong A 50 euro keychain... no thanks.
