As you might have heard, Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush have finally locked in the launch date for Streets of Rage 4. It's arriving on the Switch and multiple other platforms on 30th April and will retail for £22.49 / $24.99.
Alongside this announcement was the first look at the game's Battle Mode - which we noted was a legacy experience returning from Streets of Rage 2 and 3. What's also been uncovered for the title now is a day-one update.
While the size of the game has already been confirmed as 3.1 GB, according to information from the official PlayStation servers, you'll need to clear up an extra 1 GB of free space for some combo system improvements, bug fixes, and "global polish" of music and sound design.
Will you be taking to the streets when the fourth entry arrives on 30th April? Comment down below.

The time until release is going to be even longer with this quarantine.
Won't have to download that update with the limited run games version....at least, I hope not with the amount of space left on my micro sd card, lol.
Anyone know what's happening with Windjammers 2. Confirmed for 2019 in 2018 direct, delayed to early 2020 in September on PAX West 2019, and heard nothing about it since.
With Dotemu hyping about a lot about SoR 4 recently, odd that nothing about Windjammers 2 is mentioned in months.
They should just finish the game completely before releasing, I hate day one updates, theres no rush to release it
I can't wait to listen to the OST of this game! It sounds so good! And play the game as well! 12 more days!
@geni53yr7 Agreed but...whatcha gonna do..?🤷♂️
Please be good! Please be good! Let's not have another Sonic 4 where it doesn't live up to the classics.
Hope LRGs physical release includes the day 1 patch since it hasn't even begun production yet.
@link3710 @SheldonRandoms : While that is my hope too (and there's no reason why they wouldn't), but if any subsequent patches are released, then we would need to download that 1GB patch and then some, as the entirety of software updates are installed, even if a more recent version of the software is included on the cartridge (it doesn't just download the difference between the version on the cartridge and the most recent version, unfortunately).
The size of the "patch" is also ridiculously large considering that the game proper is only 3.1GB.
@ReWane haven’t heard much about Windjammers 2 lately either. Probably focused more on SOR4, but I bet Windjammers 2 will still be in good hands.
@Silly_G Yeah, that sucks. At least have the first patch on cart would be far more future proof long term but...
@link3710 my hopes as well.
As long as the game doesn't had performance problem I'm okay with it. They did handle the Wonder Boy remake very well so I can't really complain much about this.
Well it's a good thing that it's coming out on Game Pass, I don't mind this kind of thing on Xbox.
If there is a patch this big on such a small game, may as well make it download only.
It hasn't been released yet but there's already a patch because it's not polished enough... Why not just fix the file and launch it correctly instead of making people do 2 downloads?
It's not like it has been a rushed development. At all. And if it's not been released they could have fixed it and say "hey, it's going to be 4GB, not 3GB as we expected", right?
Glad I declined the physical option now.
Can't wait for this. This could be my game of the year. Hopefully it will not disappoint!
A day-one 1Gb patch......wow.
Yeah I agree with you all, this game has not been rushed so why wasn’t it on cart or disc, but anyway 11 more days. So excited for this, I keep thinking back to 94 where sor 3 was my summer holiday good times. There just looks like an awesomely replay able fun game . Can’t wait for that soundtrack, I really want to hear that slow tempo song that was in the 5 minute retro video. X x x. Xx x x x x x x soon x x x x x x
This may take a seat on the wait for a sale list. Day one patches should be avoidable, just delay the release.
I just bought Friday the 13th for $15 Canadian. It reminds me waiting for a sale price will give added joy when you end up loving the game. I expect to love SoR4 so I may be disappointed. I think it's wisest for me to wait for a sale on it.
I'll never understand why people get so worked up over a day 1 patch. It's a common practice these days. 1 GB update? That is small and nothing to complain about.
@Shade_Koopa just because something is a common occurrence doesn't mean it is the correct way of doing things. I see this as more people willing to wait for this game to be "complete" on a cartridge. Remember when Wii and PSP games would have system updates on the discs as well as the game? This is like the total opposite of that. Publishers lock in dates and send out unfinished games to die far too often, then wonder why they don't make as much money as they estimated.
1gb is fine. There's much worst out there.
Like LA Noire needing a 14 gig update with the physical version.
And Rockstar wonder why it never sold lol...
I’m confused if they have battle mode but not a survival mode with infinite waves of enemies, SOR is one of the one beatemups where a survival mode works because of its defensive options and also not being designed as a coin munching arcade game.
@FargusPelagius but that’s how game development works now... it wouldn’t surprise me if the day one patch related to the ‘classic’ characters and the ‘battle mode’ which came later in development.
The options are we stick to how things used to work and everything gets shipped day one and that’s it; or, we have day one patch’s to iron out glitches that only became know later on in development and too late to put in place before the game ships (obviously going to happen with more complex games and with indie games where the dev teams are smaller), with the added benefit that additional patches can added QoL improvements based on player feedback or even additional gameplay elements.
Honestly, complaining about patches is like biting the hand that feeds you.
@ReWane Well i guess now that this is done, they'll get back to that.
Switch game day one patches never really bugged me. I have a sd card and know how to make the most of my little storage. They are never Ps4/Xbone games big anyway.
