Nintendo and Microsoft have teamed up on a number of occasions to achieve the impossible. Last year, for example, Rare's iconic mascot Banjo-Kazooie debuted in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Along with this, was the release of games like the run 'n gun platformer Cuphead and the beautifully crafted Ori And The Blind Forest: Definitive Edition.
Since then, there's been on-going speculation – and even rumours – about what other Microsoft projects could possibly be ported across to Nintendo's hybrid device. Speaking on a podcast with IGN recently, the head of Xbox Phil Spencer explained how it was time for the company to "set a better expectation" with its fans.
Although he talks to Nintendo of America's president Doug Bowser on a regular basis and has "a ton of respect" for the company, Spencer wants to return the focus to team Xbox – even if he has had "some blow-back" from certain people and groups. He's also not really a fan of the whole circus (rumours and all) about certain Xbox titles possibly being released on the Switch. Here's exactly what he had to say, courtesy of GoNintendo:
The relationship with Nintendo is great. Doug Bowser and I, we talk often. Furakawa-san, the CEO of Nintendo, and I know each other well and we have conversations.
I will say that I think the individual IP by IP to different platforms, I can see [it] can kind of get confusing to customers over time. We've been learning, some of our development partners have really wanted to go do this, and we want to support the desires of our creative talent. Some of this have been partner lead.
I think more and more about what does a full Xbox experience mean on different platforms. Right now, it seems like when any game comes out, there's that, "is this one going here, is this one going there." I'd rather be able to set more of an Xbox-level expectation for our fans on where things are going to go. I thought we did that with our first party when we talked about games shipping on Xbox and PC, and I got some blow-back from certain people in certain groups on that, but at least we set an expectation on that. I'd rather see us get to that point on the different pieces of hardware we're on, so I guess I'll kind of leave it there.
I definitely have a ton of respect for the role that Nintendo plays, and I love having great games on their platform. I don't really love this idea that for every one of our games, there becomes this little rumor on it "is it going to end up on the Switch or not." I feel we should set a better expectation with our fans than that.
If Phil's comments are anything to go by – and they probably should be taken quite seriously considering he runs the Xbox division – it sounds as if Microsoft might be stepping back from its multi-platform release (on specific devices) to instead focus on its next-generation of hardware arriving this holiday season, and bolster it with as many exclusives as possible.
Would you like to see more Xbox titles released on the Switch? Can you see where Phil is coming from? Share your thoughts below.

The guy is a in such a high paying position but doesn't seem to understand that saying he is tired of a rumor will do absolutely nothing to stop any of the rumors.
There are going to be people who want and hope some MS games come to Nintendo Switch, they opened that gate themselves and the only way most people will stop talking about it, is if they go a long time without releasing anything else.
Personally, I think he is making a mistake, distancing MS from Nintendo. From what I'd seen, fans were loving the friendly relationship. Perhaps MS was hoping for Nintendo to share some IP with MS and Nintendo turned them down?
I honestly think that would be a fair trade. It would be interesting to see what both companies would do with each other's hardware.
In the end though, I agree the two need to draw a line somewhere - I just don't think this is the best spot.
Could you imagine a world where, while Sony and MS compete to make the best dedicated home console, Nintendo works with one or both of them as the leading hybrid console?
Naw, that sort of cooperative relationship would never happen. But it makes for a truly interesting idea.
Hot Take:
If you want Rare Replay you should just get an Xbox
As nice as it would be to play halo or fable on my switch, I don’t think Nintendo going to let Xbox fans have Zelda and Mario in return.
Bit of a missed opportunity not to at least sell Banjo-Kazooie on the eShop around the time the Smash Bros. collaboration happened.
Still awesome that Cuphead made it over though.
@Cacophony That’s basically what Phil is saying here. Don’t expect first party XGS games on Switch anytime soon. Cuphead and Ori came because they’re second party devs that wanted their games on Switch. Simple as that.
Well it would be hard to play sea of thieves without voice chat.
@UltraVideoGamer party chat, voice chat, messaging, online, games with gold, gamepass, crossplay,, adaptive controller. You don't need to be a xbox fan to acknowledge these are all good things which have added to the industry.
Ooblets for Nintendo Switch, please.
Maybe if you want people to buy your games on Xbox you should make them you know... better? Xbox's lineup, especially its first party lineup, is dreadful. Maybe if Microsoft put more effort into the actual gaming side of Xbox instead of focusing mostly on specs and apps, people would actually buy an Xbox instead of begging for what few games they do like to be ported to Switch. I can find more games I want on Switch than on every Xbox combined.
@UltraVideoGamer you don't like the idea that people with disabilities can now play games. You don't like the idea that during a pandemic people can play games with each other and actually talk to each other over their system whether they are playing the same game or not. You don't like the idea that you can have access to 100 games a month for $10. Well I guess there's always a contrarian or the dude whose too cool for school. I'm turning 41 that doesn't mean I wouldn't love for Nintendo to let me play their games with native voice chat, for Nintendo to let me play their current games for a monthly subscription, and the ability to play games whether I could waggle a joy con or not.
