After a cheeky tease in March, it's now official – on 7th May, the retro racer 80's Overdrive pulls up on the Switch eShop in North America, Europe, and multiple other locations. There's currently no word on the price.
If you enjoy classic racing games like Out Run and Top Gear or have played more recent releases like Horizon Chase Turbo, Insane Code's upcoming title should be your kind of racer. And if the name sounds familiar, that's because it was previously released on the 3DS eShop in 2017. Here's the official Twitter announcement:
According to the game's website, this 2D pixel art racer is designed to transport you back in time when 8-bit and 16-bit console and arcade games were in their prime.
You'll compete against opponents in a career mode, get chased by police, unlock new races, buy new cars, and upgrade them to improve the speed, acceleration, handling, and braking. There are even police radars and nitro to install. In addition to this is a time-attack mode and you can create your own tracks in the editor. This is all backed by "18 synth / retrowave" music scores.
If you'd like to learn more about 80's Overdrive, be sure to view our original 3DS review – we awarded it eight out of ten stars.

The 3D effect is great in games like this which is the only thing that would somewhat make me prefer it on 3DS, same as with Mutant Mudds. I do like the look of it though.
@Giygas_95 Completely agreed. This game is great on the 3DS, and the stereoscopic effect really adds to it. And also nice: the pixely graphics are less pronounced on the 3DS, making it look nicer, in my opinion.
@ThanosReXXX So you'd recommend the 3DS version over the Switch? I guess it's hard for me to want to buy a 3DS game nowadays since I primarily use my Switch.
Gonna double dip on it so to see how the game runs in HD. The 3DS version was nice so hopefully they implement some kind of local split screen multiplayer mode for this one.
Yes!! Can't wait!!
Yes and please.
Take my money
Oh nice, I missed this on 3DS, though now I am thinking of charging it up and trying it out...or waiting for Switch, if only there was cross-buy, I'd buy it on 3DS today knowing I'd get to also play on Switch next month.
This looks like so much fun. I’ve been on the fence for Outrun, but this looks better actually. More cars, tracks and the ability to upgrade your cars. What price should this game be? 10, 20 dollars?
Until these comments I had literally forgotten that my 3DS, which I play every day, has a 3D function. Hah.
Lol according to the speed of the car (260 mph) the trucks speed will be around 200 mph
I really loved this kind of games in arcades, but what I really miss is this kind of race and shoot co-op games. These were awesome!
It’s a fantastic game.
Had it on the 3ds and it's a bag of shoite so I wouldn't bother
@Giygas_95 Fully agreed here! I'd even go so far as to say, that I don't care for a Switch version. This and games like OutRun really look impressive on the 3DS, with a great sense of speed. If you remove that, well, all you are left with an okay retro-arcade racer, with a decent sense of style through out. Too bad many later 3DS games dropped the stereoscopic effect, just when the New3DS really had made it viable.
I'm still miffed that Persona Q2 and Radiant Historia just ignored it, even though it really helped bring the somewhat dead world of the other later EQ games at least somewhat to life. It also added desperately needed visual flair to the 1st Persona Q, given how static all of these games really are at heart. Every little bit helps, and a well implemented (not all were sadly) stereoscopic effect, can make a real difference.
I always considered myself a "core gamer" after a fashion, but given that most folks that would subscribe to that label seemed to really hate on any kind of innovation, be it 3D or motion controls ... whatever. I really LOVED playing Metroid Prime with pointer controls. Red Steel 2 equally was a mediocre game, elevated to something truly engaging thanks to it's excellent controls. Let's not even talk about Resident Evil 4, which was almost broken by the pointer's precision.
It's kind of annoying to see these games or similar ones, coming to Switch and at best we get Gyro controls to make due, when pointers are so much more precise and engaging due to apping a "natural" interaction for a shooter. I would also have killed for something like Hollow Knight to have an added 3D effect. Would have looked incredible I imagine, esp. paired with a higher res 720p display of the Switch.
Ah well, it is what it is
@Ralek85 Yeah, Metroid Prime Trilogy is without a doubt the best way to play those games. And man I wish the 3D effect could have carried on to the Switch. It's more than just a gimmick to me. Imagine HD Switch games with 3D...
First I was going to wait for a sale on 3DS, then they teased us about porting it to other consoles, but didn't happen. I was still hesitant and let some sales go, until I got it at last. Still haven't booted it up.
