As a quick reminder, today sees the launch of Minecraft Dungeons on Nintendo Switch and other major platforms. If you've been waiting to get stuck into this one, make sure to check out the brand new launch trailer above.
Inspired by the likes of Diablo, the game has up to four players battling together through action-packed, treasure-stuffed levels, all within the iconic Minecraft universe. It's an all-new action-adventure featuring an epic quest to save the villagers and take down the evil Arch-Illager. Here's a feature list:
- Dungeon Creeper! Battle new-and-nasty mobs in this all-new action-adventure, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers.
- Multiplayer! Up to four players can team up and fight together in co-op mode.
- Power Up! Unlock dozens of unique items and weapon enchantments for devastating special attacks.
- Options! Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, shielded by heavy armour!
- Epicness! Explore treasure-stuffed levels in a quest to take down the evil Arch-Illager!
Just last week, a Nintendo eShop listing revealed the game's file size to be 3.6 GB so make sure you have the required space. It'll cost you £16.74 / $19.99, or £24.99 / $29.99 for the Hero Edition complete with DLC.
Thinking of giving the game a go? Are you already enjoying it as we speak? We'll have a full review of Minecraft Dungeons for you as soon as we can, so stay tuned!

No wireless local play? I don't understand why regular Minecraft offers wireless local but this wouldn't. Im sure the 3DS did a better job allowing multiplayer between multiple consoles.
Not seeing the Zelda/Dark Souls influence. Looks more like a Minecraft version of Gauntlet/Diablo.
Looks like it could be quite though. If the reviews are good I'll keep an eye out for a sale.
Looks a good option of co-op.
From what I've seen of reviews so far, it seems very lacking so I'm gonna pass.
Inspired by Zelda and Dark Souls? Someone fire this guy immediately.
Buying it today. Been watching gameplay on Twitch, seems like a perfect game for me. Its like diablo, just «easier», less time consuming between intervals, and beautiful artistic design. Perfect when i got a new born and dont have time to play as much as before.
@PortablexombieV2 The creator of the game stated such.
@mesome713 fire him too!
Do you have to own regular Minecraft to play this? Is it an expansion or a standalone game?
@sketchturner standalone game
Just installed it on my PC. Know many reviews are currently stating the game is too short, and the campaign isn't that long, but they expect you to do multiple run throughs at three separate difficulty levels, with each one unlocking new secret areas and gear, so there is more gameplay than most reviews are currently stating.
@DevlinMandrake Yeah, when you follow the link on this "zelda and Dark Souls inspiration", it's said that it was originally inspired by Zelda but is now more akin to Diablo. Maybe, @ryancraddock, the current article could make it more clear ?
Anyway it looks nice, I'll give it a try with my kids on the Xbox PC Game Pass. The game being short and simple makes it perfect for "young" parents
Zelda and Dark Souls? Looks like Diablo-influence to me...
Marvel Ultimate Alliance is amazing and fills this void for me for now.... and likely for a long time to come.
Is it out though? Looked last night and the eShop said "Estimated release date" a day before the release date.
Then I looked down the rest of the page and Every game has an estimated release date.
At that point I decided the person running the eShop was trolling us. 😂
waiting 4 the review! if there at least a little bit of deepness in terms of loot and mechanics and also replayability I think ill grab it..
Wow where did you get zelda and dark souls comparisons from lmao its more like a diablo dungeon crawling game, looks good though might buy it later
Luckily I have an Xbox as well, so I’ll just pick this up on Game Pass
@rjejr it released in the UK at 9am this morning
@corpuscule yes I am a "young" parent and these days hearing a game is short is a plus. When I was "younger" a short game would have been a negative. But now that I am just "young" I am ok with short games.
@DennisNOR it's like diablo but not boring 😁
I want to play so bad, but have to wait for school to be finished so can play with my buddies.
Zelda inspired? That's Diablo bro.
And I'm gonna pass on this one. I watched 1 hour of gameplay and it's way too easy and one dimensional.
That's neither Zelda nor Dark Souls.
I've not seen too many reviews for this, but seeing as I already have Titan Quest and Diablo 3 on Switch, I'm not sure this can compete
@Onkel_Laser They complain the game is hard though. It was a big complaint in a bunch of reviews.