I got an X-box-Switch-Combo. I like it. Of course I would looooooove to buy a PS-4 too, but you know: wife, kid, BACKLOG.... Nintendo is my home. So I have to choose the secondary wisely. I'll wait at least 12 months before I buy a second new generation console. I'll decide by the time then. Still lovin Spencer, though. Right mindset, but a bit too less output gameswise at his company.
Off Topc: Man, I wish I could meet up with my PS-buddies these days. Staying inside sucks. I hope everybody here is somehow getting along in this situation. Feeling with the loners and the ones married with kids. I'm rather in my position. But both have hard times. Let's keep it all friendly and hope, people from different platforms lower their swords. Looking forward to the next gen. Peace!
@UltraVideoGamer Hilariously out of touch. They only made genre defining FPS, TPS and racing games lol. Next time you save your game without having to buy a memory card, you can thank Xbox!
@UltraVideoGamer I couldn't agree more. Microsoft only seems to be interested in gaming so they can peddle apps and services that have little to do with gaming whereas they've done next to nothing to further actual gameplay. I feel like you could erase Xbox from history in its entirety and nothing of value would be lost.
@UltraVideoGamer hey it's all good for you to like your metroidvanias, but you seem disingenuous saying "I really have got nothing against that, I hope every gamer has fun regardless of their taste or platform." After you started the flame saying xbox has contributed nothing to gaming.
I do not have an Xbox, and looking from afar it seems, less a handful of games, if you have a gamer PC...then you have an Xbox as far as games go.
They're about to launch a brand new console so its perfectly normal for him to speak this way. I don't really see anything here that's controversial or unexpected. He's paid to help sell Xboxs and making it clear that Xbox games go on that console is part of that. He clearly sees some sort of confusion that would potentially take away from the new consoles launch if some in the market think Xbox games are coming to the Switch.
I own all 3 consoles and the Xbox and the Switch are what I play most. I'd love to see a combo of the two, but it is not in the cards and I doubt it ever will be.
@Cacophony It's also what the Smash bros presenter said during the Banjo in smash bros direct. If you want to play Banjo Kazooie, buy an Xbox.
It isn't Spencer's job to sell Switch games. I think the expectation of games coming to Switch isn't exclusive to Microsoft but a reflection of the Switch's success.
The switch pro controller other than gyro and I get some people think is a big deal, is a carbon copy of a xbox 360 controller. I don't even own an Xbox anymore. I own 4 switches but there's plenty I miss about my xbox. I'd wager if xbox didn't get rid of system link for xbox live I'd likely own four xboxs.
Yeah, Microsoft, go ahead and pretend your home consoles are going to have a market outside of the US... it's a shame, but the reality is that Japan'll never embrace the series of systems, so, they'll need to /really/ get that US market.
That said, I /do/ have a short list of games I'd like to see on Switch.
-Rare Replay, Switch Edition
-Halo: The Master Chief Collection
-Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Just those three, really.
...I don't want to buy a whole console for three games, though.
Remember when this site got rid of the multiple downvote icon because they thought it incited bullying not thinking the button at least helped against complete trolling.
@Heavyarms55 The switch wont be able to run next gen stuff. 5.5GB/s loading. The worlds will be huge.
@Cacophony The weird issue with Rare Replay, is that a lot of Nintendo fans actually want a unique Nintendo version, with the DKC trilogy, DK64, Star Fox Adventures, Diddy Kong Racing, ect, in place of there Xbox exclusive titles.
That excerpt was physically painful to read. Who the hell redacts like that?
I thought it was a dumb call by MS to release games, even if smaller indie ones, on Switch to begin with. And more and more I'm convinced Nintendo is the only one that gets what a true exclusive is all about. You want the latest hit Nintendo game? Have to have its platform, you know it's not going elsewhere. With MS, and Sony now too, you can get the games on PC, and once MS extended the olive branch to Nintendo, it devalued the Xbox brand further. I actually hope this is Phil Spencer getting MS back into a mindset of 'Xbox Game Studio-published titles are for Xbox and PC alone.'
@LinkSword I've touched it up a little. If you're interested, here's the time stamp from the video: https://youtu.be/p8-lszhflhQ?t=1600
@UltraVideoGamer "I don't feel like Xbox has really added anything constructive to the videogames industry" ... Really? Are you delusional? They literally defined the blueprint for online gaming and social networking on console, created Achievement Points, were first to add a Hard Drive in their console - all of which Sony later copied and Nintendo stubbornly doesn't do or struggles to do correctly.