That serves me right.
Well, I guess the 3D effect is the winner here, unless the Switch version comes with a lot of enhancements that is.
I know they mention Outrun and Top Gear, but I get Rad Racer vibes too. I... Vaguely remember this was released on 3DS but I don't know why I did get it. Guess I'll read the review and see which system I'd get this for.
Going right onto the wishlist. Bought the 3DS version on sale last week and love it. Will be great seeing this one on a bigger TV screen.
@Ralek85 3D was totally underused and looked fabulous on some games, I remember resistance 3 in 3D and also Just Cause that had a 3D mode/mod, the added immersion was great fun. I'd always hope the 3DS would evolve into something that could run more complex games to really wow people, new 3DS wasn't quite it.
I would definitely be down for a premium Switch with a lovely 3D screen and slightly more grunt to make Breath of the Wild, Astral chain , Fast X et Al pop out of the screen.
Alas I can only dream.
As for 80s it was okay. Pricing will be key for people to notice it on Switch as it already has a couple of similar games.
I’ve got this on 3DS. The lack of analogue controls makes it very difficult to enjoy.
@FargusPelagius I remember Resistance 3! The PS3 actually had some really good stereoscopic 3D games. I particularly enjoyed StarDust and Wipeout, the latter of which incidentially also being brilliant VR game these days. I still keep my old Panasonic VT30-series Plasma in the other room, as it's sometimes just a blast to go back to these games. Plus, Lion King 3D looks absolutely stunning on it.
I actually kinda regret not picking up one of the early LG 4K OLEDs to that end. A buddy of mine has one, and 3D is real treat on it! But I'm also happy with my new model, both have their ups and downs, I'm okay with at least one 3D TV in the house. Plus, you can also watch 3D content on PS4+PSVR, if you are alone that is.
I agree, that the New 3DS XL was only a small step forward, but I still kinda adore it because I can really finally enjoy games like Kid Icarus in 3D (which also looks amazing imho). It was pointless to use the feature on my old 3DS XL, as I was always slipping out of that tiny sweetspot ...
Yeah, really too bad Sony and Nintendo abandoned that feature alltogether.
That one is totally up my alley. Looks beautiful. Hope it runs smooth on Switch and let's wait for the price
I wished we get news like AAA game something releases on Switch next week, instead of news about all these small indie games imitating games from over 20 years ago.
As many already said, the 3DS version is great. Really worth it if you have it around still. The game is usually on sale everytime I hop on the 3DS eshop
I’m interested in what was improved/added in this Switch version. The 3DS version was phenomenal; music, graphics, controls, etc. I am seeing some emoji symbols above the cars which wasn’t present on 3DS, but without some improvements I’m afraid I won’t be double dipping. I can just play my 3DS version. For those who have NOT played this however, seriously consider buying this; it’s honestly one of the better racers of this style I’ve played.
@Giygas_95 I've got the 3DS version. Without playing the Switch version, it's hard to say, but I'd probably recommend getting it on the 3DS. The 3D effect looks amazing. Also, the screenshots here look pretty much identical to the 3DS, so I'm guessing there isn't much if anything in the way of improvements (except the trees look a little more detailed). Expanding the view onto a bigger screen might actually make the graphics look worse. I guess the question is, do you still regularly use your 3DS? If you've retired it and you'd only be pulling it out for this game, you may want to just get it on the Switch. But if you're like me and still frequently use your little handheld, I'd say go that route.
Outrun 2 looks awesome! This looks fun. Add this to Outrun and Chase Horizon Turbo..
@TheFox I still use it fairly frequently. So maybe I will get it on there!
There's great brand new 2020 released games in 3ds eShop that just sit there begging to be discovered. "Silver Falls: 3 down stars" is one of them. It's an indie made silenthill/resident evil type game
over shoulder view n laser sight ala resident evil 4, this game IS GOOD, but got ignored/trashed due to an accidental release of a broken version of the game, these versions were reviewed and horribly trashed. "silver falls: 3 down stars" has since been fixed and has even more new updates/content waiting to be released by nintendo right now. Check out YouTube video of "silver falls: 3 down stars" make sure it's version 1.2 gameplay video and take a look for yourselves at this truly impressive one man studio indie achievement. Nintendoo WILL NOT advertise them whatsoever unless it has something to do with Switch as well.