@geni53yr7 Agreed
@Moistnado It is download only, save an LRG release.
Not bothered at all about a day 1 patch. Will probably check out some reviews before I commit though. Price seems reasonable, I'm certainly interested.
@SheldonRandoms most likely you will. Any day one updates will not be added most likely to it.
@Ajent honestly I would rather a company release a game that's done period. Test your product fully before release.
@Shade_Koopa it implies the company is rushing the product out the door and in the end still giving you something unfinished, especially for a physical copy. There is no point in selling a game physically if it isn't all on the cartridge or disk. It just defeats the purpose. This is shady business practice by these companies.
Man I want the Limited Run edition. But I don't want to wait....
And they have the 64gb cart? Why aren't those being used? Not everyone can afford a 1tb card right now with it's sky high price. I could but that would cost as much as getting a Switch itself. Those saying they have space are fooling themselves here even at 400gb I haven't loaded all my backlogs fearing the space shortage plus they updates they will download and DLC to come right along.
@gcunit Dude the physical release won't be release until late this year. I'm sure by that time it would come fully patch that is unless Demu or Lizardcube doesn't make a second update.
@SwitchForce Those Nintendo Switch game card aren't cheap though, even a 32gb game card would cost developer hundreds. Buying them in bulk just for one game would cost them thousands. This is the reason why most devs just choose to go digital first, make their money and then decide about a limited physical release later. Another problem why not many devs go the physical route is limited retail shelf availability. Not all physical games will sell in the casual market like Walmart and Target so most devs especially the indies choose to go the limited physical route whether through Limited Run Games, Super Rare Games, Play-Asia, or Strictly Limited Games where those companies handles the bulk cartridge purchase giving the devs a percentage in return royalty for marketing and selling their game.
@Dirty0814 that’s fine, you just might not get the product at all though in that case.
Like I say, there needs to be considerations for how development complexity has increased, especially for indie teams. They can’t hold a product in development forever just to iron out bugs that can easily be remedied with a post launch patch - they need to make money off said product. It isn’t being greedy, ‘rushing’ it or any other defamatory remark that anyone would want to sling at them - it’s the cold hard truth that running a company requires you to pay your staff (or else they’ll go somewhere else for employment) and invest in new tools and software for future products. If they don’t release the game by a certain point they start to see a loss in returns, which then affects the stability of the company relative to its size.
Plenty of really really good games get patches, so getting a patch is not an indication of quality either.
This kind of stuff really should've been included in the initial release to begin with. Delaying the game for a week or two would've been worth it in order to polish up the game for the time years in the future when people will be buying used copies of the physical release but can't update it after the servers have been shut down.
@retro_player_77 That would be great if the patch is included in the physical release, but if it is, then what's the point of a day one patch in the first place?! They could've just as easily updated the digital copy of the game once before releasing it instead of making everyone else do it one copy at a time.
@Ajent That's fine when they're fixing bugs and making updates based on issues discovered after release, but if they know about and are fixing these things before the release, then it makes much more sense to just include everything in the initial release. If they're going to have it all done by the initial release date anyway, then only a small delay at worst would be needed and wouldn't cut into the profits.
@BulbasaurusRex
Its a difficult one because a games never gonna be perfect on release. It's the nature of game development. You have to submit the game for release, and then you've got a month or so. In that time the Dev team will be constantly play testing it, and fixing anything they find. I much prefer a day 1 patch, to no patch at all, as it shows the team care. Back in the day we didn't have patches so were left with games with bugs permanently in the game. If they'd delayed it 2 weeks, they probably would have found something else that they could fix or polish.
This isn't always the case, like with sega rushing panzer dragoon out before the soundtrack was finished lol. I think we can all agree that was sega trying to make a quick buck. However when it's just bug fixes and balance changes I think thats fine.
@Wargoose No patch at all is indeed better than a day one patch if they just include those changes in the initial release. They can then patch the game all they want afterwards if any new problems are discovered. Given the size of the update, this can't just be things they discovered and decided to polish after submission. If they do find more stuff to polish during the delay, then they can keep working on them after the release and then issue a patch.
@BulbasaurusRex As at @Wargoose said... it’s perpetual. Leave release submission for two weeks and find a new bug/glitch. Leave it another two weeks then to fix that, but now you’ve found two more based on feedback from play testing. Leave it three weeks then... ah, crap! Now you’ve not paid your small team of staff for another month.
Orrrrrr... submit, release and patch day one and the devs who made that game for you to play can get paid.
(Edit: just seems your new comment - I’d hazard a guess that this patch is probably a few fixes but also for things like the classic characters/mode and the Battle Mode, which are recent additions - so think of it like free DLC).
@retro_player_77 Do you not know those buying the Physical are willing to pay to have that. Must be living retro days most would gladly pay for having more on cart including me. As they don't come cheap as it is already.
@BulbasaurusRex it depends how the games coded. I've installed balance patches for fighting games where it's been multiple gigs just for changing really minor things like the size of some hitboxes.
It'll be worth the wait for the LR physical copy IMO. All the updates and news just makes the wait more exciting IMO. Plus I dont do digital.