@Heavyarms55 I think MS would make MORE money by releasing on both switch and Xbox, with the switch of course having downgraded versions. But oh well.
@Trajan I'm not really impressed by anything "next gen" yet. Really really not.
But that aside, that's not what I was suggesting. There's been talk of things ports of the old Halo and Fable games to Switch, and things like Rare Replay - things that MS has already made loads of money on, but could be sold to new audiences on Switch and things the Switch could assuredly handle.
That also said, I never really expected those things to happen, but those rumors aren't surprising because for the better part of the last 2 years, Nintendo and MS had been on surprisingly good terms.
Sure xbox, hit me.
XB: No XBOX series X exclusives for 2 years.
Fans: Aaaaaand....we're back to Nintendo
An “Xbox-level expectation for fans”? So they want people to have lower expectations then?
@Heavyarms55 in comparison the world you view in a current gen console is about 500mb, so next gen is capable of world and detail 10 times greater. It will be insane, but we haven't seen it yet.
A lot of that is the switch rumor mill disappointing themselves. If you want to play Xbox hames get an Xbox.
Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are all on friendly terms. Or at least it appears that way.
@sixrings I have no hate for the XBox, but credit where credit is due, Nintendo had a hands-free controller for the NES. Microsoft love to act like they're the first to market disability-friendly controllers, but they're decades late to that particular achievement.
@yuwarite
Um...
Sorry for interrupting, but i think i understand what is @UltraVideoGamer really concerned from Xbox.
I think he said that Xbox still doesn't have very "Must Buy" games from their studio.
Nintendo's IP are the biggest selling part as oppose Xbox 1st party games that still very less appealing to certain customers.
Xbox have tons of 3rd party games and indies but almost 99% of them are same as PS4 or PC Steam have, so not really interesting deal since i can go to PS4 or Switch version to play multi release games.
The beefy specs are not really important if the machine doesn't have games that we "must" to buy and play them. I don't want to waste my money for Xbox One if until today I only have two Xbox One games that caught my interest.
Back to topic.
As Xbox decision to give some their games to Nintendo Switch (We already got Minecraft, Ori, Super Lucky's Tale), the more they do it the more less appealing their 1st party Xbox games to be played on Xbox machine. If i can play New Super Luckys Tale on Nintendo Switch with some improvements and portability, why should i buy Super Lucky's Tale Xbox One version that still lack of improvements ?
Homework for Microsoft to not boasting the specs, but they should focus on how to attract more customers by providing their 1st party games with very appealing gameplay from kids to adults. They should learn from Nintendo and Nintendo can learn from Microsoft about Online Play Infrastructure.
@sixrings Credit where it's due, while MS might have made it popular and them better, none of those thing were first done by MS.
@Trajan I'm not really interested in buying a console just for a couple games. MS only has a tiny number of MS exclusive series that interest me.
I give them a lot of credit for the backward compatibility they seem to be pushing, but as things stand, neither PS5 no XboxX look impressive to me. Lot's of talk of specs but they have no shown what those specs are good for yet. And frankly better graphics are a given for a new console. I'm interested in what they do different or better in terms of actual game design and so far all I see is "they might be able to do bigger and more immersive worlds, here is an example: __________________ See how great that is?"
@Heavyarms55 Bit late, but right on the money. For all we know, Rare wanted to remake an older Zelda for Series X and Nintendo said no - thus creating Everwild.
And I do wish the relationship would continue. Yeah yeah, the box matters... but, oh, I would do nearly anything to get a legit Halo port on the Switch.
I mean come on! Five outta the six games in the MCC are from the 360 days - and the only one that isn't, 2 Anniversary, was based off an original Xbox title. And considering that the Switch can run the goddamn Witcher 3, I fail to see how a port of old popular titles could do MS any harm.
It would introduced Nintendo-only gamers to a globally-adored franchise that's a part of gaming history... and one with a brand new game out at Christmas that, you guessed it, is only on Xbox and Windows.
More (old) ports equals more fans. More fans equals more people invested in John's story. More people invested in John's story equals more sales of Halo Infinite and - by extension - more Xboxes sold at Christmas (or whenever Infinite launches at this point).
It's a win-win for us all and, for a company of Microsoft's size, it wouldn't take much. C'mon Phil - let us Nintendo fans finish this fight.
He sounds envious that Nintendo Switch gets more attention than the xbox.
I don't believe this for a second. Watch as the master chief collection gets revealed at the E3 replacement this year. Stopping now would go against everything that Phil Spencer has been trying to set up at this point. And yes, I do believe that MS asked for Nintendo franchises on Xbox, but not new entries. That's probably the reason why we haven't gotten Rare Replay. I would completely believe if a leak said that there was a completed build for the switch but Phil Spencer wanted the 4 classic DKC games and Diddy Kong Racing on Xbox in return.
@sportvater Right there with ya, man. Spencer's great and our future's looking bright!
