One chapter in blue blur's history most fans would rather forget about is Sonic Boom. Although it was considered to be a low point for Sega's long-time mascot, there are some people out there who have been wondering what's happened to the computer-animated CGI television series of the same name.
In a recent Sonic Reddit AMA, Sega Chief Brand Officer Ivo Gerscovich suggested the plan was to keep the Sonic Boom television show "airing" but now the executive producer Bill Freiberger has stamped out any hope of a third season comeback on Twitter with the following message:
https://twitter.com/BillFreiberger/status/1263572872712253440
And for those wondering what Ivo's comment about Sega not having any plans "at the moment" for a new Sonic Boom television series or video game might mean, here is Freiberger's interpretation:
in business there's no advantage to completely slamming the door shut, even if you never ever plan to go through it again.
In other words, Sega isn't going to tell fans it's completely done with this sub-series of Sonic, even if it has no intention of returning to it. The most recent new episodes of Sonic Boom aired in 2017, and the last major video game releases in this series were made available on the Wii U and 3DS.

Was hoping they didn't make another game for Sonic Boom and just kept the cartoon going...
The problem with the sonic boom show was it was basically a different show with a sonic template. I really liked some of the dialogue and jokes, a lot of them were very modern and witty, but it just didn’t feel like sonic and that’s the problem with the entire sonic boom franchise. Sega just let Americans run wild and I’m sure they know now that they should never ever do that again.
The bigger missed opportunity was not expanding on the sonic mania cartoons. That’s the type of sonic I want to see
“I see this as an absolute win” - Professor Hulk
@Cartune show wasn’t that bad, it kinda deserved a season 3. Problem was when you make shows as product placement it’s a dead end once the product dies(sonic boom games)
It's a shame, the cartoon and the comic books were both awesome, but the bad reputation of the games ruined everything.
Welp, there goes the only good Sonic property showing "Sonic Boom" as its title.
Sad, as this show was comedy gold!
I recently bought this show on DVD and I'm enjoying it. But the episodes are only ten minutes long. The jokes are funny, but ten minutes doesn't leave much time to have much in the way of a coherent story.
Sticks left her marks though!
The Boom legacy will always be the weirdest part of sonic history. rest in peace
yet more Sonic Boom games are likely to go ahead
@Pod TBH tho I loved Sticks. almost as much as cream
Apologies if I'm siding with unpopular opinion here, but I enjoyed all three Sonic Boom games. Yes, even the Wii U one. So I'm probably the only one sad to see it go. Fire and Ice was the best of the three IMHO.
The cartoon on the other hand, I haven't watched until last year. I don't have cable TV or Hulu, so I had to pretty much wait for the DVD releases.
Still wish they kept Sticks, she really is a fun character and I wouldn't mind her in the main series.
@KBuckley27 Doubtful, but I actually did like Fire & Ice on 3DS.
Enjoyed what I saw of the show, so that's kind of a shame. Rise of Lyric really didn't help the Boom brand
I'll miss the memes, ripperoni in pepperoni
That's a shame, the show was hilarious. If only the games just didn't bomb so hard.
Sadness stamp approved!
The show is on Hulu. It's alright if you're a Sonic fan and haven't watched it. I'd put it a notch above Sonic X but not quite as good as Sonic SatAM if I'm gonna compare it to past Sonic cartoons.
If it's already been three years since the last season wrapped up airing, I'm only surprised it took so long to confirm the show was over.
Well, at least the best crop of that investment lasted the longest.
I'm just going off what my brother said as I didn't have any interest to watch the show myself.
"The show ruined the characters, especially Knuckles. Some episodes were just idiotic. Like the one where the entire gang gets Eggman's D.N.A. in their food and grow mustaches. Worst of all, it never felt exciting to watch since it was more of a sitcom than a action cartoon."
I might watch it to see if it is as good as some people say but based upon my brother's opinions and my own predictions, it will probably not be the show for me. The constant self deprecating and self aware humor is something that would probably get old for my taste, especially since the games have been doing this too. And as @Strictlystyles said, it just doesn't seem like Sonic.