It doesn’t matter how many music tracks it has, none will match those of Outrun
Nice another retro arcade racer to add to the collection! Hopefully will be as good as Outrun and Horizon Chase Turbo!
I'll just stick with Horizon Chase Turbo on my Switch. I already got this game on 3DS and it's not bad but I prefer Outrun.
@JayJ I was just playing HCT and have to agree. Too similar to warrant buying this. I might have bitten on 3DS, but I honestly haven't played on my 3DS in over a year.
Out Run is a great game, a classic, running against time and avoiding civil traffic is what has drawn my attention to these racing games; and if you add games like Top gear and Highway Star where you have rivals in the race ...
So with this game, it's already on my wish list! ^. ^
Gimme gimme gimme, absolute day one purchase. i thought this was never going to release.
@JasmineDragon Yeah after I got a Switch Lite I realized how much I prefer that over the 3DS, and I have hardly used the 3DS since. I wasn't really a fan of the 3DS era anyways, the 3D effect was kind of a gimmick and the dual screen concept was never my thing.
@Giygas_95 Well, that depends on how sensitive you are to "jaggies" on a big screen. Like I said, the 3DS low-res screen makes the edges softer, and adds the 3D effect, which really does add to the game, but if you want to get some idea of what to expect, just use the YouTube app on the Switch in docked mode, and watch a gameplay clip of this game.
That should give you some idea of what to expect. On the other hand:
I myself might double dip. There was a sale on 3DS, I don't know if that's still the case, but if so, you should probably make use of it, if you're more than just a little interested in this game.
@ThanosReXXX No sale on 3DS currently, but it's just $9.99 normally so if I do decide to pick it up, it certainly won't break the bank.
@Giygas_95 Ah, I guess the sale is over, then. But you're right, still won't break the bank, and even at that price, it's definitely worth it, for fans of this type of retro arcade racers.
I liked the game on the 3DS but couldn't manage to beat the last few races... even with my car fully maxed out the other racers' cars were still way faster than mine!
THink I'd rather play Horizon Chase Turbo, but this is half the price and has a DeLorean, so it's a sale for me. Can never really have too many Top Gear/Out Run games.
Add a 4-player split screen mode and I'm a buyer. Otherwise I'll stick to the 3DS version, which looks great in in 3D!
@Jhomesjones I played the demo of Silver falls and it just seemed broken and aimless, put me off it. Graphics were alright and I really wish more Devs had actually used the 3DS properly but not my cup of tea.
@Ralek85 agreed on Kid Icarus, Sora poured magic pixie dust into that game, it looks incredible at times and runs at a fantastic pace. Kid Icarus on Switch would be a day one from me. Expand on the multiplayer with more maps too and it would be a huge hit with any gamer.
In fact if there was a launch title made for a 3D Switch model, Kid Icarus would be heaven.
@Giygas_95 I can't see the price being to much. You could probably double dip on it. If nothing else buy online and get it on sale on the other a couple months later.
Great game on 3DS...I could see double dipping on a sale.
Still haven't played the 3DS version which is sitting in my backlog. Must have a go sometime. Glad to hear from the comments the 3DS is done well.
Really enjoyed this on the 3DS, looked great and was a lot of of fun. Probably grab it on Switch as my hands have been beaten by arthritis, so 3DS isn't an option any longer.
@FargusPelagius
Oh. I should've mentioned the demo is from the 1.0 version back when game was indeed completely broken. The YouTube video that shows 1.2 gameplay is closest thing around to an "accurate" demo.
@FargusPelagius nintendo never let Silver Falls upgrade the demo, so it's as broken as the original launch version was. In Europe there's even a 1.3 version that adds 40 hours into the " frontier fighters" mode content. Nintendo of America will be releasing that update soon but viral tradgedy is delaying it. The demo is just another hurdle that "silver falls: 3 down stars" must overcome to change it's reputation. 1.2 is currently what's available in Nintendo of America jurisdiction and I promise it's nothing like the demo.
@Jhomesjones well I am in the U.K so should be able to get the latest version. I shall check out a few vids on YouTube. Cheers for the info. Damn shame they cannot update that demo, as it put me right off. I expect anyone on the fence would try it and feel the same.