Also a bit off-topic: Is MW/Warzone 2019 any good? Everyone down at school adores it, but I'm more of a Doom/Halo man myself...
@UltraVideoGamer You... do know we single-player stuff too, right? Halo in particular is known for its great campaigns and 99% of third-parties support both Xbox and PS. (Nothing against PS fans, of course... hell, you guys make me jealous at times! 😜)
@muscpt And Windows is owned by MS, so it all works out in the end. 😃
@Spike6958 Why?
Yeah, can the Kinect crap... but are we really supposed to hate Nuts & Bolts THAT much?
@JasmineDragon Really? You got more info on that?
@Alpha-2002 And the way I see it, by giving Nintendo fans the older titles, they are catching their attention and pushing them toward buying an XboxX for the new entries in the series. And it's a way to make more money off of older titles that they can then turn around and use for their own newer project for the XboxX.
And on a side note, I really enjoyed the Kinect. In university I used to walk by my roommate and say "Xbox Bing potatoes" all the time and the thing would back out of the game, open Bing, and search up potatoes. XD
@Heavyarms55 Precisely. I can guarantee you that, if someone bought Hellblade on Switch, they are now immediately more interested in it's next-gen sequel... now a Microsoft exclusive.
The Xbox brand has just gone absolutely downhill for me since Xbox one. Their redesign of the interface over the years with 360 just got worse and worse, showing they had no idea what customers wanted. Now it’s a hardware race that leaves quality games as an afterthought... Nintendo has the chance to just destroy the competition if only they could maintain a solid flow of AAA first party titles.
If they can get BOTW2 out, and a Metroid, and maybe even another Mario Odyssey out, it could really be a funeral for Xbox.
Sony will stay around due to Asian markets and their history, but XBOX won’t survive.
If COVID19 lasts as well, a lot of people with financial constraints will also be limited from purchasing any new $500+ system...
LOL. He's just like "can we get some attention for XBox stuff?". I love how it's only hype when Nintendo is involved.
@TimboSlice Umm you act like Halo Infinite, Whatever annual Forza will be there, and Hellblade 2 aren’t things. And that doesn’t include the other studios that they acquired. Also, You can‘t tell me there isn’t going to be an Outerworlds 2 or the New Fable game into in the works. All of these are known franchises with already stable fanbases.
Not to mention there are plenty of people that prefer realistic FPS and racing games that require analogue triggers neither of which play well on Nintendo systems. 30 fps? GameCube controllers that lack extra z buttons? And yes I know this will be a shock to this forum, but some people do love native voice chat, and the lack there of is a big deal.
As for a lack of 500 dollars guess what MS already said no upgrade required for at least year to two. So that blows that argument out of the water. If anything The current world climate makes Gamepass more appealing.
You can hate on Xbox all you want that’s your choice.
Can’t stand Spector or Xbox in the slightest. I can’t even recall enjoying any of their titles or systems.
Except Phil, Matt, and Aaron all stayed Xbox will no longer have any exclusives, and it's been that way for 5 years now with zero indication of it changing. The Series X has zero exclusives, Microsoft is still a 3rd party at this point, and Phil now appears to be trying to backpedal. You've been too cocky these last 3 years Phil, all you care about is how many different ways you can make your fanbase pay for the same game yet another time with another subscription. You fool nobody but Xbox fans, and even they are finally getting smart to your false advertising, misdirection and blanket PR speak.
Just cut your losses, offer Xbox Live to all platforms, and enjoy the stress being lifted.
@Averagewriter what do you mean the best version of castlevania or final fantasy on xbox? they're all the same versions. ports of old games and they appeared on Nintendo or Sony consoles first.
"Xbox-level of expectation":
The equivalent to trying to swing something to kill a fly. You know its a bad idea, and you're probably going to break something, but do you do it anyway because that fly is just so damn annoying.
with this relationship i hope nintendo will not 'share' BoTW in xbox machine in the future.
MS are good at doing 180’s!
(And 360’s lol)
Can people stop telling big videogame companies what they should do? Once upon a time, people were telling Nintendo to make mobile games. Now Nintendo's making them, and the in-app purchases are freaking nuts!
Just put rare replay on switch that’s all we want
It is good to have articles like this one It let's fanboys let out their hate for a company/console.
MS xbox left the inbox for Quality games and those 1st person will not support your gaming for long. Lack of diversity games from kids to older gamers is where the gaming market is now. Either you make for this or die not doing so. Take RingFit with CV19 going there no where to be found now try that with xbox-there nothing. So xbox own lacks of diversity games are their own fault for not Investing in but only buying companies that only goes so far before braindrain happens. Developers are going to go for the consoles that is going to give them Returns. As I always tell people can you eat the codes and live to program again. Nintendo success wasn't by accident they live and die by Innovations and Outside Box Thinking something MS xbox might want to do. Even in charts xbox consoles are far behind PS consoles that should tell you something how bad they are doing. For all the Specs those do little to sell game. One can build a Gaming PC Desktop that will blow xbox out of the water for the same games. So don't go telling me xbox has power when a Simple Gaming Rig Deskop/Laptop will blow xbox from their own same game.