@Blooper987 Weirdest? Ever read the Fleetway Sonic comics?
@Elvie never read any of the comics. Boom is the weirdest part of sonics video game history, aside from when they gave sonic a human love interest and shadow a gun
People still care about Sonic Boom? Felt like Boom died years ago. Frankly, good riddance. Everything associated with Boom was garbage. Yes, even the TV show. Its TTG-esque humor got old quick.
It was already said in a previous comment, this simply wasn't a Sonic show.
Seeing how much Sonic X offered (original story, three game adaptations, original story without the human characters.)
Compare that to Boom, which gave us lazy CG animation, boring environments, no story whatsoever, dumb jokes which give Teen Titans Go a run for their money, hmm, and of course the pointless redesigns.

Has a complete Season One & Two of Sonic Boom been released on DVD and Blu-Ray?
What a shocker 😮
I'm actually a bit gutted. I used to watch this in work with one of the kids I look after.
@Strictlystyles I feel that Sonic Mania is the next step and all resources are going to that.
My daughter enjoyed the show. I thought it was okay. Not my favorite iteration of Sonic. But there's quite a few. So like Batman, there's room for all types.
At least it can live being the best show Sonic ever had. Sonic X and SatAM were awful.
Man, I loved season 2. Shame. I just hope season 2 gets released on DVD the same way season 1 did.
I don't like it
Good. To be honest, the cartoon was probably the best thing about this new spinoff series, but even that cartoon wasn't that good. Really mediocre at best. This show never felt like a real Sonic show, it felt more like a show, that took everything that was popular with modern cartoons, and just put Sonic in it.
@Ardisan finally, someone that's talking some actual sense! I don't get this love for shows like Sonic X and SatAM. In my opinion, both of those shows took themselves waaaaay too seriously and had a bunch of cringey moments. If anything was garbage, it was those two cartoons.
Why the director is not leaving any plans for Sonic Boom’s third season with Ok. KO lets be heroes, Netflix’s Inspector Gadget and Transformers mashups. IVO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ Get you next time
Why does anyone care at this point?!
Huh. I never watched the show, but I really enjoyed the 2 Boom 3ds games. I know that isn't the popular opinion, but hey, works for me!
It's alright. I figured as much, due to the Video-game-based cartoon rule. Basically, cartoons based on video games are limited to two seasons per show. Donkey Kong Country was subject to it, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures was subject to it, and Sonic Boom is subject to it. The only exceptions include anime based on video games like Kirby: Right Back At Ya, Pokémon, and even Sonic X, which had three seasons.
@Strictlystyles See that's what i don't get. What does Sonic "Feel" like to most fans. to me, he's a brash, witty and sometimes sarcastic trickster who has a strong sense of Justice and always keeps a cool head. He's not 100% comedy but he's definitely not meant to ever be taken too seriously. I think Sonic the movie and boom sonic capture that pretty well. also, i have high doubts people would give a hoot if it were an original idea and it was inspired by sonic. i think they'd hate it more.
@DrDaisy some people still like Sonic boom the cartoon and There's a meme going around about Boom Knuckles approving memes.
@AlienX @Bolt_Strike I suspected it but you two saying it's reminiscent of T.T.G. really kills the ounce of interest I had to possibly giving it a chance.
@Elvie I find the comparison pretty false. Sonic Boom is meta humor and TTG is more so juvenile humor. Ive seen some of TTG and I cant say its accurate when both are written differently.
@Ardisan Go has been getting more meta lately, mainly to outright insult the fans of the original Teen Titans.
Although, I guess T.T.G. still probably isn't as meta and subtext filled as Boom's output.
@Elvie Forget ttg, check out Battle of the Boy Bands, and The Biggest Fan.
Battle of the Boy Bands introduces Justin Beaver, a recurring character (I kid you not.) While The Biggest Fan is just a crazy fan kidnapping Sonic and telling him about fanfiction.
@G_M If you think episode 14 of Sonic X is cringy for the sad/serious moments and not the comedy bits then that's just really weird. I think that episode beats any Boom episode easily.