@sixrings
When im undocked, it says i can connect two or more controllers to play local multiplayer (?)
@DennisNOR They mean wireless. Like two Switchs but only one game. Or two Switchs with two games offline.
@sketchturner no you do not. Totally separate game
It's best with friends, but it is pretty fun
It's a Diablo like game that knows its audience. 3 equipment slots, 3 artifact slots (special abilities) and intuitive controls. There's also enchantments you apply as you level up and more. It's on the simple side for these styles of games, but I know it's the only chance my Minecraft addicted son will try a game like this.
Is there really a Hero edition for Switch? The Nintendo Eshop website doesn’t list that edition
@stevep i don’t see it on the website but it’s there on my switch eshop!
In the process of downloading 3 copies for my kids and me.
Played a few hours on Xbox One since it's free with gamespass. Disappointing to say the least. Gameplay, level design and graphics are very basic, ranged attacks have problems with auto-targeting. It's missing pretty much everything I like in Minecraft : free roaming and exploration. Can't jump, can't dig... they could have introduced new gameplay elements in the genre, instead they went with the same old stuff... It's OK as a free game but I wouldn't buy it. Missed opportunity.
@stevep Now there is. But if you bought the standard edition you can upgrade it with the Hero Pass. Same price, same extras.
It's Diablo Jr with a Minecraft skin over top. I probably wouldn't play it by myself, but co-op with my 7 and 10year olds is a blast. If you have a couple of kids to play with, I'd say go for it.
@daveh30 I agree, my kids love Minecraft. They realy wanted this. Love to play this together with them.
I too played a couple of hours on Xbox, but I’m contemplating a buy for the Switch edition. It’s a bit simple. Had some issues aiming, but all in all, it’s fun enough. I’m really just holding out for my daughter to try it. If she’s on board I’ll buy it, weather permitting we’re mostly outside and not being locked down to the TV (I could iPad up and launch OneCast, but this type of game + latency… nah) would be worth it. The Xbox version is localized, I hope that goes for the Switch as well, having voice acting localized to Swedish is rare and a godsend for my kids. I got into Minecraft at alpha, thought it cool that his/their office back then was so close to mine, so Mojäng (the proper spelling for gizmo) will get my support out of nostalgia. Even if it’s a different beast nowadays (and I only dabble in Minecraft since). I assume this game will grow and prosper over the years, like Minecraft… hell, I remember being stoked for the addition of the nether, pumpkins and wolfs, it seems a bit petty now… I will sink plenty of hours into this, it’s just a matter of when and where.
yeah its great with the kids. My only issue is the co-op local multiplayer does not allow for players 2-4 to use their 'profiles', they have to use generic profiles.
Played for a bit with my son and he pretty much summed it up it's Diablo for beginners. Mind you it's not a bad thing but probably suited for players too young for Diablo. It's very simplistic but it is fun. It's not going to get me playing it long term like Diablo III but for $20 it's not bad.
@sixrings it doesn’t make much sense now on the switch but eventually it will. the reason is character syncing. you can’t connect to a local wireless and online at the same time, so there would be no way to sync your character. with minecraft this didn’t matter because the data is stored on the switch and not some servers.
@derdennis no sorry. I tried 4 missions and I can say that it's boring. A little less that diablo but still boring
@Auenegheps thanks for this info! I planned on getting this game for me and my kids but already was afraid that it gets boring too soon. We have too many games that we started in coop but got bored of (lovers in a dangerous spacetime, Nine Parchments,...), don't need another
I played the first couple of levels on pc last night and though it was great fun.
I think folk need to bear in mind the target demographic for these games. As do reviewers ( yes reviewers are folk too). That demographic being gamers with families who either don't game a lot or don't play the genre a lot
With that in mind it actually does a good job of easing newbies in and still providing a challenge to more experienced dungeoneers.
And it's really pretty. Something I thought I'd never say about Minecraft. At least not pre RTX.
@derdennis if you want a diablo-like not boring, try snack world. it's really fun...
ah...but there is not local coop
It runs dreadfully on Switch docked. A horrible stuttery mess.
Wow they did a terrible job on the Switch port. So so many hitches and halts and the frame rate is hilariously bad. AVOID. I’d get a refund if I could.