I like Phil. he's plain talking and comes across as genuine (obviously I don't know him!) There is a huge demand for some sort of Rare celebration compilation to happen on Switch. In all honesty I see nothing but good from this happening. It would raise the profile of Rare and be a huge poster for Xbox. Master Chief Collection would shake the industry! Possibly, one of the biggest events to happen in our hobby for decades. It would certainly let Master Chief reach more people, much in the same way Nintendo is trying to get Mario in the limelight. However, these are 'third place' solutions to companies wanting more return from their games. If Xbox series doesn't recapture the 360 days, then there is more likely hood of these coming to Switch (a system not directly competing with them unlike the PlayStation, which would further compound their problem.)
Microsoft really dropped the ball with Xbox One.
I bought one, and over its life, I feel its been a pretty average experience.
It's not even bad hardware, just the exclusives haven't been there.
I found myself on the Wii U a lot more, and now of course the switch.
I eventually got the PlayStation 4 Pro, and it's great.
But I do feel a little bit late to the party.
The library of games seems endless.
Some really interesting titles to play.
Can't help but feel Xbox is an irrelevant brand now.
I think this comment may be being misinterpreted.
He's basically saying the current situation of uncertainty and rumour is too vague, and that he would prefer things to be more black and white.
Whether that means more or less Xbox games coming to Switch isn't particularly addressed here. But ironically, he is being vague himself in this respect, so hadn't really improved the ambiguity of it all yet.
C'mon Phil, what are you actually saying here? Where's the clarity?
@Anti-Matter Exactly. Microsoft's first party lineup is thoroughly unappealing, and most of what I want on Xbox is already on PS4 and now Switch. So what is there to get me to buy an Xbox? Switch is pretty much driven by its exclusives and even PS4 has a respectable lineup of first party games, but Xbox just doesn't care all that much so why should I care about them?
@Bolt_Strike their line up may be unappealing to some. While plumbers and boys in green suits are unappealing to others. It doesn't change that xbox has contributed to video gaming.
@sixrings The thing is that Nintendo has much more beyond plumbers in overalls, they have an extremely diverse catalog that spans a multitude of genres. Microsoft doesn't, and they have several glaring omissions in their library.
@Alpha-2002 Honestly, a big reason behind it was that the 360 titles like Nuts & Bolts were often used as reasons why Rare Replay couldn't come to Switch because they are simply the 360 versions running via emulation, and not full ports to the Xbox One.
People started responding to that reasoning with "well I'd rather have there Nintendo exclusive games in the collection over them anyway", not understanding that it would probably be just as much work to get those Nintendo titles onto the Switch as it would be to get the 360 games onto it and that Nintendo would probably never let their games be put onto another studios collection, even if it's exclusive to there system because they probably want to keep them, especially the DKC Trilogy, to slowly drop onto the SNES Online app.
@Bolt_Strike well although I don't own my xbox anymore I miss their first person shooters, and racing games. Both genres severely lacking on Nintendo. Just as Microsoft is severely lacking more Disney like experiences.
There's no point in arguing preferences but it's ridiculous not to give xbox credit for the things they have done right through the years. Sure they haven't been around since the Atari days so maybe they have perfected more than invented but again backward compatibility, adaptive controller, xbox live, games with gold, gamepass, their controller designs have all been helpful to the industry.
Fyi on my 360 days I could sign onto my xbox live account from my windows phone or computer and message people online. Sure sounds similar to what Nintendo is doing now. Again that Nintendo pro controllers since the Wii u sure looks similar to the Xbox controller. Even if there was a touchless controller for the nes (I'm sure that was a failed third party maybe mad catz controller) it wasn't backwards compatible but hey you can use a adaptive controller on the switch. That nes online app sure looks like a really retro version of gamepass.
Even when Nintendo tries to copy xbox it's still so poorly executed anyone should give credit for how well Microsoft did it. Why can't I have a subscription service for current gen Nintendo games. Why can't I have native voice chat and why doesn't my switch pro controller have a Mic jack? Why doesn't Nintendo have its own adaptive controller. Why can't I message my friends from my console where as xbox and ps has keyboard attachments for their controllers.
Furiously treading water over there at MS, I like it. If this new box isn't a massive, 360-style success they will absolutely put more games on Switch.