I can't say anything about SatAM, or the praise it gets, I just see it as a goofy cartoon, with Robotnik and Sally being the only serious characters.
@Dakotastomp I don’t think sonic boom captures sonic at all. I think it’s an American spin on sonic based on algorithms and consumer studies, which is exactly what they used to create the sonic boom franchise. Even the designs on sonic boom had sega of japan stunned, but it was Already too late.
If you’ve ever watched the sonic mania cartoons they more properly illustrate more of a sonic feel than boom does.
Sonic boom the show is like a sonic parody sit com and doesn’t really do the franchise justice but on its own Without the sonic template on it, is a decent piece of media.
Well thank god for that.
I remember buying the game, issue 1 of the comic and then sitting down my first born son, ready to welcome the new age of sonic for me and introduce him to one of my childhood hero’s and awaiting the awesome avalanche of support sonic was now getting. Episode 1 finished... we both took off our sonic t-shirts with teary eyes and thought “what the **** was that!?” Sega had ruined sonic yet again. They couldn’t kill this abomination fast enough for me.
@Strictlystyles Fair, but I still am asking what Sonic Feels like to most people in order to have a "good" Sonic cartoon. Sonic Mania is a great CLASSIC Sonic short series, but doing this in long-term form would require a lot more care and thought(and money)than I'm sure Sega is willing to give out. Also, what about when sonic first started out? Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog was wacky and comedic and at the time, but the games at the time had little plot to go off of so it did fit. I won't ignore that the series had some problems, but I don't think it was all too terrible, of course I'm not the biggest Sonic fan so it's different for me.
@Shinobi1Kenoby K i admit it was at first weird to sit through, but I highly doubt it was "Teary eyes take our shirts off wtf were they thinking" bad. The game i agree was bad and rushed, that's what soured the hope for this entry, but the show was actually pretty clever whenever it came to referencing the Sonic fan culture.
maybe you were more loyal to sonic being a strictly action-based series, but I think Sonic shouldn't be taken too seriously and can be comedic as much as it is action focused.
@Dakotastomp Sonic Mania could easily a full season worth of content, but the point was that it fit the sonic mold, it felt like sonic, but it also felt fresh since I hadnt seen that type of anime sonic since the sega cd intro. Even if you want ot take another example, look at sonic X, sonic Sat AM, they all feel like sonic, just with their on spin on it, which is fine. but the point is to make it still feel like sonic if that makes any sense.
Even if it was more action based, you cant tell me after playing most sonic games, that boomfelt like anything sonic. The whole sonic boom franchise felt like someone took sonic and made an april fools joke out of him. I really thought it was a prank when i saw the designs. even werewolf sonic was more palate-able than that. The show did similar, with a bunch of dry, existential tumblr humor that just was never sonic. But it made sense because the sonic boom games also took sonic out of his element in a bad way.
Im not saying that boom the show was a bad product, but it had no business having the sonic franchise attached to it.
@Strictlystyles alright that's fair, but i just see something salvageable in boom. i always knew it wouldn't come back, but it honestly deserved better imo.
Bring back SatAM with each episode offering Sonic Mania DLC, and watch the world burn...
I’m just being a punk. (Edit)
I think I watched it untill episode 30. It was fun, but the episodes where pretty short and its all just gags (no storyline). Eggman (and Orbot and cubot) are the highpoints of course.
I found it funny that the Sonic Boom games actually had stories. That's just nonsense since the tv-show had no story.
@Shinobi1Kenoby Funny, I felt the same way about Sonic X with its plot and story.
@Dakotastomp sonic X was also very very bad. Sonic Boom is by far and eat the worst iteration of sonic I’ve ever seen though.
@Shinobi1Kenoby agree to disagree. I wasn't expecting much in the beginning of this version, so I was actually amused they put more effort into it as they did.
Peter Knetter has got to be sad.
AND SHADOW WAS IN ONE EPISODE CMON!
AND THAT CLIFFHANGER! where was the internet petition btw?
Well thats depressing it was actually funny and well made