@sixrings i wouldn’t call games with gold or game pass innovative. the first being your typical supermarket savings program and the latter just being a sub for games. these are more business innovations than gaming as they steady the revenue stream out. i also don’t see how you can credit them with inventing chat, it was here long before xbox and team speak / ventrillo definitely beat them too it. the one thing you listed that is actually innovative is the adaptive controller but even this seems like a marketing stunt
@yuwarite if they defined the blueprint then how come us PC gamers have been getting along fine and continue to do so without xbox services? I would argue steam has done more for gaming than xbox
@tekknik you get credit for making things main stream. They made standards which PlayStation has since duplicated or are in the process of duplicating.
Sure I am talking a lot about quality of life add on and services but again I think discussing the games here is going to be difficult since we generally like Nintendo games. That doesn't mean that there isn't a segment of the population which likes xbox games and sees things like the halo series and forza series as being innovative. But this again is all subjective.
Nintendo fans like to mock xbox fans and ps fans as fanboys. But when you can't acknowledge the good the competition is doing and be so dismissive I don't know how one can be considered unbias.
I'm happy Nintendo is doing well but out of nowhere there is plenty of people acting as if Nintendo has always dominated and they have been Nintendo fans since day one and never faultered. Remember the 64? It didn't dominate. The GameCube didn't dominate. Anyone remember the Wii U. Nintendo isn't without its own failures. Sure xbox did poorly this generation but that doesn't mean they are doomed just as one bad generation doesn't make nintendoomed.
@Averagewriter the MSX is a pc, not a console
Just here watching people say Xbox has added nothing to gaming, thinking back to the great times I’ve had with Gears 4 and 5, Halo games, the Forza Horizon series*, all the games I played because of their Backwards-Compatibility-done-right Approach and all the games I played on Gamepass.
(*Plus Project Gotham, Rallisport Challenge, Crackdown, Sunset Overdrive, Midtown Madness, Crimson Skies, Amped and Quantum Redshift)
The sad part is they could potentially sell waaay more units per title on switch than their own system. They need to fix the lack of hardware sales if they are truly "Xbox first" because with every title simultaneously releasing on PC already and select titles on Switch...what do I even need the Xbox for? If they want to be a service great, if they want to be a major console player great- it is going to be very hard to be successful at both
I kinda wish some Nintendo exclusives were brought over to other systems, like astral chain, bayonetta 2, etc and etc
@sixring The bitter irony is that the Xbox One still sold way better then the Wii U did.
Rumors have the Xbox One finishing around 50 million when this gen finally ends.
Below the PS4, but not that bad overall.
The Wii U, on the other hand, finished with 13 million units sold, and barely beat the Saturn, Dreamcast, and Master System. Nintendo fanboys will never admit it, but the Wii U's sales are in the garbage tier when it comes to game systems.
So, this arrogance that Microsoft suddenly needs Nintendo and they need to put their games on the Switch is amazing.
Reading these comments honestly blows my mind. People want Halo on the Switch. Then why don't we make it fair. Master Chief in exchange for Mario on the Xbox?
Sounds like a good deal? But the same people who want to pretend the Xbox brand is dying and that they need to port their games ASAP to the Switch would be up in arms in a Mario game ever showed up on an Xbox.
The Xbox One struggled this gen, but it's not an outright failure either. It blew the Wii U out of the water, and it sold millions of units. If the Xbox One was a failure, third-part developers would have abandoned the system long ago.
In fact, the Xbox One still gets games that don't release on the Switch.
The Xbox brand may be weaker this gen, but it's still a strong brand with a loyal fanbase. People may be shocked by how well the next Xbox does.
I own an Xbox One, and I enjoy playing it more than my PS4. I'm not ashamed to admit that.
@Caryslan
Generations apart yeah, but XB1 also comfortably outsold the N64 and Gamecube and will finish ahead of the SNES.
@electrolite77 It also outsold the Sega Genesis and Atari 2600, both of which are considered major successes in their respective generations and classic consoles whose legacies endure to today..
It also outsold the first Xbox, which means the Xbox One is the second best selling system in the Xbox family.
As I said before, it's behind the PS4 and Switch, but its also not a total failure either. Microsoft made some bad mistakes that cost them this generation, and it looks like they are working to address some of those issues.
First party? They have been buying up new studios to make games for the Xbox Series X.
I'm not going to ignore the fact that Microsoft struggled this gen, but some of the comments on here act like the Xbox One was a massive failure that puts them in the same hot seat that Sega and Atari used to sit in.
But the irony is that Nintendo was the one who had a system that flopped so badly this generation, they pretty much had to do a reboot with the Switch in the same gen just to stay alive.
The Xbox One endured and fought all the way to the end of this gen.
So, maybe the Xbox brand is not as much as a failure as people seem to think.....
@Nyne11Tyme what an antiquated thought process. Xbox is more than just a “machine” they’ve made multiple comments that it’s all “Xbox” and whether you play on PC or Xbox the reality is they are getting your money and counting your numbers. Thinking in terms of pure hardware and you ignore how many new Gamepass subscribers they are earning each day the world is on lock down. That’s where the money is at anyway.
@Averagewriter a lot of it had to do with what games people like to play... unfortunately. If you are someone that hates shooters and racers, then Xbox is worthless to you and contributed nothing. It’s a similar reasons why people that don’t like animated styled games can’t see the Nintendo for more than kids machine. People let their personal preference make judgement calls without looking at the overall picture. The fact is people still want to play my machine is better than yours when the fact is that no company would have innovated of the other ones didn’t exist.
@Caryslan
Yeah I don't get it. At their first attempt the OG Xbox outsold Nintendos equivalent, all 3 of their systems have outsold the Gamecube and Wii U. XB1 had a terrible start but they've turned it around really well. BC has been a real plus, Game Pass is great value, they've put out some really good games. Theyre in a strong enough position to be trying to turn XBox into a service where by the end Atari and Sega were just putting out fires. Their third-party support has never faltered. It's impossible in my eyes to see them as a failure at this point.
As much as I love my Switch, putting CupdHead and Ori on the system was a move I couldn't possibly understand. I still think it was an error, despite the qualities of this two titles.
It really was a strange move, giving a very bad message to Xbox users while confusing Switch users ("can we please also have Halo ?" wait, what ?).
Off course, this kind of emblematic title should be exclusive to their respective platform.
I want for microsoft to learn from Nintendo, that all their exclusives should be only on XBox.
At this point i am pulled more towards Xbox-X than PS5.
So i am hoping Microsoft goes all out at launch.
And hoping for a new Killer instinct soon after.
@Bobobiwan - The thing is, both Ori and Cuphead are indie titles, not part of Microsoft's core 1st party line-up, so porting those games probably doesn't hurt Microsoft that much. If, on the other hand, they ported Forza, Gears or even worse, Halo, then that would be a different story but at the moment, those titles have remained away from competitor systems so for now the advantages of their strategy probably outweigh what minor damage it may do.
On the article, that's a fair enough statement to make, especially given the imminent launch of the new Xbox at the end of the year, you're probably gonna want to focus more on what your product brings to the table than what titles you're releasing on your competitor's systems, even if you are on friendly-ish terms with them.
Someone just sneak the Banjo and Conkers games on there before he notices
Just bring over RARE REPLAY COLLECTION for nostalgic Nintendo fans.
That would be satisfactory.
If you want anything else, you can play on Xbox or PC.
Hard to imagine Xbox "fans" but I guess there are such people
I could care less. I find a lot of microsoft's ips to be pretty mediocre aside from cuphead.
Rare Replay is literally the only Xbox game I want on switch. Not worth buying an Xbox just for that though
@TimboSlice erm what? You must be very delusional..... Xbox one has sold more units then the 360. It's not going anywhere.
Also Sony is not really in the best financial situation was Microsoft has way more money to to funnel into the Xbox division
Sorry but Xbox is not going anywhere anytime soon
Now about the UI you are complaining about there plenty that like it and plenty that down. Just bc you dislike it doesn't mean they arnt listening lol you can't play everyone. Let's talk about Sony sh*t show of a UI there they can't get right if you wanna complain about something
All in all every console has its goods and has its bass but don't be that person that thinks their opinion is a fact since again you can't please everyone and the loudest people are the ones that arnt happy so you see them more often then the hundreds or others that are enjoying their time
@The-Chosen-one as pointed out Ori and Cup head are not First Party companies and are indie companies.
Rare replay would be the only game I would want for the switch, that way I can get rid of my N64. Why should I buy an Xbox for a collection that costs 30 dollars, when mircosoft can get that money through switch sales. That or rare replay is the only thing Xbox has to justify consumers to get an xbox.

You are right MS contributed nothing of consequence to the gaming space....
It might not be “innovated” but Microsoft is certainly doing a damn good job of getting into to peoples hands.
@Fido007 I miss playing forza. Maybe not for you but for some people forza is enough reason to get a xbox. And this winter comes halo. Nintendo hasn't done a proper fps since 64 goldeneye and perfect dark which rare made. It seems the common thread is Nintendo gamers like local coop split screen games or single person adventure which is why PlayStation seems compelling. For myself I get all my single person adventure games from my nintendo. I don't feel a need for a PlayStation. However Microsoft offers lots of online multiplayer games which Nintendo doesn't. Everyone is different but let's not dismiss some people's preferences and let's not dismiss xbox contribution to the industry.
@sixrings forza is on pc as well as halo. If Xbox has that great of a line up, then having switch users get one little video game collection from nintendo's past on it shouldn't hurt Xbox at all then? Why they being like this?
@UltraVideoGamer
1) I can’t be a “man baby” thanks for assuming gender. Sorry no. That’s rude!
2) Point me where “I” specifically turned it juvenile?
3) Now your confusing. First you dismiss anything MS had done. Now when people point to the things you can’t dismiss, you speak “game design”. Gaming is more than game design, story design, visuals, etc. gaming is an experience. You can’t be dismiss of something in one breath and then backpedal in another? The point is you don’t like XBoX and your willing to ignore anything that doesn’t fit into your narrow view point.
4) You are the one that has a favorite console all of my post have mentioned all consoles. In fact in one post I point out that each company wouldn’t innovated had the others not existed. As a point of reference I’m handheld Nintendo GIRl first but I also see each company for all the good and the bad that they do.
You on the other hand only care about one thing and if it did fit into that viewpoint you ignore it.
Sorry the world doesn’t exist in bubble.
And stop telling people to have a good day to make yourself look good. Passive aggressive behavior looks good on no one.
@UltraVideoGamer
1) Sure I’ll stop. I’m totally sorry that I simply pointed out that it’s rude to assume anyone that likes Xbox must be male. My bad I’ll continue to allow you to misgender me because you can’t get past it. BTW it’s Xbox not Y-box.
2)Just because you don’t like the truth doesn’t make it juvenile. However the name calling you do that not juvenile at all.
3) Actually you said you didn’t see them adding anything substantial to gameplay but clearly they have when the above mentioned girl from 2) wouldn’t be playing as easily as she can with an adaptive controller. There is more to core gameplay than how the game plays but also with what. But it’s okay to ignore it because you don’t use it.
4) Right so you what are you doing here? I mean the conversation is about Xbox games on the Switch. Which you deliberately didn’t mention.
5) Apparently anyone that disagrees with you is “heated” ^.~
@Donutman
no i don't think that wil ever happen, but they could give microsoft some rights for donkey kong
@UltraVideoGamer
1) see: “man baby”
2) Pointing out something isn’t being juvenile. You started the hurt by thinking it was a “cheap shot” then you go further by name calling “man-babies” isn’t mature not matter how you want to make it so.
3) Actually you mention “core gameplay” did you not? The adaptive controller effects her “core gameplay” it doesn’t effect the overall game design for you but as I pointed out it is experience that matters and without that controller she would have a different experienced. You can’t pick and choose one part of an experience it doesn’t work that way.
4) You can have a different opinion I never once argued that you couldn’t like or dislike a companies game designs. I’m saying there is more to a gaming experience than just game design.
5) The only thing I got “heated” about was your name calling. The rest was in defense of point above that your bubble of gaming and what constitutes impact is “game design”only. It’s an incredibly flawed viewpoint. I think the gaming experience is more than that. All elements count.
Again I state none of the companies would be here without the others to push them. All of them have taken loses Wii U, PS Vita, for that matter Sony sells hardware at a lose just like MS does. And Sony did the same thing MS did only with Handhelds. For that matter Nintendo forces peripherals just like the Kinect or are joycon coming with D-pass these days? I don’t think you are mocking but it’s hard to see your Critical viewpoint. Perhaps a little less name calling in the future?
I have an Xbox One S and hardly use it, so I can leave most of those games to be honest, plus they hardly sell on the Switch console anyway.
@graysoncharles thank you and point. Honestly.
LOL
What is going on here ? 🤭
@Caryslan true about the WiiU as far as system sales, but it had a pretty high attach rate and some pretty decent software sales.
The only thing I’d like is Killer Instinct. They can keep the rest
@sixrings i think my point being it seems like you’re ignoring the contributions from the PC side of things, which has had more influence on the gaming industry than xbox.
@PALversusNTSC which is just as likely as Mario.
@tekknik perhaps but I may be wrong but consoles are what moves the industry. Even if all xbox did was control c control v into the console, the things you suggest pc did first, they should get credit for making it mainstream. If copying and pasting was so easy than PlayStation would have as good a service package as the Xbox and Nintendo would have something at least on par with the 360. Yet PlayStation is behind and so is Nintendo.
the one MS game i really hope that gets a switch port is Gears of War.
@sixrings a quick note, most of the best selling games of all time have been on PC. I’ve not heard of any console game making an indie dev a billionaire.
there are other considerations for why nintendo doesn’t have proper voice chat in game, the console is for kids. not a lot of parents want their kid talking to strangers on the internet. the rest of what xbox does is so basic there are companies that exist to do the same thing on pc. what about steam? an entire graphics library exists because of them. their matchmaking services exist for all devs to use as well. and the workshop? xbox still doesn’t have modding. really what you should be praising microsoft for is cross platform. that is, imo, all theyve done worth notice these days. let’s not even get into the numbers, there are still more PC gamers worldwide than console. if you’re focusing entirely on xbox thinking “gee they’re innovative” then you’ve missed a massive chunk of the industry doing more interesting things
I'm not gonna lie. I have Rare Replay on Xbox One, but I think I'd feel more at home playing it on a Nintendo system.
